Product Description
The iPod Universal Dock serves as a convenient and elegant home base for charging, syncing and more. And for the first time, it works with all iPod models that have a dock connector, so if you own more than one iPod, you can keep just one Dock connected t

Beware the lack of leads.......2007-11-30
I received this for a birthday present assuming it would have everything it needed to get me up and running in the box. However it is virtually useless as it comes with absolutely nothing-you literally get the dock and adapters so any ipod can be used with it. Other than that you can't connect it to anything until you have bought all the leads. That is why I have given it 2 stars as it is a nice idea in principle but only if you have all the leads that are necessary. Otherwise you are shelling out alot of money for a few bits of plastic.
Get the newer model.......2007-09-21
There is a newer model on Apple's website, that has a remote control included, can navigate playlists, and supports the iPod Classic/Touch. If you have one of those newer models then check it out (haven't seen it on Amazon yet)
very fragile socket connections.......2007-08-10
I am about to buy my 3rd one as all of them have had connection sockets at the back which rather quickly (less than a year) failed and loose faulty contacts started happening.
Not the quality or fragile product I would expect from Apple and certainly not at that price for something which basically is a plug connector...
NOT an apple TV replacement.......2007-06-11
I think I read here someone who was satisfied with this dock as an apple TV replacement. I would just like to comment that such a claim is a bit misleading as this dock does not allow to navigate the menus of the ipod with the apple remote. The only functionality available with this dock and the apple remote alone is play/pause, prev./next track, vol. up/down. It is NOT possible to change playlist/film without using the ipod itself (i.e. the "menu" button on the remote does not work with the dock).
Other than that I am satisfied with design, build and packaging. I would have however considered other docks if I had known about the lack of remote interaction...
I will remind again that this does NOT come with cables, and does NOT come with the apple remote.
Strangely Essential Yet Practically Useless.......2007-06-10
I imagine that most people who buy an iPod, end up buying an Apple iPod Universal Dock. It's strangely essential yet practically useless. It's one of those things that you HAVE to have, yet you don't need. All it really does is hold your iPod in an upright position, making it look neater on your desk. As with every product of course, there are pros and cons to the Universal Dock...
Pros:
- It looks nice
- It's heavy, so it will stay where you put it
- It has an Infrared sensor on the front, so you can control the docked iPod with an Apple Remote
- It has a Line Out socket on the back, so you can connect the docked iPod to a speaker system
- It has an S-video Out socket on the back, so you can connect the docked iPod to a TV for video playback
Cons:
- It doesn't really support the iPod, making the docked iPod awkward to use in it
- It's only available in white, not black
- It costs £25, which is a good 20% of the cost of a 4GB iPod Nano!
- It doesn't come with ANY cables, such as an iPod Dock Connector (an extra £15)
- It doesn't come with an Apple Remote (an extra £19)
- A Universal Dock, Dock Connector and Remote cost £59 in total. Mmmm, what great value!

an overpriced product but if you need it you need it.......2006-07-14
it does what it says on the tin. it connects many ipods to your pc or mac. it is not universal though. it has a multitude of adaptors that can be used with it so you have to keep changing them anytime you use a different ipod. the remote is a waste of time so don't bother as the menu function only works on a mac not the ipod. i won't be throwing it away, but i won't be raving about it either
At least its a universal dock.......2006-03-15
Essentially this is just the latest version of the proven iPod dock. Yes, it has an IR port that is compatible with the new iPod remote, but other than that the look and design is unchanged. It reasonably well built, solid and does what it says on the box.
Its only real selling point over previous docks is that it comes with a series of trays that allow it to be converted for use by any iPod with a dock connector (that's the serial port on the base of the iPods). That includes any ipod back to the 3G models. This is good news, as some docks Apple produced recently weren't compatible with older generation iPods, leaving the owners of such machines to hunt down end of line docks for their models on secondhand websites. Finally it would seem that Apple is giving some thought to those who brought into the whole iPod trend early and have held onto those machines.
Even better, and more suprising, the iPod remote will work with older generation iPods via the dock. You don't get full functionality (the 'menu' button on the remote doesn't work with my 3G pod) but you can skip tracks and change the volume and it works better than many of the remote units already on the market. Of course you have to buy the remote separately.
And yes, the complaints about the lack of any cables with this iPod dock are valid. Unfortunately no iPod dock has ever come with cables, unless bought as part of a stereo connector pack, so don't expect this to change anytime soon.
So overall, whether you're new to the whole iPod revolution or you're the proud owner of an older generation iPod, if you want a dock for it this is the one to choose. The remote system is a nice addition, but as always with Apple extras and peripheral equipment are thin on the ground for the price you're paying.
Mean old Apple.......2006-02-07
OK, so it's an iPod dock. Nice construction and has a reasonable weight which makes it seem sturdy. If you wanted a colour other than white you're out of luck. It comes in a big box (bigger than an iPod box!) but when you open it up there's the dock on one side (the instructions are hidden behind this) and about 5 dock adaptors (aka little bits of plastic to make sure your particular iPod will fit into the dock).
But there's no cable. How mean can Apple be? Everything you can do with this dock requires a cable of some sort, but they don't provide even the basic USB:iPod cable which would allow you to connect the dock to your PC/Mac. And there are instructions for the remote control - but that, of course, is something else you have to buy separately. Mean, mean, mean.
Yes... Its a dock.......2006-01-20
hmmm... not much to say hear really appart from maybe apple could have include this with the i-pod, like they did with the 3rd gen version. The dock can be plugged into your computer via the usb (if you dont have a mac ;) cable that comes with your i-pod, or it can be hooked up to the mains to charge... but, dont be fooled because IT DOESN'T COME WITH A MAINS ADAPTOR! you need to buy this seperatly.
This is a well made product that does the job, it's just not worth the benjamins
