got this because of the price, the reviews, and usual sony quality? but as a complete novice to the use of camcorders, i have found it easy to use, and watch back, size is great and it has performed very well in different situations. the option to take photos whilst recording is a great function.....very happy!!!!

Very lightweight - I get about 1hr 45 mins battery while recording - hard disk will hold 20 hours recording on medium quality - about 10 hours high quality video - software works with Vista
Why only a 4 ? The vidoe software is pretty pants - the built in stuff with Vista is better but you may want to buy your own package for creating the actual video afterwards.
The "low light" functionality is fantastic though ... if you want to film at night
Bottom line, you can buy this camera with no worries and it will et you create DVD's with menu's but the functionality of the software is pretty limited

I bought this camcorder just before Xmas as i wanted to film the big day and capture everyone's expressions and cherish the memories in years to come. From what everyone else has written about this handycam, it seemed like a good piece of kit, perfect for the amateur.
On recieving it i was ecstatic. It was very small, my hand can actually hide all of it. It looks quite sleek and tech-funky??? I got familarised with it easily but from then on it was dissppointing.
The quality of video is awful, it cant handle light at all. Just goes mental.
The edges are all blurry and it looks downright nasty. When i burned the video i recorded onto a DVD and played it, it just magnified the poor quality. Also, the photo mode is very poor, the quality of stills is bad aswell - i'd rather use my kodak camera.
The image stabilisation doesnt work, once you zoom in your done for. It emphasises the shakiness of your hands so much, its unbelievable.
The bundled software is appaling, so i ended up using roxio easy media creator 10.
I wnated this to be good, i hoped it would be a good value for money camcorder which had great quality and would capture the big day properly. But, i returned it 2 days after buying and am looking for a last minute buy. The levels above this, such as the dcr-190 are about £100 more expensive but the quality seems much better.
IM GOING INTO A SHOP AND TESTING THIS BEFORE I BUY IT. its not the same as just looking at a few pics and reading reviews, you need a hands on approach

Just got the camera 2 weeks back. Firstly, Amazon are fantastic.Ordered for the next day delivery on Fri late noon and it was home on Sat at 10am. Worth the 5 extra pounds as it reduces apprehension.
On to the camera, opened the box, charged the battery for couple of hours and we were ready to go. Good features, well laid out menu though can be a little flimsy for guys with big fingers or for ladies with long nails but very manageable. Easy to record, transfer files, plug in to the TV, hardly find anything complicated on this piece of beauty.
If I have to crib, then all I can complain about is the battery life, can record only about 100mins at a stretch and I have to charge it up again. For home recording and small parties its fine but if you are planning to use this while you travel, then you have to purchase an alternative battery, there is no other go. No point touring 10 hours in a day and recording just 100 mins of film!!! Also the cam goes out of focus quite frequently while zooming in and out but it is nothing big I can complain about.
In case anyone knows of alternative battery options to the NP-FH30, do let me know. Need to buy one fast. Sony charges
All in all, fantabulous handy cam to own. 30GB is more than enough and lastly even the night mode recording is good. Can actually record a Blair Witch Movie :-)

Just purchased my second camcorder from sony and this time is easier to use then my old one which was the DCR-TRV22E.Found this one simplier to use and dont have to carry so many spare parts around e.g flash.spare battery - once fully charged is fine and it fits into a ladies bag without being to bulky! The zoom on camcorder is brill and so easy to transfer videos onto the disc--i couldnt get over how small and compact it is and i also thought that the station to charge it and download pic's would have been bigger than it actually was but that is also small and compact.There arent to many buttons to fiddle with like on the other recorder so this also makes it easier to work.after all.you want a pic there and then not ten mins later when you've found out where all the buttons are!!

Bought this with no real expectations, but for money I cant fault it. Starts up in a matter of seconds, one touch recording, one button to take a reasonable 5 megapixel photo, all recorded and stored on an SD card.
If you are looking for a camcorder/camera that you can take anywhere and not having to worry about it too much in comparison to an expensive alternative this does the job very well. Plays back on my TV in good quality (720*480) and also plays with no trouble though my Windows Media Player.
Takes AA batteries which is a blessing in disguise as i am getting fed up with all the chargers i have around the house. I can pick up batteries anywhere on my travels, but i do try and use my rechargable batteries.
Thinking of buying another for my god son as it would make a great gift for Christmas, as he can then capture all those moments you normally miss!!

Easy to use, records straight onto an SD card which then plays back in reasonable quality on my TV and my Windows Media Player.
Takes both still pictures and video with ease. I probably use this more than my main camcorder as I do alot of You Tube clips and post them online. This is perfect the that!!

I was very impressed with the delivery from Amazon having ordered this item; it arrived the following day! This is the first time i have purchased an 'electrical' item from Amazon, so i'm well impressed. I bought the Sony DCR-HC37 Handycam to replace an old analogue samsung 8mm camcorder that finally died on me after owning it for 8 years. I'm one of these people who hate going through the instructions first (impatience i know) but found that the handycam HC37 was so easy to use, i didn't need to view the instructions first. Basically, get the camcorder home or have it delivered next day by Amazon and charge the battery (all necessary units included in the box, except DV tapes). I also purchased the DV tapes so i was all ready to go as soon as the thing charged, this took about 45 minutes if my memory serves me right. switch on, open the viewfinder, press EASY button and press REC to start filming. I took the camcorder off to the park with the dog in tow and filmed around five minutes. Got home stuck the cables into the tv (audio, video jack etc) and into the camcorder and hey presto, there was my filming on the TV!!!! I'm writing the review before i've tested it loading onto the computer so i can't give 100% review.
If you basically want a very easy to use 'point and shoot' camcorder, then this is the one for you, particularly if you hate all the added features that can sometimes come with a camcorder and you never use!!!!
Go ahead and buy one, I don't think you'll be disappointed and at this price it's a great one to buy dad for Father's day; if like my dad, gadgets are all too much. This one will be a sinch!

Had to put up a five star review for this to defend it as some of the other comments here are not really fair. For the average buyer this is an excellent product for the price. Compact, well made, excellent video quality and it's a Sony. Remember the budget price - that's why you don't get any tapes or USB cable included - but they are very cheap here on Amazon. I record via the provided video cables onto my DVD recorder if I want to make back-ups or edit. I bought this after borrowing a friend's earlier model. This has a better zoom but no remote or stills capture. The battery will give you enough power to fill a tape - ideal. Highly recommended!

Got this camera for xmas , camera its self is great , fast charging times , touch screen use is really good and its a good little cam all around. The only bad points i have to make are the fact it DOES NOT come with USB , Firewire or any DV tapes.
If you want to tranfer video from the camera to your PC you will need the firewire I.link cable (there on ebay for £2 inc. delivery) , you will not be able to transfer video with the USB only images.

I read the reviews and believed this to be possibly the best budget camcorder on the market today. All the reviews were encouraging except for the very important issue of the battery life and cost. Never mind, I had a pressing need to have a camcorder by 14th December so I put my order in on the morning of 10th December. The camera was ultimately despatched to me on 12th December with an estimated delivery date of the 14th - seems to be cutting it a bit fine, but let's live life dangerously. On tracking my Order I found the camera had arrived at a delivery depot at 01.45hrs of 14.12.07. Great I'll get my hands on it in time. But alas, on contacting the delivery company I was told that the camera had arrived too late for it to be delivered that day. Never mind, I thought its only a couple miles down the road may I could just come down and collect it from the Depot. Nice try, but no can do! It might be delivered on Saturday however it was not possible to say whether this was an a.m. or p.m. delivery. Fast-forward to this morning; at 08.55hrs the parcel was put on a van to be delivered to me it was finally delivered at 14.23hrs. Amazon need to be taught a lesson about delivery estimates and customer's expectations. The camera will be returned to them post haste and I'll take my business elsewhere.
Beware of the battery cost........2007-11-26
The camera as bought comes with an NP-FH30 battery which is only 530mAh capacity . This battery is not available to purchase as an accessory since it will only last for about two thirds of a tape if you like to use the zoom lens . The available batteries are the NP-FH50 (900mAh) , NP-FH70 (1800mAh) and the NP-FH100 (3980mAh). These batteries are ridiculously expensive as Sony have had to use special circuitry to prevent non-Sony batteries being used . Sony have just recently made their AC adaptors and batteries even more sophisticated so the camcorder will not charge non-Sony batteries and even worse since these non-Sony batteries use a cord to plug into the AC adaptor socket, the batteries will not even operate the latest Sony camcorders . If you are lucky enough to have the slightly older version of this camera, it will work OK with non-Sony batteries . I do not know the date of the AC adaptor modifications , so please be careful when making a Sony Camcorder purchase . This now means that you are forced to buy a Sony battery at a cost of between half the cost of the camera and about three-quarters the cost of the camera . I find this incredible that a company like Sony can prevent freedom of choice in simple things like batteries . I suspect that the camera is a loss-leader and that the company make the real profit on the batteries . I realise that this camera is a great item , but if we had realised that we couldn't use a cheaper battery , we would not have bought Sony . I for one will never again buy a battery-powered Sony item unless the batteries are readily available to me at a sensible price .
If only we had gone for a camcorder that used the rechargeable AA batteries ....... still you have now been forewarned and can make your own decision on this camcorder model plus all the other Sony models.

What a great piece of kit.......2007-12-13
My old camcorder stopped working and I wanted to replace it with one that was easier to transfer to PC. Hard disc camcorders were too expensive so I did a bit of research and came up with the Sanyo. What a great buy. For family memories, movies and pictures it does a great job. OK so the pictures taken inside are not that great since the flash does not work that well and there can be a bit of shake on movies when zoomed in. Having said this its size price and ease of use are fantastic. Unless you are a budding Stephen Spielberg get one.

I bought the sanyo Xacti for filming my blog at my workshop,and didnt want have too precious about it getting dusty or damaged so for the money i thought id take a chance,and have been very impressed with its many functions and the way an single image can be taken from the video footage,for really good quality filming i would be prepared to spend a bit more money but for a camera you can just carry around in your pocket and use it a not so friendly camera invironment like a workshop i think its a very good buy.

I work with Computers a lot so I may be biased, BUT the Digital Movie Camera I received shocked me with its pure lack of image quality. Dont get me wrong I wasnt expecting HD or anything, but I was expecting a picture I could at least make out an a 32" Samsung TFT TV without squinting. I found myself apologising for the quality to those in the room as I was shocked, and thoroughly disappointed. As long as you intend to watch them as small pictures on a PC dont bother at all, I may have had a bad one but I am asking for a refund. As an aside, my camera had a persistent white "blob" on the TFT screen, which also made its way onto the recorded video images. To be honest the annoying white blob was the most in focus thing on the screen. I am not a beginner and know a fair bit about photography etc, I checked every website and every manual to see if I had done anything wrong, unfortunately I hadn't and the picture only got worse as I reduced the quality. Not a happy purchaser, poor product and faulty. Would only look clear if you had Cataracts, I fear. Was purchased from Pixmania, through the Amazon website.

Got one of these for a relative who isn't good with modern technology. The key features I was looking for were ease of use, robustness, reasonable image quality and simplicity when transfering movies from SD card to other media.
This scores very highly on all these counts. Maybe you could fault it for being a bit too small to hold at times but then you can carry it anywhere in a convenient pocket. It also starts-up very fast!
As my relative doesn't use a computer the fact that they can copy movies straight onto an old fashioned video recorder is a big plus (for those more able, it has all those features you'd expect for copying to PC and making DVDs).
Downsides? There isn't an SD card included in the box (although they're cheap enough to buy). Buttons are quite stiff to press and hamper both still and video camera operation and where's the lens cap?
I think it's great value though and if 640x480 video quality is good enough for you then this does it all very well.

got one & used it for 2 weeks holidaying in vegas,day & night time filming was a breeze.photos are poor quality but as a camcorder , great.sound quality is ok but crap on play back via the unit,but thro the tv when back home is great.the drivers for it have poor menue for use on pc so i used another one for it,shame, but thats it, the rest is good news. so well done sanyo.you can have 9 out of ten off me.

Ordered this on 27/12, as item was in stock.
Just been on to check my account and told that the expected delivery date is between 24/01 and 14/02!! I'm not waiting a month for this camera.
Have cancelled my order, and brought it cheaper from Pixmania (£189), which will be with me in 2-4 days.
Amazon.co.uk use to be a great site - now it's full of misrepresentations and 3rd party sellers with over inflated postage costs. I ordered 10 blank DVDRW's - £9.48 with postage being £9.80! It's a joke.
Best camcoder ever.......2007-12-25
I had a tape camcoder; I think it was panasonic until it broke a few months ago and since then a camcoder has been on my wish list. I bought the previous camera two years and it cost me the same price as this one now.
This camcoder is probably the most you get for your money out of all the cameras out there.
The video quality is excellent and you can film in widescrean and surround sound. There are many modes that you can use like sports mode, potrait mode, macro mode (which is excellent) and, my favourite, night mode. This is like the effect they use on the Blair Witch Project and Most Haunted. It is an effect where you can film in pitch black with an infared light and it will pick up the areas you are pointing at without you being able to see it with your own eyes. It's great.
It is simple to use apart from I had a bit of trouble with figuring out how to get my CDs converted to be able to use on the computer and on my editing software (Magix). But once I got it it is quite simple although it is quite a bit of hassle just to be able to get one small piece of film on there.

At the moment I am considering the purchase of this camera. Naturally I have attempted to gather as much information as possible. I have given 5 stars because I do not wish my comments to degrade the overall average and as I already own several Sony products I am sure that the quality will be first class. However, I was disturbed to find that the manufacturer's description on the page for this product referred in fact to the DCR-DVD406E model which is considerably more expensive. This is to say the least misleading and initially it certainly led me to believe that the specification was much greater than it in fact is. I hope that this oversight will be corrected at the earliest opportunity as my dealings with Amazon have always been of the highest order and I am sure that the company would wish to clarify what appears to be an inadvertent ambiguity.

Ordred my camcorder from amazon and saved over £100 compared to tesco direct and received it next day. 5 stars for amazon. I've found this camcorder excellent in all areas. Picture quality, sound, zoom and ease of use is brilliant. Nightshot plus is amazing and films in the pitch-black. The best thing about this handycam is the low budget price you pay for the specifications on this nifty number. Those are the plus points and now for the negative ones. Sony need to get their act together. The manual is all over the place. An example is "getting started" is on page 19? and sums up how badly it has been composed. I agree with other reviews that a disc should have been included in the package for start and go. The biggest problem with this camcorder is extras. If you don't buy a more powerful Sony battery pack but another make, the power doesn't go through the battery connection but through the DC in jack, via a cable connected to the battery. Appartently Sony will not allow other makes to power up this cam through the battery housing. One other thing to mention. You will need a Memory Stick to take pictures, but be careful when ordering one. The manual states that data that uses "Magic Gate" technology cannot be recorded or played on your camcorder. I would highly recommend this handycam to anyone but the extras are going to be expensive if you buy Sony.

I got this item from another store but wanted to leave my review here. This is an excellent camcorder and the picture quality is excellent for what you are paying for. i use TDK dvd-rw discs which work fine and i get no pop up telling me its not a sony disc. the Zoom is fantastic and i find it so simple to use that you have to be a monkey if you find it difficult(no offense to other reviewers....LOL.
I have ordered a compatible NP-fh100 battery off ebay for £12 inc P+P. compared to the samsung camcorder i previously had (from amazon) this is much better. Love the superplus night shot...really spooky and works surprisingly well.
you should not be disappointed if you buy this camcorder. if you have more money to spend then get the 1 mega pixel one if not then this is a winner.
knocked off a star for the naff battery they include and the lack of any discs and case..come on sony how much money do you make each year!! LOL

I have this camera for about 6 months and is excellent.
This is my first camcorder but i love it.
Takes excellent video quality, easy to use, and quite small to always carry with you.
The optical zoom is fantastic, and the picture quality with up to 20x digital zoom is very good as well.
Nice and vibrant colours, no pixels whatsoever with optical zoom (mind you though need to use the right setting for the right moment).
The only negative is the absence of flashlight and the battery wont last for more than 45mins, hence the 4 stars.
I love this liitle gem though and very happy with it.

Panasonic NV-GS60 Camcorder.......2008-01-17
This is my first review i have ever written, i either dont have the time or cannot be bothered to write reviews but having purchased this camera yesterday i was so anoyed and disgusted by its recording quality that i felt i had to. I feel like i have been robbed and i dont want anyone else to lose their money. unfortunately where i bought it from want accept returns on camcorders so im stuck unless a fault occurs within 30 days.
DO NOT BUY!!!!! Having read the reviews on Amazon and other sites I purchased this camera yesterday and having used it The picture quality is diabolical my samsung phone takes better video. I know its a budget camcorder so i wasnt expecting proffesinal results but i would never have guessed it would be this bad.
I was dubious when i saw this camcorder as the lens looked too small compared to other camcorders in the store and this gave a feeling of low quality but i still went ahead due to the positive reviews i had read namely on this site.
I am realy angry how others including the reviewer on this site can give 5/5 for recording quality.
The recording quality is worse than terrible, images are very grainy in indoor use. I cant understand how the other reviewrs have given anything above a 1 star for this cam, it could possibly be that for this cam to give any accepable image it needs a lot of light, there is no way indoor lights will be sufficient.
When it comes to the night mode it gets even worse. The image is hardy visible and frame rate fluctuates between 1 to 5 fps. Why has panasonic even included this I cant guess.
If you are considering buying this cam go and test it first otherwise you may as well throw your money away.
For image quality i wouldnt even give this camcorder 1/5 but there is nothing lower.
BOTTOM LINE USE YOUR PHONE TO RECORDR VIDEO ANYTHING IS BETTER!!!

I bought this having spent a few weeks reading reviews and product info etc, however, there are some details that aren't mentioned in most reviews, at least not the one I was interested in.
I had been using a friend's Mini DV camcorder and opted to buy the same format, as according to most reliable sources, this allowed the highest quality of post edited video.
This is of extremely high importance to Me because I want to be able to chop up my footage on my PC when I get home from surfing and make something watchable. Unfortunately, even though this camera does have a USB connection, it does not allow you to transfer footage from your tapes to your PC - gutted :[
It does operate as a webcam and it does have a DV (4 pin) out which you could use to connect to any machine that has either DV or Firewire ports- most likely a MAC (ace machines, can't believe I sold mine) but you really must check your machine at home if you want to avoid similar frustration and disappointment.
I'm sending mine back and getting an HDD camcorder, which may lose some smoothness of frame rate, but at least my footage won't be stuck on thousands of little tapes.
Has to be said though, from my limited time with the camera, it felt good, worked really well, adapted to changes in light conditions and auto focused really quickly. Would have been an awesome camera.
Panasonic NV-GS60EB Great budget camcorder.......2007-08-19
When buying this Camcorder I looked at the JVC GR-D728EK and the Sony DCR-HC27E.
I discarded the JVC as it had very poor white balance, meaning the colures it produced were not faithful to the image being shot, the tape noise was picked up by the microphone in such a way that it was very distracting when watching the recorded video, and in-doors/low light the images lost their colure definition and became very grainy with the auto focus not working particularly effectively.
When I handled the Sony and the Panasonic in store they both appeared NOT to suffer from the above foibles of the JVC. I purchased the Panasonic so I cannot comment further than on the Sony but can comment as follows on the Panasonic.
The lens on the Panasonic is a 30 X Optical zoom (which is very good for camcorder standards) with an electronic image stabilising function which does contribute to reducing camera shake but will not, understandably, eradicate it. There is a however a fitting on the base of the camera to allow you to mount it on a tripod should you wish to.
The main differentiator with the focal length on this camera in relation to the JVC & Sony above is that it has a very wide angle lens meaning that more will fit in to the shot, ideal for filming indoors where it may be hard to move far enough away from the subject matter to fit it all in or when filming scenery where you want to fit in a wider vista.
In low light the images are still very good, the auto focus is still effective and the white balance is faithful. The camera comes equipped with a low light function (activated manually) to take filming down to 2 LUX (as much light generated by 2 candles at 1 meter) giving the ability to film in near darkness.
Whilst there is a photo feature for taking stills, this simply records seven seconds of still footage on to the tape as opposed recording to a jpeg image on to a SD card, or such like, as would be done on a stills camera.
The camera has a full auto setting and also manual over rides to cover focus, exposure compensation, and pre-programmed scene (sport, snow, beach, portrait etc), white balance, backlight compensation, plus others.
I found the camera a little larger than the Sony & JVC (still very small), which for me made it more comfortable to handle, with not too many buttons and all in the right place. The Panasonic felt well made with a colour viewfinder (with dioptre) and a 2.5-inch LCD flip out screen (will swivel through 180 degrees for filming yourself etc) both are of perfectly good quality and deliver clear images.
A sturdy/stubby joystick on the rear of the camera handles navigation for the menu & play functions. I actually found this very effective in use.
You can out put the audiovisual signal by way of a DV Out (No In), Mini USB and composite jack plug (Video, Audio left & right) but there is no S-Video. There are also no DV or USB leads supplied with the camera only Jack Plug. There is also no editing software supplied for your PC.

I have thoroughly enjoyed using this camera. It has excellent image quality and low light handling for a budget camcorder. It starts up quickly and is simple to operate as well as reproducing images faithfully. For the money I would be happy to give this product 5 stars.

Excellent little camcorder. Picture quality is superb directly to the television via the AV cable, it is easy to use and is small and light. Great value for money.
Just a shame it doesn't come with any editing software or cable to connect to the computer.
