Good looking and well built.......2007-11-14

For ages now I've been nagging myself about the need to back up all my photographs - however, being a lazy type I've not bothered. Recently though, with the birth of my son, I've realised that losing these photos would be nothing short of disastrous. So, my quest for a backup solution began.

Being something of a geek I have a fair few old hard drives kicking around so it seemed a good idea to make use of them by buying an external IDE to USB enclosure and, after checking out the reviews, this is the one I purchased.

The device is made up of an external metal case with a tray that slides into it and it locked shut with small screws. The case is matt black and rather smart with a grille on the front and USB and power connections on the back. There is also a power switch and an LED on / off switch. The case also has a stand to hold it vertically. To attach a hard drive you simply put it in the tray and attach the IDE and molex power connector. You can then attach the hard drive securely to the tray with 4 screws.

Now this brings me to my first negative - to securely attach a hard drive you need to screw it to the tray then screw the tray to the case - fine if your are only really using a single drive in it but a pain if you want to chop and change - some sort of clip would have been preferred so I don't have to dig out the screwdriver every time I want to change drives. Of course you don't *have* to screw the drive to the tray and the tray to the case but if you don't the tray can slide out of the case when you move the device around - not very satisfactory.

Anyway, that aside, putting in a hard drive and attaching it to your pc brought up the "new hardware found" dialog for me (on Windows XP) and voila, a new drive appeared - simple as that. Copying over data was pretty fast, for me working out at around 1 gigabyte a minute. No complaints there. Now what? How do I safely turn it off? Well, no help from the extremely sparse instruction manual. So, I used the Windows "safely remove" option and that seemed to work ok.

After that I tried swapping hard drives and encountered another issue - the end of the IDE ribbon cable came off in my hand. I've changed a million hard drives and this has never happened to me before so maybe the quality of the cable was a bit lacking. Being a geek I happened to have a spare super-short IDE cable to get me back up and running. Maybe I was a little heavy-handed, just be aware.

Anyway, those two issues aside I'm happy enough with it. I would have given it 5 stars if there had been a clip / locking function to attach the hard drive to the tray and the tray to the case instead of having to use screws. However, its sturdily built, looks relatively sleek and works fine so that's my only complaint.

Ok, so I bought one of these for a couple of reasons.

The first is that I needed an external caddy, preferably one that didnt look like it was sawn off the end of a lump of scrap metal or designed by a 3 year old with a day-glo crayon. This is the 21st Century now folks, and Apple have shown us we can have an iPod styled future, so live with it.

The second is that I need both SATA (well, preferably eSATA, but i can live with and eSATA to SATA cable) for speed when connected to my main PC or a (rather great) Synology NAS box I own, and USB for compatibility with anything else that happens to need a disk plugging into it.

So this Icybox unit looked really pretty. And the advert said IDE or SATA to USB and SATA. So I ordered it.

First impressions were good. Nice packaging all the right bits in the box. Fit and finish of the product generally rather good actually.

And then I looked at the instructions. OK, so I know thats naughty, but I am a manager these days, not an engineer, so technically its not against the rules. And there the problems began.

I could work out how to get the device apart easily enough, and as I wanted to plug in a SATA drive, I had to change the Molex power lead for a SATA one in the box, and moved the IDE cable out of the way. So far still no real problem, although the power and SATA cables looked like they would bend a bit more than I would have liked.

But hang on a mo'. There were two SATA ports on the tiny circuit board that I could choose to plug the SATA cable into. Which one should I chose ? I randomly picked one.

On screwing the case back together and plugging it into the PC via the USB port all was fine - plug and pray detected the mass storage device and all was fine in the garden. And then I tried plugging it into my PC via SATA.

Nothing I did worked : reboots, fiddling with SATA RAID settings, BIOS updates, nothing.

And then a thought hit me - what about the other SATA port ???

Sure enough, I took it apart, swapped the cable to the other SATA port on the circuit board, screwed it back together and bingo ! The PC saw it - and it went like the clappers ! Great !

The excitement lasted about 5 minutes until I disconnected it from my PC's SATA port and plugged it into the USB port again - and then the harsh reality of it hit me when the PC recognised a USB mass storage device - with no hardisk in it....

The truth is, dear friends, that this isnt really an "IDE or SATA to usb AND sata" device.

No.

Its an "IDE or SATA to usb OR sata" device. That lttle word change from AND to OR makes a BIG difference...

I have now returned it, but did use it mostly in SATA mode and it worked well, but if you did big transfers (I did 300gig or so) I did notice I got some error messages under XP. I dont know if this was the fault of the drive/caddy getting overheated (there isnt much ventilation) or the PC getting upset at that amount of data, and I guess I will never know.

Alternatives seem to be the AKASA Integral P2 range, which has a switch on the OUTSIDE of the case to switch between USB or SATA (how useful!) or the Venus range which looks prettier than the Akasa and has some nice cooling fan action going on, but I dont know about a switch thingymawotsit on this one.

Oh, and the Akasa seems to have a disk limit of 400GB which the Venus doesnt (although I have seem adverts for the Akasa elsewhere that doesnt have the ref to the 400gb limit, so maybe they have a new version out or have tested it with larger drives).

So there you have it. I hope my sorry story was of use.
