Sigmas little cracker.......2007-12-09
Now I know what all the fuss was about.I have hardley left this lens down since I received it a fiew days ago. It's just PINN SHARP. A reil cracker of a lens.It would be nice if I cowld include some pics with this post and let you make your one mind up do? PS I have just added some pic's so you can make your one mind up as to the quality of this lens.

Permanant lens.......2007-05-09
This was my first foray into non-Nikon lenses (couldn't afford the Nikon equivant at the time) and I have to say that this is a stonker!!! Images are pin sharp, little to no fringing and I now use this as my main lens on my D200. The Macro is amazing, really sharp (watch the aperture as 2.8 renders most things out of focus!!). Partially agree with the previous poster about focus lock on, but guess what: switch to manual focus which is dead easy to do. Solid, well built optic which has convinced me to look at the Sigma option before splashing out on a Nikon
Very sharp but not much use as a macro........2007-05-07
Snap off some pictures of a brick wall and you will see that this lens is probably the sharpest you have ever seen. It canes the 18-200 VR and just about every other lens. However, try using it for close-ups on the D200 and you will soon become seasick as it fails to focus. You'll soon realise that the 18-200 VR is actually a better bet for close-ups and for most other things. It's cheaper, too.
Crisp clean and powerful........2007-05-01
Well built lens thats absolutely razor sharp. This really is a fabulous true macro lens, with seriously good optics. I'm always a little worried about using aftermarket lenses, but this lens is just too good to be true. The only catch is that its so good it puts my other lenses to shame, making me favour this even for non-macro work, and using it as a short tele lens. It comes in a proper well made case, with a proper strong lens hood, which I find acts as an extra lens protector.
Make sure you buy a 58mm skylight as a matter of course.

Price/Performance Perfection.......2007-08-27
Another cracker from Sigma, I must say! This lens is built like a tank, is optically very VERY good, and is definitely worth more than what you pay for it.
Optically, this lens is hard to beat. Sharpness is brilliant throughout, even at f/2.8! When you stop down further to around 7 or 9, the quality REALLY kicks in!
Colour rendition is good with colours vivid and saturated just right.
Another thing is that this lens handles flare really well, so no worries about sunlight creeping in and casting nasty hazes..
The build-quality of this lens is mind-boggling too for the price. It's very compact, and built like a tank. It's weighty enough to survive most knocks and it balances the cameras weight really well.
The autofocus is snappy and not loud at all. It finds the target first time 99% of the time and rarely ever hunts, even in low light.
I would seriously recommend this lens to amateurs, enthusiasts and seriously even professionals. This lens is truly a must-have to everyone and in my eyes is the perfect walkabout lens! I hope this helps!
Superb Lens.......2007-07-20
I bought this lens for my Canon 350D after reading loads of reviews (mixed views) and having previously only bought very cheap lenses (£70 28-80mm zooms) I did not know what to expect.
I have had this lens for 4 days now and I have not took a bad photo yet! The colours are rich, the photos are sharp and the macro is amazing - the lens will focus at 70mm with the supplied lens hood touching the object you are focussing on.
This is the most expensive lens I have owned and the difference from cheap kit lenses is amazing - the results are almost as good as those achieved using my Canon 50mm Mk II lens (if you haven't got one of these - get one).
Overall - highly recommended and at this price cannot be faulted.
A well made lens that's pretty sharp too.......2006-11-17
After reading nothing but good reviews about this lens, I took the plunge and bought it for my new 400D SLR. I hadn't bought the 'kit' lens and thought this would be a decent substitute.
It certainly feels much better built than the kit lens I tried when I bought the camera, and it's quite a bit heavier. In fact, it's surprisingly heavy. But it is reasonably compact when zoomed to wide angle, though the lens extends a fair way when you zoom towards 70mm.
The zoom action is fairly smooth, though nothing to write home about, and the focus ring a bit 'light' and fast, but perfectly okay.
The lens has a nice, slightly rubbery textured finish with a bit of glitter in it. It looks like a metal crackle finish but obviously doesn't feel like metal. I was very impressed with the quality of the finish for the price. A lens hood comes in the box.
Perhaps because of the f/2.8 widest aperture, the front of the lens seems quite large, and the filter is 72mm which makes filters more expensive.
Although f/2.8 doesn't last long through the zoom range (just a few millimeters) it does mean a bright viewfinder.
And, like any lens of this type, you won't get the best out of it at maximum aperture. Stop down a bit and you'll find it's very sharp, especially if you move away from wide angle. Otherwise, expect some soft corners and a bit of vignetting. You can stop down to f/36 at maximum zoom but diffraction makes this option more or less unusable.
Compared to my other lens (the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II), this is, surprisingly, sharper and has much better colour. Images from the Canon lens seem to have a 'graininess' to them in comparison. The Sigma's images look silkier.
This lens's 'macro' performance is what made me buy it. It's great to have a good wide angle, reasonable zoom range AND macro. Having said that, it's not true 1:1 macro of course, so you'd still be better off with a macro lens. At 70mm you can focus on something that's pretty much touching the lens (the minimum focus distance is 20cm from the sensor, not the end of the lens). Focus super-close isn't a strong point though.
Focus seems quick to me, and despite what I've read, it also seems quiet and unobtrusive. It'll hunt a bit sometimes in low light at the long end of the zoom but I think this is again typical. Occasionally focus seems to be a bit hit and miss, but maybe I need more time and experience with this lens and camera combination.
One thing I don't like is that the focus ring moves during autofocus and I often find it catching on my hand where I hold the lens.
But otherwise, I'm pretty happy with it so far: it's compact, well made, nice and sharp (within limits), has a good zoom range and the bonus of a very good macro ability. At the price, it's a winner.
