Superb.......2007-12-22

Despite it arriving late (due to the delivery company rather than Amazon directly), it was certainly worth the wait. The pictures I have captured already are superb considering they have all been taken indoors so far and definately out-perform the standard 18-55mm lens you now get with the eos 400D (the body I am currently using). I have waited a year to buy a replacement for my handy 17-55mm, looking around at all the different options but am glad I stuck with this one! The 17-55mm USM looks too large for my likeing and the cheapest L series version is far too expensive for my budget to allow (even if it is only around £100 more!) However, after reading several magazine reviews I came to learn that this lens is the best all-rounder and cheapest out of the three. Perfect. The Ultra Sonic Motor (USM) is excellant compared to my rather clumsy non-USM 75-300mm zoom lens, which I bought earlier on in the year, and the focusing system has only let me down on the one occasion when experimenting in a very dark hallway (which is to be expected). The IS is astounding and makes a huge difference to your images, meaning that 1/60secs is no longer the most sensible setting for handheld shots!
The only downpoint I have found to be associated with this lens is that you have to buy the unique hood seperately and from a seperate seller (meaning that you cannot expect it all to arrive at the same time/get super saver delivery included) whilst also at additional cost, althouh it is well worth the extra money as it is not only very effective but also helps you, to a certain extent, to forget that three hundred and fifty odd pounds on a new lens, plus however much more for a new filter has just been spent!
Be aware, the lens is a lot larger than the standard zoom so ensure that you have checked it will fit into your kit bag whilst attached to the body before purchasing one!
I now have a super-quality, reliable, fast and accurate focusing lens just in time for Christmas, which will hopefully last for years to come!
Please note: This lens will not work with full-body sensors becasue it is "efs" rather than "ef" (i.e. if you have a Canon eos 5D, 1D/s Mark 2/3 etc. the lens will not work) - a point to bear in mind if you think you will ever consider upgrading (although you could just use the upgrade as a second body to your existing camera and set of lenses; if you can afford it!)

Gives Photography another Dimension.......2007-04-16

I bought this lens as part of the kit, with a Canon EOS 30D last May, now almost a year later I feel I know both the camera and the lens well. The focal range of this lens is perfect for so much - from photography people to nature it is the perfect walk about lens. Added to the fact that it has Image Stabilisation, it seems to give the whole process of photography another dimension. I have recently taken a load of pics at a nephew's wedding, taken both inside and out, with and without flash (Canon 430EX - which incidently is amazing too) using RAW, and must say that even I, who is so critical of his own work, think they are far better than anything I ever took on my old SLR. The quality of the lens is great and cannot really be faulted.

Yes the lens is a little on the heavy side, but quality counts especially when you only get one chance of a photo, like weddings, kids, sunsets etc. I would love to be able to afford an 'L' lens, something I will save for, but until then, this lens will continue to be my trusty walk about.

My advice is simple, if you want a quality lens for every day use, with good zoom and IS, then look no further. If you are buying a new DSLR, like the canon EOS 350D, 400D or 30D, then don't even consider anything other than this lens, so long as you can stretch to it - believe me, you will not be disappointed. I love it.

A good lens for general purposes..........2007-03-10

I think this lens is good enough for many dSLR users. It suits anyone who love taking lanscape pics. IS helps a lot. However, its maximum aperture is 4 so you're rarely able to freeze a moving object.(except that you hv a plenty of light) IS doesnt matter to do this. Although it cannot compare with L-series lenses, do you actually need that quality? Overall....it's very good for many situations and for traveling.

I bought this fantastic lens a few months ago and since then it's been 70% of the time mounted in my Canon 400D. The IS is just great!!

An excellent lens for outdoor photography.......2007-01-17

This lens is the perfect compliment to any Canon digital camera. Its a little on the expensive side, and it is definitely not small, but it produces brilliant images, has a great zoom and focal range and the autofocus is wonderfully quiet. The image stabilisation works quite well in many situations, but most of the time isn't a completely foolproof alternative to a tripod of course.

Pretty good.......2008-01-08

Overall pretty good bit of kit with everything on it. Set up is pretty easy as everything is pre-loaded but, unfortunately, you have to make your own rescue disc as none are provided due to the pre-loading. Nice clear screen but recessed keys on the keyboard will take some getting used to. Sound quality is not great even with all the Dolby stuff and the "ACER sub-woofer" etc. Max. volume is low and it's difficult to use with the in-built mic if talking to someone else - you just cannot hear them. Probably worth 4.5 stars if the sound system/volume was better, in which case just about a 4.

Very pleased with this monitor. Excellent value for money and no dead pixels. Just thought I would share a little piece of information for anyone thinking of buying one, it may be useful to you. When I was first adjusting the picture quality, the images all seemed washed out no matter how I set the contrast and brightness levels. So I downloaded a driver utility for my graphics card which allowed me to set the gamma levels on a sliding scale
and hey presto beautiful rich deep colours. Problem solved. Hope this helps.

Samsung 720N Monitor.......2007-12-17

With LCD panels seemingly constantly falling in price, and increasing in both size and response time, there are probably fewer reasons to buy a 17" display than there were not long ago. But the Samsung 720N is not only affordable (even taking into account the low prices of some 19" monitors available), but has a native resolution of 1280x1024; significantly higher a resolution than any 17" CRT monitor could support and large enough to give most users more than enough "elbow room" on screen.

The monitor's other specifications are more than adequate, if not particularly notable; an 8ms respond time, analogue (standard) and DVI connectors, and various configuration options and extra features provided by Samsung's bundled software and drivers. The drivers on the included CD aren't needed to install the monitor -- installation was indeed as simple as attaching the cables and switching it on -- and the software Samsung provide is only likely to be worthwhile for someone who wants great control over the image being displayed. I uninstalled it after a short time and have found the default display, achieved simply by switching the monitor on, to be perfectly acceptable.

The monitor itself is ergonomically very well-designed, solidly-made and generally easy on the eye; black, brushed silver, and with a relatively subtle "Samsung" at the bottom of the panel beside the menu buttons, it neither stands out nor looks at all out of place on a desk. Its small power on light is somewhat bright, but certainly not distracting, and the aforementioned OSD buttons are firm but easily pressed; the on-screen display itself is easy to navigate, clear, and functional. Its small, circular, sturdy base suffers from very limited adjustability, but it is solid and, like the panel itself, obviously well-made. All cables and connectors, including an adapter for those with Macs rather than PCs, were included with the very well-packaged monitor.

The 720N's actual image quality is, overall, impressive for a monitor at this price range. Viewing angle is not good; correct colouring and contrast is quickly lost when it is viewed from very much of an angle. A small amount of white backlight "bleed" is noticeable when viewing a white picture on the right-hand edge of the monitor, and its default setting may be a little too bright for some users, but these issues are either minor or easily remedied with the monitor's extensive adjustment options. With an 8ms response time, little ghosting should be evident, and it is -- in fast-paced games a small amount of ghosting is noticeable, but as with the viewing angle and backlight issues, only the most discerning users are likely to be troubled by it. Text is displayed sharply and clearly, colours are bright and even, and the picture offered by the 720N is generally very good. The monitor arrived with no dead pixels, and at the time of writing has functioned reliably for several weeks.

I have the 15" version and I did not buy this from Amazon, however, this does not matter. I questioned at first whether this would actually work, so I decided to try it out. It is dead easy to set up:

1. Place notebook cooler on desk.
2. Flick the switch on the back to on.
3. Plug one end of the USB cable into the cooler, and the other into your notebook/laptop.
4. Turn your laptop on, and the fans start going and constantly cool your laptop.

It's very easy, and even after hours of use on the laptop it still keeps it very cool. It's warm, but when my laptop base used to be so hot you could hardly touch it, and now it is only just warm, I find this product amazing. WOW!!!

Excellent bit of kit this for a very good price £395.00 from Amazon.
First of all the delivery, absolutely excellent, Amazons communication as ever was spot on and they delivered really quickly.
The laptop is well worth the money. Takes about 30mins to set up but once running is pretty quick for only 1gb memory running on Vista. I've increased the memory to 2gb and it makes a huge difference.Fitting the chips is easy but the memory cover needs a bit of force to remove once the screws are withdrawn,use a broad flat knife so as to not damage the case.
The screen is superb but if I could change anything I would recommend a matt finish screen rather than the 7520's glossy one.
The scratchpad is fine but I personally found it a little difficult to use (my fault,maybe??) I've added a mouse, 99p off Ebay and its much easier to operate..
The wireless Lan is quick and efficient, no problems there.
The weight is a little on the heavy side but it is a big laptop so should be expected.
Would I purchase this PC again? Simple answer, absolutely YES.

this is such a powerful machine the nvidia 7000m grphics card featres dual screen veiw which works so well, the processor is so fast, i can run moveis whilst downloading and playing games absalutly fine no problem for this, the screen on it so good i've had a crystal brite before and i thought that was good but this is amazing in comparison, it comes with a hole load of pre-downloaded software like windows media player 11 and internet explorer 7 its such good value for money i would recomend this to anybody looking for a £400 laptop.

This is great value for money 17" laptop , for general use.

THIS DOES NOT COME WITH A WEBCAM , Amazon does make mistakes , but if you care to do a bit of research , then you would know what you are getting.

1gb is fine for general use , but i would recommend upgrading to 2gb as standard at ~£30 , this will allow Vista and all your software to run at full speed.

For a budget 17" laptop , this takes some beating.

Also for under £50 , if you search online , you can get the Acer 3 year warranty + 17" laptop bag + mouse.

Hard Drive is split into 2x~32gb partitions ,with the other space taken up for the rescue partition. Setup takes about 1hr 30mins including the burning of the rescue DVD's for peace of mind.

Not sure why people are confusing this with other machines, perfectly clear in it's description above!, I also bought this from tesco (for the same price) as amazon didn't have it then, but have to say that it is an amazing piece of kit and performs fantastically well, for eg; I copied a dvd of tv programmes I had recorded for a friend and it did the whole lot (3.8gb of video) in less than fifteen minutes! very fast!, Twice the speed my desktop could do it!. Vista is very slick and pretty to look at, and is far and above xp in it's operation too!.
