Great stylish monitor.......2006-09-21
This monitor looks great on your desk and provides a clear sharp image. It's a much cheaper alternative to an apple monitor (works perfectly with OSX) and looks almost as good. The price is fairly good but if you can stomach losing an inch the
acer alernative comes in at nearly half the price and is (almost) as good (though without a speaker).
Probably the best 20" TFT widescreen monitor in its price range.......2006-08-26
A few weeks ago my 17" TFT screen broke, I used a Dell 15" screen for a little while until I finally decided to shed out the cash for this screen. I have to say it was the best decision I have ever made. The screen is truly beautiful, it is a true pleasure to work on.
The 1680x1050 resolution is amazing, everything is crisp clear and you feel as if you have all the space in the world, this compared to a 15" monitor at 1024x768. Believe me there is a huge difference between these resolutions.
The only fault I can find is the speaker on the front, this is really about as good as a laptops speaker, fine for office work, but if you are looking to sing along to your music while surfing the web you will want to buy some speakers.
The price is beyond doubt incredible, try and find another screen of this sort of brand and size and you will find an Apple or a Dell, these are not far off twice as much in price.
All in all this is a brilliant screen and I would recommend anyone looking for a new screen to buy it!
Impeccable.......2006-08-21
I use my PC to watch DVDs and have been stuck with a 17" normal aspect-ratio monitor for ages. I've been waiting for prices to drop, which they have over the last couple of months.
Following excellent reviews on other sites, I decided to purchase this monitor from Amazon as it was the cheapest by a mile. It arrived within 48 hours of ordering (1st class) and I'm deeply impressed! The size of the thing surprised me, even though I knew what to expect, but what amazed me most is the quality.
Not a single dead or hot pixel - not even one - which had been a concern. The colour and contrast are fantastic, and are consistent no matter how acute your viewing-angle. This is a perfect monitor for watching films (I haven't tried the speakers as I have a 5.1 setup, but I didn't buy this monitor for its audio capabilities...). If you use your monitor for films, you'll be amazed what a difference a good quality, decent-sized widescreen monitor makes, as anything in 16:10 or 16:9 ratio pretty-much fills the screen. Also, the monitor is free to swivel on its stand, and it has a reasonable tilt - as well as some height adjustment, which is unusual.
Films aside, you'll be impressed with the working space you gain. Two full-size documents side-by-side? No problem. Working on large spreadsheets? Fantastic. This monitor has an almost identical vertical size/resolution to a normal 17" monitor - it's just a lot wider! Bear in mind that this can make viewing some websites troublesome if you use the full width. I like having my media-player on the side, so actually I kinda like it.
Finally, gaming. Not all games support widescreen format (especially older titles), and some that do require tweaking to get it right. However, decent FPS titles do and, believe me, it's worth it! It's like having peripheral vision, and makes the experience so much more immersive. Definitely worth the investment, as ghosting is also not an issue with this monitor.
A word of warning though: if you want to play recent graphics-intensive titles on this monitor at NATIVE resolution (1680 by 1050 pixels) then you're asking your graphics card to work quite a lot harder. You WILL need a decent modern card - at least 7xxx series or equivalent - if you want to play at decent frame-rates with any decent visual quality.
I can't recommend this monitor enough. I simply can't find anything bad to say about it. I'm sure you'll agree when you buy one...
Philips 200W6CS Widescreen TFT Monitor.......2006-07-08
First of all, WOW! Going from a 17" TFT to a 20" widescreen is an amazing change. I have used it for playing PC games, watching movies and playing XBOX 360 games (via the HD VGA Cable). The quality is excellent - there is no ghosting (although advertised as 16ms, the 16ms panel was replaced by an 8ms, 800:1 panel at the start of 2006 which provides a better quality image). It uses the same panel (LG Philips LM201W01) as the far more expensive Apple 20" Cinema display and the Dell 2005fpw. Also the stand can change its height (although not by a huge degree)
The quality of the picture is great, the blacks and colours in general are far better than my old 17" tft, and the viewing angles are very good as well.
The monitor has 1 dvi socket and 1 vga socket (and includes BOTH cables) as well as a usb port and some inbuilt speakers (both includes cables). The monitor can display an image as widescreen but also allows you to display an image in its true aspect - i.e. whilst most games can run at widescreen resolutions, a few cannot. However with this monitor you can decide whether to stretch the image or to keep the image in its natural, undistorted view and have black bars at each side.
For hints about getting troublesome games to run at a widescreen resolution, go to www.widescreengamingforum.com , as I say most games suypport widescreen already but a few dont but this website has a tons of hints.
All in all, an excellent screen, whether for work (you can display 2 word documents side by side), DVDs or for gaming.
Maybe the best 20" widescreen TFT at its price level.......2006-06-28
This is a well built, good looking 20" widescreen TFT with a high quality pannel - the same that is used in the Dell 2005FPW. I've had chance to try one out in a local retail outlet and am very impressed. My only criticisms are that the native resolution isn't quite high enough to display a full 1080i or 1080p HDTV standards (it's more than adequate for 720p) and that it doesn't have the latest HDMI interface that may be required for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. For me that's not too much of a concern. There's certainly a good chance I'll be getting one myself.
One problem with widescreen TFT monitors, in particular for playing PC games, is that 4:3 and 5:4 resolutions (such as 1024x786 and 1280x1024) are stretched to fit the screen. Until recently most games did not support a widescreen aspect. This isn't a problem for some people but personally I'm not a fan of having everything in game looking rather squashed vertically. Most games either support widescreen or can be modified to do so (try searching 'widescreen gaming forum' for instructions) but there are exceptions, even with relatively recent games. This monitor has two wonderful features that are very useful in games or other content not supporting the pannel's 16:10 aspect ratio: one to one pixel mapping and preserved aspect ratio scaling. This means that the monitor will either show the image in the middle of the screen, pixel for pixel, or will scale up images to fill the screen vertically while preserving the 4:3 or 5:4 aspect ratio. Most other 20" widescreen monitors are incapable of this and I'm not aware of any 19" widescreen monitors that have the function. The monitor does have the option of stretching an image to fill the whole screen like most other montors do as well.
The picture quality is very clear, especially at the native resolution of 1680x1050. Like any TFT, running at a lower resolution will result in a less clear picture. To run newer games at this resolution will require quite an expensive graphics card and even the best would struggle with a hardware-intensive game like Oblivion. The monitor's scaling is, however, pretty good. As a result it would make a very good widescreen dispaly for someone with a mid-range graphics card an Xbox 360. Of course, if you have a powerful PC with high end graphics card, perhaps in SLI or Crossfire, you will be able to get the absolute best out of this monitor, even in demending games.
Finally, you may notice that the title mentions a 16ms response time but the specifications show 8ms. I should mention that Philips have phased out the use of a 16ms pannel and have been using an 8ms (grey to grey) pannel instead. This is good news for those playing fast paced games as it should reduce the chances of image persistance or 'ghosting'. Unfortunately, as far as I know, it's rather difficult to tell which you're getting and there's nothing on the box or the monitor to indicate which it is (the box currently says 16ms either way). As the older stock is sold off it will become more likely that only 8ms pannels will be available but at the moment it's a bit of a lottery. With either a 16ms or 8ms pannel, this monitor remains a very good display and is highly recommended.

Review.......2007-05-05
Good quality product. Gold plated connectors so absolutely zero signal loss. One small annoyance is that if you have two devices plugged into one audio output device, and both your input devices are switched on, the volume of each will be come out at about half of what it does if you'd connected it without the use of these leads. I don't think this a problem that is specific to this product, I believe it is inherent in the fact you are effectively dividing the number of wires within the cable, to each device you've got plugged in.
As an example, I have a computer and a PlayStation plugged into one audio HiFi using these leads. Now normally my PlayStation is turned off, so no problems, but if I turn it on, I've got to almost max out the volume on my HiFi to get normal sound levels. The PlayStation is notoreous for playing DVD and Blu Ray Disc movies quietly too, so this makes it worse. Normally if I'm watching a Blu Ray Disc, I'll unplug these cables and connect the PlayStation to my HiFi singularly. Also, if I have both my computer and PlayStation on at the same time, then switch the PlayStation off, then I get an audio notification on my computer, it's EXTREMELY loud! Just a heads up so you know what you're in for by buying a product like this.
But, most modern HiFi units have plenty of output power, so it's probably nothing to worry about. As a test, I'd recommend trying out your audio output unit with whatever you want to plug into it. If you can get it to an acceptable volume and have it at half or less volume, you know you'll be okay.
Other than that, the product is good though. High quality cabling, transparent plastic coating, and like I said - gold plated. Can't ask for anything more from an audio cable :)
