Customer Reviews:
value for money!.......2007-07-24
For the money this lens is superb. I use it for photographing motorcycle racing. It has performed very well in MF. AF is too slow, but i never use that anyway. Happy days, very pleased!
Not for the Professional or Dedicated Wildlife Photographer.......2007-04-11
This lens is the subject of many reviews that castigate its build quality and performance. It is certainly cheaply made and slow. But it is tough enough to survive as a lightweight zoom that takes excellent pictures provided that you recognise its limitations. The dedicated twitcher will not buy this lens, but will probably try to discourage the rest of us who would otherwise get great pleasure from casual photography and don't want to be burdened with heavy gear and high prices. If you can afford the 18-200 VR the convenience is irrefutable. Otherwise - as a budget addition to a standard zoom - this lens is both practical and surprisingly good.
Amazing!.......2007-04-04
Cheap, light to carry, yet with Nikon build quality, and as sharp as a nut (well, as sharp as you'll need!) On my D70 it focusses quicker than some reviewers might suggest. I am really please with it.
Same optical quality as the ED version. This one BEST VALUE.......2006-01-11
I purchased the D version as an upgrade to this cheaper 70 - 300 G and after many test shots can find NO difference whatsoever in the optical quality between the two (I looked really hard). The D lens is built better than this G. On the D version I was very disapointed that only 1 of the 13 glass elements has ED glass and seems a bit of a con. The speed of focusing is also the same. This lens does suffer from a little purple fringing as does the D but otherwise takes good pictures. Strongly recommend that you buy this much cheaper G version of this lens. I suspect the optics are identical. You need a good steady tripod when used on maximum zoom.
With good light it's great!.......2006-01-08
There has been much criticism of this lens but for the cost of it - and given decent light so the speed can be cranked up - I think it's great. This and my D70 have produced some fabulous, sharp images even at 300mm but on a normal, English winter day it struggles.
Product Description
The AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED is a high-performance super telephoto zoom lens that has been designed to meet the demands of both digital and 35mm format SLR users. It offers a 4.3x zoom with a range of 70-300mm (105-450mm on a DX Nikon D-SLR) and features ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements that ensure superior optical performance. This lens incorporates Nikon?s second-generation vibration reduction system (VR II) that allows flexible hand-held shooting by stabilizing the image to the equivalent extent of using a shutter speed that is four stops faster when compared with a conventional lens (as determined by Nikon performance test). The SWM (Silent Wave Motor) and IF (Internal Focusing) ensure fast and quiet focusing action and the nine-blade rounded diaphragm makes out-of-focus elements blend smoothly to produce natural-looking harmonious backgrounds.
Customer Reviews:
Very sharp lens and VR works a treat.......2007-02-19
After owning the G and DX 70 300 lenses I have found this one to be very slightly sharper. The fringing is less on this lens than the other two. The 70 - 300 G lens is incredible value and mine was just as good image quality as the DX version. The focusing on this VR version is faster and quieter than the previous versions. VR works great but noticed a strange anomaly with the VR. If you sit down or rest against any fixed object then this reduces the effectiveness of the VR system. Also a useful tip is if you take many consecutive shots standing up you may find one of them very sharp. In fact using this technique I have taken a 300mm shot at 1/4 sec shutter speed tack sharp. I have proved that you must switch off VR when taking pictures (and the 18-200mm) at normal to high shutter speeds as VR takes the edge off of the picture when it is not needed. This lens is great. Stop it down one stop and the whole 70 - 300 is very sharp. I have taken a hand held shot of the moon with VR enabled and got a very nice picture showing the craters and scars across the moons surface. Very pleased with it.
