got this because of the price, the reviews, and usual sony quality? but as a complete novice to the use of camcorders, i have found it easy to use, and watch back, size is great and it has performed very well in different situations. the option to take photos whilst recording is a great function.....very happy!!!!

Very lightweight - I get about 1hr 45 mins battery while recording - hard disk will hold 20 hours recording on medium quality - about 10 hours high quality video - software works with Vista
Why only a 4 ? The vidoe software is pretty pants - the built in stuff with Vista is better but you may want to buy your own package for creating the actual video afterwards.
The "low light" functionality is fantastic though ... if you want to film at night
Bottom line, you can buy this camera with no worries and it will et you create DVD's with menu's but the functionality of the software is pretty limited

I bought this camcorder just before Xmas as i wanted to film the big day and capture everyone's expressions and cherish the memories in years to come. From what everyone else has written about this handycam, it seemed like a good piece of kit, perfect for the amateur.
On recieving it i was ecstatic. It was very small, my hand can actually hide all of it. It looks quite sleek and tech-funky??? I got familarised with it easily but from then on it was dissppointing.
The quality of video is awful, it cant handle light at all. Just goes mental.
The edges are all blurry and it looks downright nasty. When i burned the video i recorded onto a DVD and played it, it just magnified the poor quality. Also, the photo mode is very poor, the quality of stills is bad aswell - i'd rather use my kodak camera.
The image stabilisation doesnt work, once you zoom in your done for. It emphasises the shakiness of your hands so much, its unbelievable.
The bundled software is appaling, so i ended up using roxio easy media creator 10.
I wnated this to be good, i hoped it would be a good value for money camcorder which had great quality and would capture the big day properly. But, i returned it 2 days after buying and am looking for a last minute buy. The levels above this, such as the dcr-190 are about £100 more expensive but the quality seems much better.
IM GOING INTO A SHOP AND TESTING THIS BEFORE I BUY IT. its not the same as just looking at a few pics and reading reviews, you need a hands on approach

Just got the camera 2 weeks back. Firstly, Amazon are fantastic.Ordered for the next day delivery on Fri late noon and it was home on Sat at 10am. Worth the 5 extra pounds as it reduces apprehension.
On to the camera, opened the box, charged the battery for couple of hours and we were ready to go. Good features, well laid out menu though can be a little flimsy for guys with big fingers or for ladies with long nails but very manageable. Easy to record, transfer files, plug in to the TV, hardly find anything complicated on this piece of beauty.
If I have to crib, then all I can complain about is the battery life, can record only about 100mins at a stretch and I have to charge it up again. For home recording and small parties its fine but if you are planning to use this while you travel, then you have to purchase an alternative battery, there is no other go. No point touring 10 hours in a day and recording just 100 mins of film!!! Also the cam goes out of focus quite frequently while zooming in and out but it is nothing big I can complain about.
In case anyone knows of alternative battery options to the NP-FH30, do let me know. Need to buy one fast. Sony charges
All in all, fantabulous handy cam to own. 30GB is more than enough and lastly even the night mode recording is good. Can actually record a Blair Witch Movie :-)

Just purchased my second camcorder from sony and this time is easier to use then my old one which was the DCR-TRV22E.Found this one simplier to use and dont have to carry so many spare parts around e.g flash.spare battery - once fully charged is fine and it fits into a ladies bag without being to bulky! The zoom on camcorder is brill and so easy to transfer videos onto the disc--i couldnt get over how small and compact it is and i also thought that the station to charge it and download pic's would have been bigger than it actually was but that is also small and compact.There arent to many buttons to fiddle with like on the other recorder so this also makes it easier to work.after all.you want a pic there and then not ten mins later when you've found out where all the buttons are!!

works well connected to a battery powered laptop (even with the provided extension lead). it is so nice to have 250GB in such a small package.
data transfers
- to toughdrive: I got up to 10 MB/s with big files, 5MB files go at ~8MB/s
- from toughdrive: well above 10MB/s and even up to 19MB/s for larger files.
the drive is silent, and the internal USB cable is just enough to plug it to most desktops.
it has a Hitachi drive inside.

btw, don't expect to have a fabulous backup software free with any hdd. (Try Second Copy, you wont regret it, trust me)

Nice finish, good grip. Nicer than the slippery gloss fingerprint prone WD drive which I also have.
I use the backup software, first time I have found useful free software with disc drives. SW has stupid american dates on log files though: 01.02.2008 for 2nd of January.
I give it 5 stars but really four and a half because of the pesky/beautiful blue light in the cable. Nice for many, but since I use it as an unobtrusive backup (on a short extension cable, sort of out of sight) with the idea that burglars would overlook it if they took the computer, I don't want a lighthouse effect calling attention to it. My usual solution of a little black card over the light doesn't work when it is the cable that lights up. I rolled back the cover and dug in towards the LED in order to zap it, but cut a wire in the process. Fortunately my fine soldering skills are still with me. In the end I filled the hole and surround with black paint and rolled back the sleeve so it looks fine and the light is barely visible.
With two drives, one in the computer and one safe in a safe or with a relative, swapping each month and keeping each year end one indefinately, then a very neat and cheap archival system is made.
The 2.5 inch drives are really useful, I wonder when the next capacity boost will happen.
How Tough Are You?.......2007-12-07
As a marine biologist I have found this to be a fantastic item. I collect data whilst at work and the fact that the toughdrive is not only shock proof it is waterproof too therefore I dont have to worry about losing my data. Shock proof to say the least, i dropped this off lap and it must have fell 2 meters down a rocky bank, not a millimeter scratched out of it.

Nice portable hard drive, better then the other average drive in a plastic cases in the market! More capacity then my laptop with 250GB inside so should last a while. NTI shadow software included which is a good bit of software, might actually use the free software for a change. Comes as FAT32 but very easy to format to NTFS. Got recommended by a friend and will give him a pat of the back, a 10 out of 10 drive, cheers Amazon/Freecom.

This is a slim and sturdy fanless aluminium case with plastic ends which are held on by small screws. It gets warm but not hot with my Samsung 500GB Spinpoint drive, I can hear the drive accessing but nothing otherwise.
It comes with all cables and screws required for any SATA/IDE 3.5" drive, including both SATA and Molex power supply connections and, of course, a USB2 A-B cable. The 'soft' power button lights up blue when on but its not too bright like some, but it would've been nice if it flashed when accessing. Not tried the supplied backup software.
Slightly annoying is that the manual is only on the CD, there are no printed docs at all. The manual says that SATA drives may take longer to be recognised than IDE when you plug in the USB for some reason, I didn't find it a problem.
You have to bend the cables slightly to slot it all together, and some feet would've been nice if you're not using it vertically with the cradle, but these are very minor things really.
All in all, I think its good value for a SATA and IDE caddy.

For the price you pay you can't really find a better enclosure then this.
It takes either IDE or SATA drives, it holds them securely, it takes up hardly any space and the power supply unit is nice and small. That said there are a couple of small niggling things that made me knock off a star.
The cables used to connect the hard drive are a bit too long. They could of been much better had they been even an inch shorter. I had to force bend them into the enclosure to make them fit - still it is the price you pay to have such a small unit. The other thing is that there is no quick holding lock on hard drive, you have to screw it onto the enclosure frame to make it secure, so there will be no quick hot swapping of drives using this. But then again, at this price, it isn't such a problem :P

That's what marks this camera out for me. In highest quality mode I think the pictures are stunning. I've just returned from a two-week holiday in Thailand. I shot lots of stuff in the various wonderful locations, but still found that I'd used less than half of the 7 hours recording time available in XP mode, so I can't see myself ever using anything less than that standard.
My main niggle is the position of the record button. Used in conventional palmcorder style, with hand through strap, the button doesn't quite fall under my thumb to switch off, so I end up doing a little jiggle at the end of a shot and that degrades the quality of a sequence shot and "edited" in camera.
With regard to Mac editing, I found that iMovie recognised the camera straight away and uploaded stuff without any problem.
Overall, I'm very happy with this camera (oh, and it was cheaper on Amazon than in Abu Dhabi or Bangkok duty frees).

Very easy to use, but no Mac software. Main bad point is that to connect to computer you need to remove the battery as the USB connection is behind it. And yet to connect to PC you need power to turn it on - so you have to plug it in to the wall.

the LED indicated could be better.......2007-12-11
I just ordered this drive and I am quite happy about it. The maximum read speed through USB is 19.5 Mb/s (not bad). I didnt have a chance to test firewire yet. The only thing that is a bit irritating is a LED indicator that has 2 modes: lit with blue when no read/write activity or LED off (!) when reading/writing to disk... not terribly convenient LED design. When you are writing a big file to disk you may think that the disk is simply not connected.

It is a very compact and easy to use camcorder with a 30gb of HD capacity.Its really impressive and i am 100% satisfied with the quality.
I also strongly recommend this against buying DCR-SR32, because you will get an impressive 1 megapixel quality and a remote control,very useful for capture personal moments(SR-32 doesn,t have remote).If you are planning to buy a standard definition camcorder,this will be the best for you.

I decided on the SR52 after reading many reviews on may camcorders, basically because most were positibe and the only negatives were the battery life and no case (Solved by spending under 10 quid on cheap case on ebay and the best battery (the 100 one, not sure of full name) for about £70 on here. (Yet to recieve either as both ordered tonight and I recieved the camcorder today. First usage was a doddle, plugged in the dock, charger, inserted battery then placed camcorder on dock, left for about an hour and a half to charge.
Picked it up and filmed all around my house, the zoom is amazing, nothing short of spectactular, even filmed my brother playing his xbox on his tv and its excellent quality. Maybe loses focus for a slight second if you move and zoom at the same time but this didnt bother me at all as it soon focuses. Sound was a bit low on playback, but soon found option to turn this up. overall first use - excellent.
Installed the software (took longer then expected - 10 minutes) but was simple and easy. Attached usb camera from dock to laptop - instant pop up - took about 7 minutes to import about 15 minutes of footage over on HQ(had to change from the standard SQ) not to bothered about as the quality played back from what I did was exactly what I was hoping for. I had a quick little play, editing and cutting short bits of film out and saving them but that was it.
Then plugged the dock into the tv - RYW cables into the scart then into the TV. Took a bit of fiddling as I was putting it onto my old 21" bedroom tv, and I had to change it from LCD to the other option (again forgotten what it was called sorry, but easy to find as you should now know what you need to change. After I changed it, Voila, it was on the TV and I was watching what I filmed a few minutes earlier controlling it with the remote provided.
Very happy with the purchase although it cost a bit more then I wanted as I was looking for a camcorder to take travelling. Recommend it entirely for beginners and professionals. Although I am a beginner (My first camcorder other than using my Dads 14 year old beast of one) and I am already looking into the Lenses for wideangle/close up, Tripods, Cases, Batterys etc and I have only used it for 5 hours!
Hope this helps you make up your mind as the reviews previously did it for me - although parting with the cash was the hardest part.

This is my first camcorder. I bought it after reading several customer reviews, to be able to keep memories of my growing child.
It is very compact and does fit snuggly in your hands and in your handbag (I would recommend it for ladies). Very easy to turn on/off and easy to operate. Installation is both easy and quick.
As commented by many users, the battery is disappointing and so is the fact that Sony doesn't provide a case...
I haven't gone through all its functions yet, but so far so good.
Would recommend it.

The Sony Handycam SR52E really is a good buy. Reading previous reports on the compatibility of software particularly Apple Mac seemed a nightmare. So one can appreciate my anxieties. But the set up intructions , use of cam couldn't have been easier. If the specification is matched to requirements absolutely no problem. The delivery was next day, which is extraordinary considering this time so near the christmas holiday. However the softcase took 5 days but was from another supplier. Well done Amazon. Good to do business with you!!

Alot of reviews here seem to have problems with software and/or working with MAC.
You really do not need to use Sony software. You can just plug it into USB & PC shows it as removable HD. And you can easy find files on HD too transfer them to PC or view them.
