Canon EF - Telephoto zoom lens - 70 mm - 300 mm - f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM - Canon EF

Product Description

Canon raises the stakes for professional photography with its EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM telephoto lens with image stabilization. Thanks to a new triple-layered diffractive optical element (DO) this 70-300mm lens is less than 4 inches (10 cm) long. It can focus down to 4.6 feet (without rotating the front element) and a new zoom lock button keeps the lens safe and secure when not in use or used at the wide angle. A virtually silent ultra-sonic motor (USM) gives the lens extremely fast autofocus. The lens also includes Canons Image Stabilization technology to dramatically reduce camera shake compensating for approximately three stops in shutter speed without any perceptible increase in image blur. Its a great choice for professional photojournalists and serious advanced amateurs who need to contain the size and weight of equipment carried.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding lens - almost miraculous, in fact!.......2007-11-10

Serious pofessional photographers probably won't look twice - and yes, if you can afford to stick an f2.8 400mm lens on a massive tripod you will get better results at the end of the (very long and sweaty) day. For the rest of us... This is simply the most useful long lens I have owned in 35 years of photography. Before buying it for an African safari this summer I was sligthtly concerned by some reviews suggesting 'softness'. In practice, it was fantastic - the combination of rapid AF and advanced IS allowing me to take regular shots confidently, and some under conditions in which I would previously have just given up. One dull morning we found a family of cheetahs under a tree. I had to take shots at 300mm hand-held at 1/50th; most were usable, and several are printable at A3 with no sign of shake - magic! You can carry it around all day without feeling the weight, it stows easily inside an ordinary slingshot case, and doesn't draw attention to its capabilities.
It IS pricey - but justifiably so, and my only tiny quibble is that the zoom-lock (to stop it zooming under gravity, if held downwards) only locks at the 70mm position.

5 out of 5 stars A little knowledge is a dangerous thing!.......2007-05-16

This is a highly sophisticated precision piece of equipment, but in the hands of those not fully qualified it may yield results short of the magnificent norm obtained by this lens. I have used this lens (in conjunction with Canon EOS 5D and EOS 1DS Mk2 cameras) since it first appeared on the market and as a full time national photographer, I can only say the results are outstanding, equalling the quality achieved by all my other 'L' series lenses, but with much less bulk, for those travel occasions that crop up. One must be aware of such things as limitations of 'image stabilizing' abilities and of the two IS modes this lens has, also you must be aware of 'optimum aperture' criteria and shutter speed requirements. Also, for 'pin sharp' results, it is always advisable as a professional, to do away with 'IS' and to resort to the use of a suitable tripod. Here endeth the lesson!

5 out of 5 stars Love this lens.......2007-01-05

I love this lens and have used it for everything from landscape to macros. It's portability means it can be used all day long and the IS allows for versatility in low light conditions. If I had only one lens this would be it.

The lens is well built and rugged enough for a non L-series. The hood can be reversed to cover and protect the lens and the lens can still be used. This was handy when I inadvertently dropped it one metre onto concrete and suffered only a few scratches on the lens hood.

Most importantly this lens is going to get used, a lot !

3 out of 5 stars Some good points but overall disappointing.......2006-12-03

I bought this lens almost two years ago when it was released and was very excited by the prospect of having such a magnification range, with image stabilisation in a far smaller package than the alternative, serious, Canon lenses on offer.

I have not used this lens in almost one year due to the fact that it is not a sharp lens. I think that it works well and the DO approach is certainly a nice marketing ploy but the end result is what counts and personally I feel that this lens does not deliver the results.

Given the price tag involved, I would suggest going a bit further and investing in the EF 70-200 2.8L IS USM and just accept that if you want quality results, you need to be prepared to carry a slightly heavier unit.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very very good alround lens.......2007-06-18

I have been using this lens for some time now with my EOS 300D and have been really happy with the results, I have used it in all types of lighting conditions, indoors and out and as long as you take these into account this lens will perform really well. I have even taken macro shots, which have been fantastic!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent performance for the money........2007-06-07

This and a Tokina 12-24mm ultra wide angle lens are my travelling companions everywhere I go. The Tokina is wonderful for landscape/seascape shots, the Canon 70-300mm for getting in nice and close for sharp detail. I've also used it very successfully for portraiture (allows you distance, so no need to crowd your model) and for fine art photography subjects. It's an absolute boon for travelling, being fairly light, and the image quality is consistently high every time. Thanks to the Image Stabilisation, hand-held shots, even at the full telephoto 300mm range of things, are plenty sharp enough and despite its relatively small aperture, the IS ensures the lens performs well in fairly dingy light too - providing you know how to set your camera up right. Okay, so the build isn't L class, but then you're not paying L Class money either. For a very useful and extensive zoom range, image quality, and convenience, this lens is invaluable and excellent value for money.

3 out of 5 stars Work with the limitations.......2007-01-13

OK, first impressions. I've not had the lens long.

Bearing in mind that in buying an item like this you're buying it for the '300' bit rather than the '70' bit you need really took how it performs at maximum extension. Without doubt it performs best either on a monopod or on a tripod in which instances the results are very good. Getting a sharp image at 300, even with IS, when handholding is a bit hit and miss. The glass is by no means anywhere near the performance of the 'L' range and much prefers stronger sunlight. It does not perform well in lower light conditions. Overall, for the price, I'm a little disappointed and will upgrade to 'L' when my funds permit. In the meantime I'll work with the limitations to try and get the best out of it.
