Decent iPod lookalike full of features.......2006-11-25

This is a Chinese MP3 player (and more) styled to look like an iPod, but much cheaper. You can't dispute the value for money. As well as playing your MP3 or WMA format music, it also has an FM radio with 20 presets that works very well. You can record directly the radio program you have tuned, as well as doing voice recording. The colour screen is bright and clear, and this device will display photos and videos (not sure what formats will work). When I plug in my high-quality headphones, the sound quality experienced from this little device is excellent, and the several EQ presets make a noticeable difference to the output. I especially like the bright sound of the "rock" setting. The cheapo earbuds that came with it were very poor, and it is worth buying some decent ones that will plug in to the 2.5mm socket. (Most earbuds, alas, come with a 3.5mm plug). The built-in battery recharges when you attach the player to your PC's USB port, and you also get a mains adapter that will do a recharge when you are not near a PC, e.g. on holiday.

The big problem is the instruction book, which is possibly a computer translation from Chinese to English. A novice user is likely to be stumped by this, and you are going to have to do lots of experimenting to find out how to get things to work. I haven't worked it all out myself yet! If you are planning to give this as a present, be aware that the recipient might need some help.

With Windows XP, you do not need to use the included driver CD. Just plug into a USB port, start up Windows Media Player v.10, and the Sync function will load and delete files from the device.
