I use this with my Sony Cybershot DSC F828, this flash gun IS the buisness, you'll only regret buying the cheaper lesser Sony model. Enough said, take it or leave it, it's your choice BUT believe me, when I say this is good...It really is good.
Great results but needs a little "trial & error"........2005-07-27
I bought this flash unit for my now ageing Sony DSC V1, as the built in flash is only effective over 2-3 metres. This external unit fits in the accessory shoe on top of the camera, and provides flash coverage up to around 32 metres.
It's perfect for illuminating indoor shots where compact digital cameras typically struggle on faithful colour reproduction. As such, indoor shots really do became like daylight shots, with plenty of illumination extending a long way back into most scenes. Another plus is that it's pretty much ready to fire almost immediately after the last shot - no waiting around for 4 or 5 seconds whilst the internal flash recharges !
I tried and tested mine at a wedding recently where the indoor shots inside the church were perfectly lit with strong and vibrant colour separation. Others' digital cameras which relied on their in-built flashes looked pale, washed out, and noisy by comparison. Overall a worthwhile piece of kit for pro-looking shots in non-outdoors settings.
Nonetheless, it's only a 4 star for a couple of reasons:
- it's a heavy unit with it's 4 batteries, and it makes the camera both top-heavy to hold and handle;
- the various flash settings require some trial-and-error to get the best exposure and brightness for particular shots. You have to play with it to understand what setting works best in which situations.
Once you've worked it out though, this is a good addition to your camera. Also, it looks very forward compatible with the newer Sony cameras such as the V3. I say proceed without caution, but only if you take a lot of indoors shots and only if you've had it with the tiny internal flash !
