This high zoom ratio lens is exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras and is capable of covering a wide range of focal lengths from wide angle to telephoto. It is equipped with Sigma’s own unique technology OS (Optical Stabilizer) function. This function uses two sensors inside the lens to detect vertical and horizontal movement of the camera and works by moving an optical image stabilizing lens group, to effectively compensate for camera shake. It automatically detects movement of the camera and compensates for camera shake when shooting moving subject such as motor sports. Two SLD(Special Low Dispersion)glass elements and two aspherical lenses provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations. The super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting. This lens provides superior image quality throughout the entire zoom range. An inner focusing system eliminates front lens rotation, making the lens particularly suitable for using circular polarizing filters and the petal-type lens hood supplied. Fantastic lens - buy this rather than the kit lens.......2007-12-22

This lens is a far more worthwhile investment than the small, cheap zoom lenses that come bundled with most DSLRs. The focal lengths cover almost everything that an entry to mid-level photographer could need, from wide angle 18mm to capture landscapes to the telephoto 200m to minimise the depth of field for engaging portrait shots.

It is a robust lens which feels sturdy and well built compared to the evidently cheap build of, say, the 18-55mm zoom lens which came with my Canon 400D camera.

Its main drawback however is that is not a particularly fast lens when you have it on maximum zoom, with the widest aperture at 200mm being just f6.3, which means that the shutter speed has to be quite slow to compensate. This is inevitable however, unless you are willing to fork out a substantial amount of money for a much pricier lens.

This lens produced some stunning results on a recent safari trip, and it coped well with a range of focusing distances as well as the environment.

If you have invested in a DSLR camera, then it would definitely be worthwhile to add this to your kit - unless you are thinking of becoming a professional photographer, this lens should cover most of your requirements.

A good carry around lens.......2007-01-18

This lens like all zooms of such a huge range is a comprimise. It is made for DSLR so is equivalent to a 28-300 lens in old money. It feels well made. has a good zoom lock. It is a little slow at long telephoto. Actually it is also soft beyond about 150 (220) .... It is worth thinkin also about the 18-125 Sigma. This is a little less versatile but is a sharper optic. increasingly i find i use the telephoto end less and less. If you a birder you will anyway need a longer telephoto.
However remember with DSLR there is a big problem with getting dust in th camera so sometimes an all in one lens can be very useful. If I was staring again i would purchase the Sigma 17-70 for all round use + Sigma 50-200 a recent excellent product from Sigma.

Excellent Quality and Value-for-Money.......2006-10-28

I bought this lens with my Canon EOS 350D. I wanted a lens that would offer flexibility for every day shooting. This lens has not let me down. The build quality is excellent, as is the image quality. I would recommend this lens to anyone.
