First impressions of this cable are pretty good - it has a smart, high quality finish to it (a minor consideration, maybe, given that it'll probably be out of sight behind the TV) and appears stronger than cheaper cables, due to it being both quite thick and covered in a toughened braided PVC jacket. It looks like it could withstand a large amount of rough treatment and certainly anything that the ordinary user is likely to throw at it.

Its strength unfortunately also acts against it, as it's somewhat less flexible than I would have liked; it doesn't bend as well as some other (maybe lower quality) cables and because of this it sticks out around 17 cm from the back of the TV. Whilst this won't be a problem for people with sets that have downward-facing HDMI inputs, others may well take issue with this as their TVs would have to be placed away from the wall to compensate. The inflexibility also means that some of the cable's length is taken up in the bends; Belkin appear to have acknowledged the problem by making the cable a slightly unusual length (2.4m rather than 2m) and I think this version would be more than long enough for most users.

I can't compare either the picture or the sound quality with any other HDMI cables as I don't have any, though I have compared it with a fairly decent IXOS SCART cable I bought not long ago, running between a Philips TV and a PS3 for hi-def gaming and up-scaling standard DVDs. The difference between hi and standard definition feeds was obvious from the moment I hooked everything up, the hi-def picture being much sharper and more distinct. Colours are vibrant, blacks are solid and there's no sign of ghosting, although this may be as much to do with the TV as the cable itself. There's also no obvious cross-talk from exterior sources, which seems to show that the shielding used is more than adequate, whilst the connectors feel stable in the inputs and don't seem like they would fall out unless pulled deliberately. I would add that I haven't noticed much difference in sound quality compared with SCART, although better tuned ears than mine may well think differently; I guess in the end it depends on the overall quality of your system as much as anything else.

Admittedly this cable isn't as cheap as some you can buy but in this instance I think you get what you pay for - it not only delivers a great picture but feels like it'll last a lifetime. Whether or not it works any better than cheaper cables is, I guess, dependent on what you choose to compare it with, but you only have to look at the quality of construction to see where the extra money went. It's only real downside is its rigidity but that's a necessary evil given its tough construction and I won't mark it down for it, my only advice would be to make sure you allow for this when considering what length you need.
