Style isn't everything !!!.......2007-07-23
What a great looking radio, and looking at the spec., I was convinced this would be a good buy as a birthday present for my wife who was wanting a portable that would also allow programmes to be recorded.
Well, that's as far as it goes - great looks, good spec, but oh dear great big disappointment.
My initial 'test' to make sure it worked before wrapping up failed to pick up any stations even though you can actually see the transmitter from here (West Devon), but admittedly the cottage is thick granite walls so I was prepared to give it a second go and fiddling around finally got some results, so I was happy.
But trying to use the radio in earnest revealed that this was yet another product that has been designed by stylists and engineers and not an ergonomist to be seen for miles. The twiddly dial, combined with very amateur software design makes for frustrating operation.
The audio, as others have said, is frankly horrible, combined with what appears to be a linear volume control so that it's impossible to get decent adjustment at low levels made me cringe. Thankfully my wife isn't that critical, but even she had problems and that just leaves me feeling guilty having bought her a second-rate birthday present and not being able to replace it yet.
But imagine my surprise when, having put a new set of HP2 batteries in (I thought this would be a good set because it uses large batteries and therefore they should last a while !!!???) not only was the 'power' LED on all the time but the SPDIF optical output was also obviously active even when the set was switched off (or should I say, on Standby). Sure-enough, after 48 hours of being switched off, and about 25 minutes use, the batteries were dead. Replacing them with new ones just proved the point a few days later. Is this a specific fault on our set or just another grotty bit of software programming that could have been overcome by a 'proper' on-off switch when in battery mode.
And as for that EPG function that I thought she'd be so impressed with ..... 'No programme information available' is all we get.
The recorder records OK and plays back OK, but wouldn't it have been nice to be able to use that SD card like a proper recording device and import / export to PCs and have proper files etc., but no ..... those 12-year-old software programmers couldn't manage that either.
So, all-in-all, next time Mr Morphy Richards, how about shelling-out a few quid on decent software development and ergonomics instead of just making it look good ...... although, I guess, it's looks that sells, nowadays isn't it !!!!
EPG Very Good when it works...which is doesn't.......2007-03-14
I bought this recently amazed by the prospect of using the EPG system which sounded great. Had a few problems to start with as it only brought up 6 or 7 music stations to record from. However, later that day many more stations were available including BBC7 which was the one that interested me.
I set the recorder and it worked perfectly.
However, since this, the radio either says there are no EPG stations available or reverts back to the choice of 6 or 7 (none of which interest me and none are BBC)
As others have said the sound quality is very poor, especially as the shop price is £[...], spoken word is ok, but for music use it's terrible. I bought this for a fraction of the full price and therefore am happy to set the recording manually and use it more as a standard DAB.
If you can buy it at a cheap price and don't mind the glitches, buy it, if not, don't spend a lot of money on a DAB which doesn't deliver.

Received this as a Christmas present. We live in an underground house with walls one metre thick, but I still get all the stations even in the centre of the house.
The record facility is for me the best feature, as I can record onto the SD card all the programmes during the day to listen again at night.
My two gripes are that you have to wipe everything off the SD card to record again when full. It would be nice to be able to be selective on what you delete and what you keep.
Also, the revolving button in the middle has a lot of functions and I wonder how heavy handed people might get on with it's sensitive settings?
However, I would really recomend it.

Could not recieve my favourite DAB radio station (LBC) and EPG only works with BBC also reception was poor on both digital and FM radio.
