Cheap and cheerful.......2008-01-15

This product can be used to take a standard IDE or SATA 3.5" internal hard drive (as found in almost all desktop PCs) and turn it into an external USB drive. It's a simple metal enclosure that screws open to reveal connections for the hard drive and screws to hold it in place. It's a very basic piece of kit. Even with 1st class shipping, it was only £20. It's cheap and it shows. The build quality is hardly inspiring and a couple of panels seem prone to rattling. The cables and connectors make it tricky (but not impossible) to get the hard drive attached and screwed into place. I had to unscrew the circuit board to get the SATA attachments to the hard drive and remove the unused IDE cable to get the enclosure to shut properly - and even then it required a little coaxing to get the cable to lie properly.

Once up and running, it works just fine. Computer (Mac, in this case) recognised it immediately and bish bosh, the cheapest 750Gb of space you could wish for. Just compare to buying a ready-made solution in terms of price. It comes with a proper on/off switch on the unit, which means no faffing to eject and turn off when not wanted. It has a green light for power, which turns red when the drive is being accessed. So, it ticks both function boxes that I consider bare essentials.

In short, not a great design, a bit more tricky to set up than it really should be, but cheap and once up and running, does the job well.

A Cheap Solution.......2007-10-21

I looked around for a cheap option to use my spare SATA drive as storage and this was the best I could find at a decent price.
Basically it does what it is supposed to do. The cable setup inside the enclosure could be better, and a few pence spent on a stand would have been nice. All the internal and external cables are supplied
It takes 5 mins to open the case, install the drive, reassemble and connect to the PC, you now have more storage.
If the cable management inside was better I would have given this a 5 despite the faulty USB cable and the two pin plug.

I was a little sceptical about buying this product, as it seemed a little bit cheap and cheerful. However, the seller (EW Link) were good, and the item arrived within 2 days, and was well packaged.

Using the item is child's play. Simply plug in the supplied power supply to your old hard drive that you want to connect. Then plug the supplied ATA connector into the hard drive, and plug the other end into your USB port. Within seconds Windows XP recognised the drive. I was able to copy off the files I wanted and then start formatting the drive within about 2 minutes (no more than) of unpacking the goods.

Nice bit of kit, and the seller proved to be very good.

Ifyou've got an old hard drive buy this........2007-11-25

I recently had to buy a new computer and soon aftre doing so I discovered this product. I now have the old 60gb internal drive attached to a USB port on my new computer, and it works a treat. I have extracted all the old data that I wanted to keep and reformatted the old drive, giving me the full 60gb extra space.

The adaptor has it's own power supply and a plug to go into the power socket on the IDE driver.There is a cable with an IDE connector one end and a USB connector the other, just plug it all in and off you go !!

it does the job but...............2008-01-07

OK, this is a really cheap piece of kit and it did the job I bought it for so I have no gripes on that front, however I have one or two observations to make.
1. the housing itself is very robust but the screws to secure the fascia giving access to the inside were poor quality turning to mash straight away so it is now a `push fit' operation to close the unit.
2. first time out I could just about get the fascia off to get access to the inside of the unit without breaking it - I suspect that if you go as far as fully inserting a hard disk, it will be for keeps; unless you push the whole lot out from the other end which will probably damage the unit.
To finish, if you are going to install a drive and leave it alone, this is the right piece of kit at a very keen price, if like me you want to use the kit for data recovery etc. involving regularly installing and removing disks - keep looking!

Chunky box, big fan, quiet running.......2008-01-08

This enclosure is quite large compared to most others, so make sure you have the room for it - the extra size is taken up by the large fan, which is very quiet when running (I can't hear it over my PC's fan).

Stylish, Sturdy and Quiet.......2007-12-24

I bought this because it looks similar to my AV setup. Pleasantly surprised by this enclosure. The drive sits in the unit securely with plenty of room for ventilation. Although there's a massive fan inside it produces very low noise level. It looks, and sounds, quite amazing.
