4 out of 5 stars Stunning compact camera -shame about the lens vulnerability.......2008-01-13

I bought this camera in December having used a Pentax Optio S50 for the last 3 years. The immediate reaction was how fantastic it is to have the larger rear viewing screen. Being 62 and with none too perfect eyesight the ability to see the subject clearly ( and with the LCD highlight facility you can see the screen under all conditions ) was a big improvement.

I have experimented with the zoom facilities and despite the advertised zoom being 10X have found the 15X zoom available when reducing picture size to 3MP to make it worth buying the camera on its own. I also found that the added 4X using digital zoom gave me a remarkably good 60X (Yes 60X!)Ok not good for prints but for long range viewing and shots beyond the range of many a camera ( and most compacts I guess ) a great feature.

I'm still exploring the many hidden feature available under the two Scene modes, and you have to repeatedly study the manual to get the most out of this camera, but for now I am delighted and, using Amazon, saved approx £110 over my local High Street price.

On the downside I constantly worry about damaging the lens shutter cover. Even the manufacturer says " do not touch it" This I have partially overcome by cutting slits in the side of an old 58.2mm binocular lens cap and fit this before putting the camera in a case. A word of warning though - switch the camera to Review mode when you put it away as it is all to easy to switch it on with the lens cover on - hence the slits cut to make it a looser fit. If I can get hold of a 60mm cap it will probably work better. I also worry about scratching the LCD viewing panel it being so prominent so use stick on protectors.
My major concern at the moment is why all photos at maximum size ie 7MP come out as compressed to less than 3MP?

5 out of 5 stars Ultra versatile - this is a superb compact camera.......2007-12-03

I bought this camera nearly three months ago as I was about to embark on a 10 day trip across Britain. In fact, I'd been looking at buying a new digital camera for some time, but the road trip spurred me into action and since that time, I've used it on numerous occasions.

I ended up doing an enormous amount of research into what to buy, which I tend to do on even the smallest item so I wasn't going to spend £200 on a new camera without making sure it was the right one.

So what attracted me to this camera? Possibly the fact that my last 35mm camera took 28mm wide pictures and I'd always appreciated the extra width, particularly useful if you're always struggling to fit everyone in!

However the fact this camera is a 28mm equivalent is, in a way, just an incredibly lucky bonus because I would have bought it anyway, based on what I wanted from a camera and what this had to offer. The beauty about this camera however is that not only are you getting a wide angle camera, but you're also getting one with a 10x optical zoom, equivalent to 280mm. In terms of quality compact cameras out there at this price, that offer that range of flexibility, well I can't think of any others.

So, what about the look and feel of the camera. The first thing you notice is the huge 3 inch LCD monitor. The great thing about this is it doesn't make the rest of the camera appear busy or squashed. Everything is well proportioned. The quality of the image shown on the screen is superb, even more so when you consider the size of the monitor, and I`ve never had any problems viewing this even in bright sunlight.

The build quality seems assured, as you would expect from an item made in Japan. Daft it may sound, but little things like the solidly built Off-On button, zoom lever and battery / memory card holder lock just provide that reassurance of quality.

One of the features on this camera is the optical image stabiliser, which is definitely something you will appreciate when using the 10x zoom feature. Start-up is fast, and repeat photos no problem.

But what I really like about this camera is that its so easy to use. I really like things that are menu driven and straightforward. I don't want to change a setting by pressing a series of totally unrelated or illogical buttons (fortunately whoever designed Panasonic telephones didn't also design their cameras!). This is really simple. Believe me, if I can use even quite advanced features on a camera, this must be well designed.

Onto the video. The one thing that is a shame is that there is no zoom when using video. However that is the case on 99.9% of cameras, so I wouldn't let that worry you. The quality again is fantastic. I went sailing in September and genuinely couldn't believe the quality of the film I took. You'll have to believe me, but I really didn't expect anything like that from a compact!

There are loads of different scene types, so many I think they are a bit of a gimmick but having said that, that's probably because I can't imagine I'm ever going to take "Candlelight" or "Underwater" photos, but then again, who knows. There's even "Pet" and "Food" scenes!

The software that's supplied is all very good, light years away from the rubbish you used to get bundled with cameras. This camera has many other features but I think you get the picture by now, sorry about the pun, but this is a fabulous camera which you won't regret buying.

5 out of 5 stars Great Camera, easy to use, and excellent build quality!!!.......2007-11-28

I looked around at loads of other compact cameras, and finally narrowed my search down a Canon ixus 860is, sony T200 and the Panasoic TZ3.

I took loads of pictures on all three cameras, and after a while it was clearly evident that the Panasonic and Canon took the best pictures overall. The Sony with its hidden lens was nowhere close the quality lens found on the Canons and Panasonic. The Sony although being small and sleek looking took awfull pictures.

So I was finally torn between the canon and panasonic. When compared to the Canon, I found the Panasonic had a better Zoom, excellent build quality, Easy to use and in my oppinion better looking. The Canon was just too flimsy with too much plastic, and the Canon's screen was not TFT unlike the Pansonic's.

The picture Quality on the Panasonic is excellent especially in daylight, with pictures coming out crisp and clear when viewed on a HDTV. However it does suffer a little bit indoors and under poor lighting, but I guess thats to do with most compact cameras and therefore they keep marketing higher ISO's and Anti shake systems in there cameras.

I also looked at the Panasonic FX55 as it was a little bit smaller then then TZ3, however when looking at the results of both the cameras pictures, it is clear that the TZ3 takes better pictures compared to its sister camera the FX55. So I finally bought the TZ3 from Amazon, which arrived in perfect condition and was sent within a couple of days even though I used the Super Saver option

I have overall been very satisfied with this camera, and would recommend this to anyone looking for a camera which takes good pictures and is easy to use. I cant wait to try this out in the sun...

    5 out of 5 stars Great camera.......2007-11-27

I Love this camera, this is the best camera i have owned, the last one was an Hp not very good on video or long distance, so i got this one as my mum recomended it to me, she was not wrong, I Am very pleased with the settings ect on it, very good to zoom in on a distance shot, i have taken some great sun set & moon shots. as i live near the sea, This camera is perfect for that, And it's compact, fits nicely in your bag or pocket.
Well worth the money i paid for it.

2 out of 5 stars Is it me?.......2007-11-23

Bought this camera to take on a business trip on the back of positive reviews here. The 10x optical zoom was a huge attraction, the camera looks amazing (if a little chunky compared to some) and on taking my first pictures I was patting myself on the back for such a great purchasing decision.
However, when I downloaded 200 pictures onto my PC a week later the picture quality was disappointing to say the least. My 5 year old Fujifilm with only 3 megapixels and 6x optical zoom actually takes better pictures.
Now I am not an expert, nor did I tinker much with the settings. I want a camera I can take out of the case, press a button and get on with looking at whatever it is that's worth taking a picture of. The image on the massive LCD screen is picture perfect but depth of colour, sharpness of the image and crispness under zoom are just not there when the picture is downloaded.
It must be me, because everyone else here seems to love it, but mine has gone back and I am using my Fuji again.

    Product Description

The Panasonic DMC TZ3 is a super zoom digital camera inside a much more compact body then you will normally find with this type of camera. On top of this the DMC TZ3 also sports a wide angle lens. A wide angle lens comes in useful for landscape style shots or groups of people. Indeed any type of photo where you need to squeeze in a wide scene will be helped by this type of lens. Another difference from a typical super zoom digital camera is that the DMC TZ3 does not offer a range of really advanced features such as manual exposure controls. This makes it attractive to someone who would like a longer lens but would still like the simplicity of a point and shoot digital camera.

5 out of 5 stars Great little camera at a great little price.......2008-01-03

I've been looking to buy a digital camera for years and when I stumbled across this little beauty I never imagined that I would get something this good. The picture quality is superbe and yes it doesn't have a view finder but you really don't miss it. It takes video footage too and the sound quality is surprisingly good for a camera. I did have a little accident with it (dropped it on the concrete when I was up the Empire State building) but apart from a bit of scratched paint on the front the drop didn't seem to harm it in any way. It's a sturdy little thing and feels good to handle. You really can't go wrong with it.

1 out of 5 stars Great Camera, shame about the view finder.......2007-12-27

I bought this camera to take on holiday at Christmas, I went to the Canary Islands for some winter sun. The Camera takes great photos, if and its a big if, If you are out in the sun trying to see the beautiful big screen with the sun behind you, all you can see is yourself. This camera needs a view finder, its useless in bright sunlight. Sorry I can't recommend the camera at all.

Canon IXUS 860 IS Digital Camera - Silver (8.0MP, 3.8x Optical Zoom) 3.0" LCD

      Product Description

Canon introduces the latest evolution of the IXUS range of digital cameras for style-conscious digital photographers: the Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS. Equipped with a 28mm (35mm equivalent) 3.8x wide-angle zoom lens with optical Image Stabilizer, the 8.0 Megapixel Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS is the successor to the hugely popular Canon Digital IXUS 850 IS. The Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS digital camera offers a range of enhancements over its acclaimed predecessor. These include a 3.0? PureColor LCD and improved Face Detection Technology. The Canon IXUS 860 IS high ISO capabilities work in tandem with an optical Image Stabilizer lens to significantly reduce the risk of image blur. Optical Image Stabilizer Helping the photographer capture more from group shots, landmarks and landscapes, the 3.8x wide-angle lens of the Canon IXUS 860 IS has a focal length of 28-105mm (35mm equivalent). The lens system incorporates Canon?s lens-shift type optical Image Stabilizer (IS) - first developed in EF lenses for Canon?s market leading EOS system of professional D-SLR cameras and lenses - to counteract camera shake. The lens also incorporates Canon?s aspherical lens technology (UA) for maximum sharpness and clarity. ISO features The Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS features a range of ISO features that work in combination with optical IS to virtually eliminate the risk of image blur. A second line of defence against camera shake is Auto ISO Shift, which can be selected by the user to boost the ISO setting just enough to reduce blur. Two further ISO features - manually selected high ISO settings up to ISO 1600 and High ISO Auto - combat the blur caused by typical subject movement, as well as camera shake when poor light would normally require a longer exposure. Photographic capabilities with luxurious style The Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS combines enhanced photographic capabilities with luxurious style. The classically curved Canon Digital IXUS 860 IS has a two-tone body that contra

5 out of 5 stars Top job underwater.......2007-12-31

Compared to my old S40 this camera is excellent when used underwater in the canmon housing. The controls, even with gloves on, are eay to use. In fact it is easier to use in the housing than out of it. It's slightly positive bouyancy so if you really worry about that, stick some weights on the housing.

On land, the only fault is Canon removed the view finder. Although the screen is bright enough in most conditions I still like to stick a camera up to my face to take a picture and find framing a photo using the lcd anoying. I guess that's the price you pay for a 3inch screen so won't deduct a point.

The video recording is good for a stills camera and records till the card is full so you can do quite long movies if you want.

      1 out of 5 stars Very disappointed.......2007-12-30

First of all let me explain I have owned a previous model of Canon IXUS the 50 for nearly two years with out a problem.

Upgraded to the IXUS 860 IS three days ago and have already returned it to the shop for a refund. No problem with outdoor shots they looked better than the IXUS 50 and the anti-camera shake system seemed to work fine as well as the face recognition system. Nice large LCD screen on the back much bigger than the 50's one but no optical veiwfinder like the 50 however. The 860 looked very nice but was not as solidly built as the 50 which has a metal body. The 860 IS was quite 'plastic' and nothing like as well built.

But unfortunately lots of the indoor flash photos I took had small out of focus `blobs' on them when I looked at them on my PC. Looked a bit like the spots you get on windows when raindrops dry. Some pictures had it some didn't, very odd.

Never had this problem with my old Canon IXUS 50 camera so unfortunately I have had to return the 860 IS already.

Very disappointed, I didn't expect to find such a problem with a camera for this amount of money. Might be just a fault with the one IXUS 860 IS I bought, however be warned.

Not sure if I will try another or wait until the next IXUS comes out and try that. At least my old IXUS 50 still works OK.

4 out of 5 stars Great IS, too much noise........2007-12-22

Another reviewer has critised the camera's use of F2.8 even in bright daylight. Well, I suspect that's a (rather poor) attempt at the camera trying to mask the problems with noise in the chip.

It really is a disappointment. Admittedly I'm coming from using an EOS350D SLR, but since the pixel count is the same and the processor now a DigicIII instead of the digic II on the eos350d, I was rather expecting better.

The only thing that I am really really impressed by is the image stabilizer. It doesn't get every pitcure spot on, but I am still very very impressed... it certainly ain't just a gimmick!!! It's just a pity that what improvement the image stabilizer gives is taken away by the poor quality chip.

The stupid touch sensitive buton can at least be switched off so it operates like a normal button. And the camera may not be totally intuitive out-of-the-box, but once you get used to it it does operate very well. The cover to the connection part (usb cable) is very flimsy and totally our-of-charactor with the rest of the camera (which feels very substantial).

Power on to first shot time is fast. You aren't going to lose a shot because of waiting for the camera to ready itself.

Review of pictures with a class 2 card is a bit slow, although if you hold down the buttons it speeds through low resolution thumbnails, and you can also jump in screens full of 9 images as well, so it's still very usable.

There is some chromatic abberation in the corners of the image at wide angle, but far less than I feared there might be. Although there is a loss of definition in the corners at wide angle. But nothing you wouldn't reasonably expect from a compact camera at this price. It's definitely worth having that wide angle... the problems aren't anywhere near enough to detract from the benefit of the wide angle.

The image processor is good (the colours look good when viewed overall), although it really does seem to be trying too hard to overcome the noise on the chip as it is (to me it seems that areas of detail lose detail because the image processor is having to try to remove noise). Even at ISO80, although you can't see the noise, you can tell (for example try finding details in trees in a landscape) that the image processor is still losing image detail to overcome noise from the chip. At ISO1600 you aren't going to get a nice picture... the noise is atrocious.. in particular it seems to suffer from chromatic noise which the image processor _should_ have been able to overcome! (anything over ISO100 shows noise... even below that the evidence is there that the processor is still trying to cover up noise from the chip)

I would really really like to say that all it needs is a RAW mode and aperature priority and you could mothball your D-SLR, but unfortunately that's not the case. The chip in the EOS350D at least, is still far superior in quality (less noise), so there's still reason to hold onto that D-SLR. I think with the noise problems with this chip a RAW mode would be pointless.

I haven't used any other compact cameras so couldn't comment how the noise compares to competitors. And to be fair, Canon isn't marketing this as a replacement to their DSLRs so it's probably a bit unfair to compare to them (even though they do claim the same number of pixels it really is a case that there's more to quality than just the pixel count!).

But my main reason for buying this was something that's a bit more discrete and portable that would let me take pictures where carrying a DSLR isn't practical. And for that it does it's job ...albeit not quite with the image quality I would have liked, but this is a compact that costs half the price of a DSLR so probably not unreasonable ... hence why I still give it a 4 star rating.

(And if anyone from canon is reading this, there's small scope for the image processor to remove the chromatic noise, but other than that the image processor is already doing tooooooo much to overcome the rest of the noise... get the sensor sorted!!!!!!)

4 out of 5 stars Canon could have made it a little better!.......2007-12-14

I bought this camera because I wanted a pocket size camera with a decent low light capability. My previous camera a Casio Z50 suffered from noise at ISO 200 especially at night. I have to say the Casio was better built esp in respect to the battery/card cover. I would say this was important if you will be recharging/changing the battery/card often. It really is too flimsy and is inexcusable when paying much more than other compacts on the market. The best way to transfer images is to remove the SD card and put in your card reader. The other downside, more for people interested in optical image quality is that it tends to use F2.8 most of the time even in broad daylight and I can't see any "scene" mode that would change that. The other thing I don't like is the touch dial. You're better off using the "Func Set" button in the middle of it and then making changes. Compared to the other models on the market this is the better option and this is my opinion after owning it for a week.

      5 out of 5 stars pleased.......2007-11-28

i bought this camera becuase of canon's good reputation - and i was not disappointed
i chose this model over the 12mp becuase of the sleek look, big screen and the extra features which i LOVE!
colour accent is such a good feature and creates really different and creative pictures
the camera is also really easy to use and has good battery life
it has not disappointed me yet and is a HUGE improvement on my old nikon coolpix

2 out of 5 stars Beauthiful looker but pictures too noisy.......2007-12-16

Maybe I've got it set up wrongly but I find the pictures really noisy when I crop in. Really disappointed with the pictures compared to my older, clunkier but far clearer Canon Powershot S50 (which got broken by my daughter so I treated myself to a neat little red Sony DSCT100 instead. Really handy size, but soooooo disappointed with the images so far. Nothing I could enlarge/print :(

          4 out of 5 stars Kodak V803 Review.......2007-08-25

Very impressed with this camera, have been using it at work mainly. Easy to use and on the whole good functionality. Close up use in macro mode is reasonable and image lighting is useful when used in awkward places and in dark (lets you know where you're pointing the camera). Was that impressed brought one for myself to use, very good price as these were recently going for about £250 in Argos. Very nice in black. Recommend 2GB Transcend SD Memory card, this will give you plenty of room for photo's and video. One touch photo transfer software is also good.

5 out of 5 stars Point and Shoot.......2007-12-22

**Please regard this as a 4.5 star review**

I love photography, and I love to have control over the image-taking process. However, control over a compact digital camera is a rather fruitless affair because there is so much depth of field to the images. So, given the creative limitations that you naturally have with compacts, what should you be looking for? Well, sharp images, good colour, ease-of-use, compactness, good build quality and a nice field of view range.

The stand-out part of this camera is probably the Leica lens. 28-100 is the perfect range. A nice wide angle for indoor and landscape shots up to a very useable telephoto end. Range aside, the lens also has a very good Image Stablisation feature (far better in the lens than on the sensor!). The lens is superb, giving lovely sharpness and colour as well as perfectly reasonable light-gathering ability in low-light conditions. That, coupled with the Image Stabilisation means that the camera is very useful in parties and other low-lit situations - with or without the flash. Speaking of the flash, it does a nice job without washing out all features. No more eyeballs and nostril pics.

Also nice are the three aspects - traditional photoframe and two "widescreen" modes -- very nice for playback on TVs/monitors and impactful panaromas.

The Panasonic doesn't offer you much by way of control, but it does offer PIC modes. These help, but I found that the full-auto iA mode is very good at working out what you're trying to achieve - especially when you enable the face detection mode. The Image Stabilisation works very well and the high ISO noise, although not as well resolved as say the Fuji F31 or Canon models, is not as bad as previous Panasonics ("Venus as a noise" as Bjork once said -- but the Venus III engine is certainly better than previous incarnations). The noise is certainly there at ISO 400, but no more than if you used ISO 400 film. On a 6x4 print, the noise would be more than acceptable. Even upto ISO1250, the noise is perfectly acceptable - especially at sensible print sizes. An ISO1250 shot might not be the best option for a 12x10 print, but then no compact would really give you that without some PC-work (and probably turning to black and white). For real world situations, I'm not put off by the noise.

I bought this camera for my parents who wanted a simple to use P&S camera. This camera does tick all the boxes and provides very good images. The included software is more than adequate and also pretty easy to use.

I would recommend this model over the FX55, which is identical other than a 0.5" larger viewing screen. It's a lot of money to spend on little extra benefit.

If your photographic needs are to have a neat, stylish camera which takes excellent shots without any user-intervention, this is for you. If you want full creative control, I would say that you won't really get it without going for a DSLR. Depth of field control on a compact with a small sensor is not possible - fine if you want lots of DoF, but not so for shallow DoF. So, buy the camera in the knowledge that it has loads of good points, one so-so point in the noise.

If it's a compact you want, certainly put this on your shortlist and try it out against the competition.

4 out of 5 stars Good at lower ISO .......2007-12-10

          The Good:
Engineering & assembly quality is excellent. Stated "made in Japan". Battery life is good. Controls fall easily where they should, the
menues are logical & easy to navigate.
Wide angle & Macro work well. AF is acurate & fast.
Face detection generally accurate with good results.
On occasions can be confused if the subject(s) wearing glasses, or has long hair falling forwards. The LCD is big & bright, & auto adjusts to the prevailing ambient light.
The many scene modes are a bonus, and generally function as intended. The 7 frames per second mode is good for nature or sports shots.
No red-eye on any of the images taken using the built-in flash.
Results are very good in Auto mode, with the ISO fixed at Max 400, ISO 200 is better. I.S.functions well.

          The "Not so Good"
8.1MP on a small CCD sensor results in a grainy/noisy image above ISO 400.
Insanely, the ISO can be manually adjusted up to 6'400! (HI ISO MODE)

5 out of 5 stars Easy to use.......2007-12-06

I bought this camera after reading many reviews, was going to buy the FX55 but it was a lot more money than this one and all you get is a little bit of a bigger screen! Its really easy to use (and I am not technical at all) the auto mode does everything for you and the picture quality is brilliant!
