Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I'm extremely pleased with it. .......2008-01-02

This is my first digital SLR. I did A-level Photography many years ago and used a Pentax SLR so familiar with the concept. I've been using a compact digital camera in the last few years but now want to take more adventures and creative pictures.

The E410 I bought came with a DVD which ran thought most of the features which I found extremely helpful.

If you go to youtube and search for E410 you can find reviews from a few camera magazines and one from the Gadget show (channel 5).

I'm extremely pleased with it.

5 out of 5 stars Superb camera.......2007-11-12

Am a relative beginner in this field. Have been dithering for ages about which DSLR to get and finally ended up with this one. It is superb. I cannot fault it so far, and the photos produced are really excellent quality. My first camera was an Olympus OM10, and nothing has ever quite lived up to it since. Have tried Canon, and whilst impressed with their superb IXUS 40 compact camera, the digital SLRs leave me cold. Too heavy, and not the picture quality I get with this Olympus. The E410 is so light and nifty in comparison. Can imagine taking it out and about, unlike its heavier counterparts. Am not even a serious amateur, but straight from the box this camera was taking superb pin sharp shots, even before I had fully mastered the settings. The only downside is the manual, which I do find confusing at times. However, the superb camera review available on dpreview's website does answer a lot of my questions. Would suggest a visit there for the low down. They 'Highly Recommend' this camera, incidently! One thing they suggest, to increase image sharpness is to turn off the Noise Reduction and set the Sharpness to (-2). I did this and they are right!

Anyway, my advice is to take the plunge, don't go with the Clunky Canon Crowd. Get a neat and stylish Oly 410 and I am sure you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars New DLSR user.......2007-09-30

I recently purchsed this item, having had a Pentax ME Super for many years.Unfortunatley it needed repairing and the cost seemed to expensive compared to the advantages a new DLSR gives you.You don`t have to buy films and wait to get them developed to see your results, also you are not limited to the amount of pictures you can take.(subject to the memory card size).
I am still learning how to use the camera, but have found the picture quality stunning.
I have used the`live view`function but find it easier to focus through the view finder,as i find it easier to track the subject this way.
The camera is easy to hold being very light and even with the large lens it pretty easy to focus.
If anything it has to many functions for someone new to DLSR photography. but the manual covers everything you need to know, but you do need to read it a few times to know what you are doing. You always find it will do something else each time you pick it up.
I would also sugest that you purchase a spare battery as a backup.
Finally for any one wishing to take the step up to DSLR photography i would reccomend you look at the E410,but do shop around as the price difference between suppliers is huge!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent SLR system.......2007-08-11

I am very impressed with this digital SLR. For years I used Olympus OM series film cameras with satsfaction. As digital camera image quality improved, I decided to go digital and have tried Nikon, Canon and Fuji SLRs. All were bulky and heavy, showing their heritage as modified designs for 35mm film adapted for use with smaller digital sensors.
Having design their E-series as digital from the outset, Olympus seem to me to have far superior handling qualities. Carrying an E-410 all day is far preferrable to any of the rival makers models I bought. I first used an E-400, and agreed with the reviews which found images taken at high ISO "filmspeed" settings somewhat noisy. This problem is resolved in the E-410 which uses a different sensor. Another improvement is in the autofucussing which is again, much improved.
As well as the conventional SLR viewfinder, the E-410 gives one the option of composing shots in the LCD screen on the camera back as a "live preview". It would be great if this worked as quickly as on a pocket digital camera, but there is in fact quite a delay between pressing the shutter release and the image being focussed and captured. Notwishtanding this, I have found the live preview invaluable for macro work and I would hate to be without it now.
Another good feature of the recent E-series models is the "supersonic wave filter for dust reduction". Unlike film SLR cameras, digital ones can be ruined by dust on the sensor introduced when lenses are changed. Nikon offers sofware which maps and then cancels out the specks - sounds like a rubbish "solution"! Olympus and Canon offer sonic systems which shake the sensor at start up to keep dust away. I'm ultra cautious when changing lenses, but I'm greatly reassured by reviews which suggest that the Olympus system really can be effective.
Finally Olympus seem to be developing a truly comprehensive system with a great (if expensive) selection of lenses and flash units. For clinical medical and dental photography they have an excellent 50mm (equivalent to 100mm in a 35mm format camera) macro lens which can also capture potraits or full body views. This can be coupled to a ring flash or twin macro flash with TTL metering and capable of taking perfectly exposed images straight out of the box. The only weak part of the system is the flash ring FR-1 needed to couple the flash head to the lens. I have bought three of these, and all three have broken in normal use!
The problem with the FR-1 is that the front element of it is held on to the main body by three TINY screws which just aren't up to the job. As I needed to keep working in three different centres I didn't return the units (what would be the point in exchanging one badly designed bit of kit for an identical one anyway). My solution is to permanently glue the front to the main body with Araldite. I hope that this shockingly poor piece of design isn't indicative of other problems elsewhere in the range.
Finally, pricing. Because the UK economy is OK at present, we seem to fair game for overpricing in lots of areas. There is not a huge difference between the cost of Olympus camera bodies and kits in the UK and other markets but lenses and accessories are up to twice the price here. Like many others, I buy a lot my hardware in the USA. If Olympus are serious about developing the full potential of the UK market, they need to look at the way their distributors and dealers price their products here.
I look forward to trying the E-510 with its' in camera image stabilisation soon.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Camera.......2008-01-17

This is a brilliant camera. I've had it for a couple of months now and taken photos in a variety of different weather and light conditions. I have yet to have a bad shot nor problems with the equipment. I shopped around quite a bit and finally decided on the Olympus over a comparable Nikon. I'm delighted that I did - I couldn't be happier.

5 out of 5 stars Olympus E-510 Package.......2008-01-03

Having bought one at Christmas I have just had a few days in the Lake District with the camera. I am delighted with the handling of the camera and lenses and the image quality is superb. I am really pleased with this buy and can strongly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Spoilt for choice.......2007-12-30

Having decided to buy a digital SLR since the middle of 2007 and having read numerous reviews, I finally decided to buy the Olympus E-510 twin lens kit in December. The camera does what it says on the box and is a brilliant piece of engineering. I am still working my way through the instruction booklet that came with it, the results so far are beyond all expectations.

5 out of 5 stars Europes BEST SLR for a reason!.......2007-12-04

After I read a couple of reviews on this camera I had a look in a shop.
I must admit I own a couple of olympus compacts but making a good SLR that competes with Canon and Nikon is another thing.
When this got voted European camera of the year bu EISA I decided to buy it and I could not be happier with the results.
The main things I like are the built in image stabiliser which works with any lens I put on there!
It also has 'live view' which is great, it works like a normal digital camera so you can see the picture on the large screen.
Really could not recommend it more.

5 out of 5 stars What a Camera.......2007-08-24

If you want a superb camera you cannot get anything better.....at the moment.I can't fault it,if you can afford one you will not be disapointed.

        5 out of 5 stars Superb camera!.......2007-08-11

Had one since June, with the standard kit lens. Optics superb, very sharp. Colours great straight from the camera. No fringing,
Image stabilisation works great (1-2 stops extra). Dust filter works great - never seen any dust on any images.
Handling great - just the right feel, weight and balance. Very light weight with kit lens.
Images slightly soft, easily fixed by setting the camera to Low Noise Filter and Sharpening to -1 to get the best RAW images.
Aperture of f3.5-f5.6 not as wide as some (comparable to other kit lenses) - can get a wider standard zoom but more expensive. The Image Stabilisation lets you take shots at lower shutter speed though. Build quality good, except the card cover appears flimsy.

5 out of 5 stars Good for Mac users too!.......2008-01-11

Excellent little machine, though mine came in a white case. Still looks good though.

It's amazingly small and ridiculously easy to use. Plug into your PC/Mac and it appears as an external drive.

Mac users: this recorder uses WMA files. The Apple site states that iTunes will play them, but it doesn't. The fix is simple: go to Microsoft.com; type in Quicktime and download flip4mac; then go to a WMA file's Get Info on and change the file association. That's it!

5 out of 5 stars Tiny package, big machine.......2007-09-07

          I use this machine for:
          > recording acoustic music rehearsals
          > market research interviews
          > snooping on people.
It's excellent for all three, but for music it's much better with an external mike. Plus points are the utter convenience of a recorder the size of a grasshopper's holiday suitcase, tiny weight and simple basic controls. The USB connection is also a fabulous advantage: computers recognise it immediately.
Downside: small controls can be fiddly, and managing files is frankly much better done on PC.
I have one more use for it too - it's got a diddy speaker, so you can listen to stories late at night. Yummy.

          4 out of 5 stars worth a look!!!.......2007-01-25

The new WS-320M appealed to me because of its 1GB of flash memory, small size, WMA codec, and built-in USB connector.

This DVR is much smaller than other DVRs. It is almost half the volume and weight of the DS-2200 (similar to the DM-20). The WS-320M is constructed mostly of plastic, but it is well made and assembled with screws. There is a mechanical hold switch. The USB port cover / battery holder slides off smoothly after pressing the release button. No significant force is required to slide off the port cover or to reassemble it. There is a groove you need to line up first to reassemble the port cover. The small AAA battery cover is not attached to the DVR and can get lost. There is a hand strap hole, but no hand strap is included. The buttons, switches, and d-pad are well-made and provide a small amount of tactile feedback. The smaller size of the DVR makes it very portable but it can cause problems operating the switches for those with larger hands. Anyone used to small music players should have no problem operating the WS-320M. However, someone who regularly uses a voice recorder for dictation should probably stick to the larger professional DVRs like the Olympus DS-2200 and Sony ICD-BM1.

I started testing the WS-320M without reading the manual. It was easy to use. Button and menu operation is very logical. The LCD screen is smaller and less bright than the DS-2200 / DS-2, presumably to save battery life. The screens displays a large amount of information including folder name, time elapsed, time remaining, battery, record mode, and more, though not necessarily at the same time. A press of the OK or STOP button will change the information displayed. While recording, the screen displays a horizontal bar sound level meter.

The WS-320M uses only the Windows Media audio format codec. Other Olympus DVRs use the proprietary DSS format. I prefer the WMA format over the DSS format because the audio sounds more life-like. DSS format in SP or LP mode sounds harsh and full of compression artifacts. Recording in STHQ mode on the WS-320M with the built-in microphone produces satisfactory recordings but even better sounding recordings can be made using a high quality external microphone like the Sony ECM-DS70P or the Olympus ME51S. Overall, I liked the recordings on the WS-320M more than the recordings from my DS-2200. The DS-2200 tends to clip high volume sounds. Using a stereo dubbing / attenuator cable, I "ripped" some songs from a CD player to the WS-320M in STHQ mode. The "ripped" music sounded like FM radio quality or better. All of the voice recordings are file date-time stamped appropriately and date-time stamped internally. You can see the internal date with the program DSS Player (not included).

When I plugged the WS-320M into PC, Windows XP recognized it and installed it. There appears to be no driver available for Windows 98. A new drive appeared in the My Computer window. I was able download the recordings to the PC at about 50 MB per minute. I then uploaded some WMA format audiobook tracks to the WS-320M voice folders. The transfer rate uploading is about 26 MB per minute. This is faster than USB 1 and is comparable to many small mp3 music players. I was able to play the audiobook tracks in voice mode.

In general, the voice mode operation of the WS-320M is very similar to the operation of the DS-2200 or DS-2.

As a music player, the WS-320M is comparable to a Creative Muvo Nano / N200. The sound quality is good with a strong low end and a very low level of background hiss (only noticeable with sensitive earbuds). The volume levels range from bedtime quiet to painful. Music is transferred to the WS-320M by copying music files to the music folder or to the root. The WS-320M can handle two levels of folders (artist and albums for example). Navigation on the player is by folder and not by tags. The player uses mp3 tag information only for the screen display. This player can only play bitrates from 5 kbps to 256 kbps. It will not play 320k mp3 files.

This player has most of the functions of dedicated mp3 flash memory players. There are settings for RANDOM, REPEAT, REPEAT ONE, Play One Folder, Play All Folders, ROCK, FLAT, JAZZ, POP, User 5 band EQ, SRS WOW (surround sound / trubass). You can change the order of music tracks and delete music tracks. There is no bookmarking function and no sleep timer.

More information can be gleaned from the WS-320M user manual available for download from the Olympus website.

The WS-320M is a good player / recorder for a student. You can fit a week's worth of lectures on the recorder and still have about 500 mb left over to fill with music. I would not recommend it for a business person needing a true dictation recorder because of its small size and small controls. But for someone who wants to record meetings and seminars and listen to music, it is a good choice.

          Pros:

Small size, good price benefit ratio, long battery life for a voice recorder, good construction, built-in USB connector, informative display, good quality voice recordings, WMA codec, dictation capabilities, external microphone input, date-time stamped recordings, plug and play for file/music transfers, and MP3/WMA music player with DRM support.

          Cons:

Tiny controls, separate battery door (risk of loss), lesser quality built-in stereo microphone (typical of consumer level recorders), no remote control capability, no included dictation software (DSS Player Lite is available for free download), no included carry case or strap.

4 out of 5 stars Digital Voice Recorder and Music Player - yes!.......2006-06-09

This is an extremely light unit which could compete with the audio i-Pod since its massive 1GB memory can hold hours of good quality music. Playback through a pair of quality phones was very pleasing. It could do with a bit more output amplification though.
It can record an unimaginably long lecture or meeting in dictaphone mode. Physically its USB connection makes communications with a PC an absolute doddle.
I found that its microphone socket did not appear to accept a signal from an external stereo microphone unless that input was mono'ed.
Input sensitivity for both internal and external mic is automatic, so there was no way of boosting the internal mic or attenuating the external one.
Also its internal clock gained one hour per day which meant that I had to re-adjust the time each time I wanted to use the recorder.
No guarantee or warranty form was provided, so unless the defective product was returned to Amazon within the first 30 days, subsequent contact with the Olympus people became rather convoluted.

Amazon supported the product well and replaced the first one supplied and when the second one proved to have the same problems, offered me a complete refund.
Since I could not find another (non-Olympus) replacement, I decided to refuse the refund and accept the drawbacks as minor irritations.

4 out of 5 stars Mac Tiger users- buy with confidence!.......2006-06-03

Great piece of kit. Records beautifully for my purposes (academic interviews and seminars). Audiophiles may not be impressed, but then are they ever? Controls are small but workable, menu system is clear and intuitive. The USB mass storage was recognised straight off by both my PC and Mac. The music player is excellent- the sound is clear and bright, beats my Sony Network Walkman hands down. More to the point, unlike the NW you don't need a horrible piece of software to download your music. Mac Tiger users may be put off by the need to use Windows Media (doesn't work properly on Tiger). Don't worry! You don't even need to use Windows Media Player, as they suggest- just drag and drop your music folders into the 'Music' folder. One star knocked off for the flimsy battery cover, but it would only be half off were that possible. Recommended.

One more thing- it isn't the same size as a Nano, it's slightly longer, so before you buy a case, do your measurements. Don't count on it fitting stuff designed for the Nano.
