this is a great camera for all pictures. i got it yesterday for my christmas present and took ovr 100 photos, and not one of them was blurred. they were taken in low light without a flash on super high sensitivity mode and they came out perfectly. it is a great camera that looks really good and the photo quality is amazing. if you are thinking about getting a camera get this one.

    5 out of 5 stars Sony DSC-W200.CEH Digital Camera (12.1MP) 2.5'' LCD.......2007-12-22

The design and build are good
The 12mp chip does not really give a better picture quality than an 8mp.
    The face detection works well.
The digital smart zoom results are really good
Battery life is average , would recommend a second one.
I do not like the way that sony allows you to access the red eye flash option in the menus when set in the P / M mode although in auto mode with face detection selected the red eye flash is quite clever it operates automatically when a face is detected
When set in auto mode the picture result are good to average but when set in P or M mode excellent results can be acheived.
Would I recomend it ? yes but also take a look at the Fuji alternative.

4 out of 5 stars Great camera - rubbish user guide.......2007-12-22

Typical beautifully engineered Sony product. The camera I'm sure does all you want and more, but its going to be hard to get the required information on how to use it from the supplied user docs. The paper guide tells you nearly nothing, the PDF CD guide is better but leaves out how to use some key features, for example the Program Mode. Mac users again are like second class citizens in the guide. I really would have thought Sony could do much much better.

    Nikon Af-S Dx Zoom-Nikkor 12-24 F4 G If-Ed Auto Focus

    Product Description

The AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED is the first lens in the new DX Nikkor series. It features ultra-wide angle zoom capability ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass and Nikons exclusive built-in SWM (Silent Wave Motor). The lens is targeted at professional and advanced amateur Nikon D-SLR users who demand both the advantages of high optical performance and ultra-wide angle focal range.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars the only genuine nikon solution for ultrawide on a DX camera.......2007-11-10

excellent lens and indeed more pro-like than amateur-like in price but also in specs. The new 14-24 promises to be one helluva lens for the full frame D3, but its premium price is no match for the 12-24 wich is DX only. If you're buying a D3 and don't already have the 17-35 2.8, the 14-24 will be the better solution since it also is decent on DX; otherwise, if you don't go pro with a D3, the 12-24 is excellent (and still can be used on the D3 although with obly half of the pixels). You obviously don't have the extreme distorsion you get with the 10.5 DX fiseye.

    5 out of 5 stars Premium ultra-wide zoom.......2007-08-18

Tamron, Tokina and Sigma all make Nikon-fit ultra-wide zooms in the 12-24 range or thereabouts, and all of them are at least a couple of hundred pounds cheaper than the Nikon. For most purposes all three are more than satisfactory. However, for the last drop of quality, this lens outperforms them all.

    A little history:
In introducing the D1 digital camera, which set the scene for the new generation of digital SLRs, Nikon opted for an APS-C sized sensor, which is smaller than traditional 35mm film, and gives a 'crop factor' of 1.5, which effectively means that all lenses behave as if they were one and a half times longer than their 35mm equivalent. The reasons for this choice have been extensively debated. However, the practical consequence was that photographers shooting at the extreme long end of their longest lenses were delighted. An 80-200 suddenly became a 120-300, a 300mm became a 450mm. Since lenses become vastly more expensive as they go above 300mm, this was hugely welcome to sports photographers, photojournalists and birdwatchers. The downside was that at the wide angle length, the enormous 17-35 'super-wide' became the equivalent of a 25.5-52.5 -- a useful range for general photography, but nothing special when it comes to wide-angle.

Nikon's solution was to release a new series of 'DX' lenses, of which this 12-24 was the first.

As such, it needed to satisfy two very distinct markets. On the one hand, professional photographers who relied on extreme wide angles wanted a lens with the highest specifications. On the other, amateur photographers wanted a lens which was reasonably affordable, and also practical.

This lens is a compromise to both groups. For the professional, it offers constant aperture -- so that it stays at f4 throughout its range. This contrasts with the Sigma and the Tamron offerings, although the Tokina follows the Nikon lead in offering constant aperture. All of Nikon's professional zoom lenses are constant aperture lenses, and all of its consumer-grade zooms are variable aperture. It also uses ED elements, which, at the time, were reserved only for professional zooms, in order to offer the minimum of chromatic aberration and the maximum in sharpness. It is an AF-S lens, which speeds up autofocus and reduces battery drain, and also allows you to autofocus and then manually adjust.
For the amateur, this lens is reasonably light, compared with the older 17-35, although still heavier than the 18-35 ED f4-5.6.
The compromise, of course, is in the maximum aperture -- at f4 this is a stop slower than other Nikon pro lenses, which are generally f2.8 maximum.

So, the real question is, how good is this lens? The answer is -- really quite good. It does show some distortion at the extremely wide end, and some chromatic aberration. It is considerably better between 18 and 24. Nikon could probably have fixed these problems a little better by increasing the overall size and weight of the lens, but this would have probably doubled the already steep price, and certainly made it less appealing as a carry-around lens for amateurs and professionals alike. The good news is, both lens distortion and chromatic aberration are now easily fixed in software. Photoshop and Nikon's own Capture NX can deal easily and simply with chromatic aberration when the images are shot in RAW, and Panotools, either as a standalone, or as a Photoshop plugin, can quickly and transparently deal with the distortion -- and with the converging verticals which are characteristic of wide angle lenses, if that's what you want. Alternatively, DxO will deal with them in one go, if you prefer that workflow.
More importantly, this lens is detailed and sharp right across the field of view. It is not _as_ sharp as the amazing 70-200 f2.8, but this is unsurprising given the problems organising light from such a wide angle. On the other hand, it is extremely unlikely to suffer from the motion blur which is the bane of long lenses. More to the point, advanced refocusing algorithms (not unsharp masking, which only creates the impression of focus) such as Refocus, FocusFixer and FocusMagic, are capable of interpreting the very slight softness of this lens into pinsharp images.

With all these advances available, is it still worth getting the Nikon rather than one of the independent alternatives? Ultimately, that depends on what you want. Software does a better job of interpreting a lens the better the lens is to begin with. Therefore, no matter how good software gets, you will always get a better final result out of this lens than its current competitors. The difference is slight, but it is noticeable. Ultimately, if you can notice it, it will probably continue to annoy you. On the other hand, you can pay as little as half the price for the admirable Sigma lens.

As for me, I tried various options, and settled with this one.

I own both the Garmin GPS12 and the Garmin etrex. Why? Because I couldn't make up my mind. So I bought them both. After playing with both units I've decided to keep the GPS12 and sell the etrex for the following reasons. #1 The GPS12 has a stronger internal antenna that locks onto satellites much faster then the etrex and does not lose signal even under a heavy canopy of trees. #2 The buttons on the face of the GPS12 are larger and much easier to manipulate with one hand than the etrex. The etrex is designed to be used in your left hand and the buttons are vary small. The GPS12 can easily be used in either hand even with gloves on. #3 The map and compass pages provide more information without the need to constantly press buttons and switch pages. #4 The GPS12 map page lets you zoom in and out and scroll up and down, left and right. With the etrex you can only zoom out and lose detail to view a larger section of your trail. Yes the small size of the etrex is an advantage to backpackers such as myself, were every effort is made to minimize bulk and weight The GPS12 is about the size and weight of a typical cell phone. When I head into the forest to get away from it all. I rarely stay on crowded trails with all the other people getting away from it all. I take a topo a compass and now a GPS12 as a safety net because it will work even in the middle of a heavily wooded national forest.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT BUT FLAWED!.......2007-11-24

I own several different cameras and went for the IXUS 960 IS mainly because of excellent reviews ( I ACTUALLY PRODUCED VERY CLEAR DETAILED IMAGES ON 36" X 36" PRINTS FROM THE 960-THAT SOME SLR'S ONLY ASPIRE TO) and its obvious qualification for streetwise/ spontaneous use. However, had I tried 'hands on' before purchase I might have decided differently Why?....

For a camera of this quality, a simple design flaw such as the battery/memory chip cover coming open every time I gasp that end of the camera and slide it from my pocket, is not good enough. It's not broken, simply there is no lock on the slider...think again canon. The Simple fix I use... put small piece of 'Blutack' or similar on the interior of the battery cover slider where the a/c port accessory hole is found.
    MINUS ONE STAR

Another negative is the Titanium body. It is very slippy and exceptionally difficult to hold, especially in cold weather with dry hands. This is all compounded by the swept/fluted wedge shape of the body, opposite the controls - it's the camera equivalent of a bar of soap. The camera strap is a necessity, not an option, if you want to keep this otherwise excellent camera away from the ground. My fix is to stick a rubber grip tape on the front of the camera body.
    MINUS ANOTHER STAR

Buy a second battery and the largest memory chip you can afford. Canon's supplied 32mb (YES THAT'S MB NOT GB)is an insult to any photographers intelligence.

    In a nutshell...

Fast street-wise high definition sharpshooter you really have to get to grips with.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Ixus by far.......2007-11-22

I was one of the first to buy a this model and have given it a thorough road test over the last few months and have to to say that I am very pleased with my decision to stick with the Ixus brand. I have owned five different models now and when I compare this 960IS with the first an Ixus V its like comparing a mini with a 5 series BMW, and in real terms it is far better value for money. I must admit, I was tempted to go for a change this time and looked hard at Panasonic and Sony products but I am so pleased I stuck with Canon.
Of course there are compromises to be made and no camera is going to do everything you want it to but here you almost have it all with high MPs and high quality movie too. (I dont even bother with my camcorder anymore). The only grumbles I have are the Titananium case is very slippery and I have almost dropped it a couple of times and the smooth lines of the case dont help either. Also the the SD card supplied is such a waste of time I dont know why they bother including one.

2 out of 5 stars Great specs, but does it deliver, is it reliable?.......2007-10-23

Bought the 960 to replace my excellent Ixus 400, a camera that had been excellent over 3 years of use.
The 960IS appears to be the ideal replacement, more pixels, great features and a 40m waterproof housing available.
The image quality is acceptable, not DSLR standards, but great for a compact digital. The 640x480 video is outstanding, superb detail and high frame rate, great for home DVDs.

    BUT.....
There are a couple of things that are not good.
When videoing in bright sunlight, say water reflections, my camera is displaying hundreds of vertical white and green lines. Looks line an old 8mm recording. I have never seen this on any other camera.
But, the main problem is the lens, couple of days ago I heard a "clunk", then the lens wouldn't retract fully. The camera displayed "Lens Error, restart camera". After about 6 attempts and another "clunk" the lens returned to normal. It hasn't lasted though, today the lens has just jammed out. Not good when you're in the middle of a snorkelling trip! This time it appears to be more drastic, the lens will not move more than 3mm.
So now I'm now in Fuerteventura, on holiday, with a £250 titanium paperweight.
I've contacted canon by email, no reply yet.
If you look on the net, you can see quite a few people have had similar problems with the newer Ixus cameras.

I hope this can be sorted as it's a great camera, when it's working!
The camera is a 5* piece of kit, but I can only give it 2* for breaking after 1 month.....

    4 out of 5 stars Various points..........2007-09-28

Well, firstly I ordered this to be delivered from Amazon by Freepost and it arrived 3 days later, quite superb. Now I see that there is a FREE camera case advertised with it, where's mine?
The camera is a lovely piece of engineering and a joy to hold. I have used it quite a bit mainly indoors and the results are so much better than I expected. Movie mode is puzzling as to the various modes but I am sure I will learn it all eventually. Which brings me on to the MANUAL supplied on CD but £12 to buy.... surely after paying £250 for a camera you should be entitled to a free manual. The basic manual included is not necessary as it is so easy to set up. But 250 pages of advanced manual should certainly be supplied by Canon.
It is my first Canon, having previously had Nikon, Pentax, Kodak and Samsung. The Canon certainly beats them all hands down on build and features. Let's see how it puts up with slipping in and out of my pockets and general wear & tear. So far the Samsung has been tops for reliability.

5 out of 5 stars Real Review !!.......2007-09-21

Sorry to have to rattle, but stupid comments like you can get a dslr for this money!!
    1. you would struggle to get dslr for £256 and 2. which dslr fits in your top pocket ?!!!

Now I've got that off my chest the 960 does fit in your top pocket very nicely. To look at the 960 is very well put together and feels solid. Lots of very nice shiny bits which unfortunately capture you finger prints. Start-up is very quick from switch on the camera is ready to shoot in under 2 seconds. Focusing speed is above average for this type of camera, but not the best I've ever seen. The zoom range is very usable for most general shooting applications. Picture quality is excellent for a pocket camera, in low light the noise is more than acceptable and gets even better if you use the scene settings appropriately. Skin tones are natural even using flash produces good tones.
The camera is packed with features, Face detect, and optical image stabilisation are newer features to the compact market and both work very well is this camera. It's the first time I've ever seen face detection actually helpful! Lots of cameras boast this feature but I tried Sony & Nikon models and not been very impressed with the results.
The menu access / access to settings is fairly easy although I'm not entirely impressed with the navigation, I cant quite put my finger on the problem I just feel it could be improved. There is a cleaver touch sensitive scroll wheel feature which I find a bit twitchy. But there are other ways to select the same thing so your not forced to use the scroll feature if you don't want.
    Best Bits.
Build quality, Good speed of operation, Excellent picture quality for compact digital. Digital zoom pictures are actually some use ( never thought I would say that ).
    Worst Bits.
Menus a bit fiddly, A little bigger that some others, Falls over easily so be very careful when you prop it on the telly for the timer shot of the family at Christmas.
    Overall.
Have done some extensive research on latest compacts and tested Sony Nikon and Canon, I usually shoot with DSLR and wanted a digital compact to carry round with me. I'm happy with my choice, all compact cameras are a compromise in one area or another but for me I feel the canon was the best all round.

          CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 12 Upgrade

          Amazon.co.uk Review

CorelDraw 12 consists of three programs: CorelDraw itself for vector graphics, Photo-Paint for bitmap painting and photo editing and RAVE for creating animations. As in previous versions, there are also utilities such as CorelTrace, for tracing bitmaps, and CorelCapture, for screen grabs. You might think that by the 12th iteration of a graphics application, there wouldn't be much new left to add. Corel is ingenious enough to have though up some very useful improvements, though, such as the SmartDrawing tool. Draw a freehand triangle with this tool and it becomes a real triangle, draw a rough ellipse and it becomes a perfect ellipse, draw a freeform squiggle and it becomes a beautifully curved squiggle.

If you need temporary guide lines to help align objects, CorelDraw 12 provides dynamic guides, which you can snap to and later delete when you've finished with them. Talking of snapping, you can snap an object to snap points in other objects, with the target point highlighting as you drag near to it. Symbols, introduced in CorelDraw 11, save space in Web design by taking as much file space as an object, no matter how many copies of them you create. Now you can build libraries of symbols to re-use in different drawings and distinguish them from objects by their blue handles. CorelDraw 12 can delete arbitrary segments from drawings with the Virtual Segment Delete tool and use the Eyedropper and Paintbucket together to transfer not just colour, but properties like transparency from one object to another.

The only real improvement to PhotoPaint is the addition of a Touch-Up brush, which helps remove blemishes like dust and scratches from scanned photographs. Like the other modules of the program though, PhotoPaint can optimise finished images for export to Microsoft Office or WordPerfect Office applications and now provides a separate Export command to save images in a wide range of different graphics formats. The improvements to RAVE, the animation module of the Suite, are pretty much the same as in CorelDraw. They include the SmartDrawing tool, dynamic guides, which can be used from frame to frame in an animation, symbols (and their animated equivalent, sprites) and virtual segment delete. --Simon Williams

          4 out of 5 stars Rock solid.......2006-02-13

I don't know how other people are having trouble with this software being buggy, its been rock-solid for me - never a single crash in several months of use. I find it competes well with anything I could do with Adobe software (that includes Photo-Paint) and has much less of the 'bloat-ware' effect, although I wouldn't try running it on anything under 1Ghz with 512Mb RAM

4 out of 5 stars About to be replaced.......2006-01-29

A great product, but a few weeks after I bought it Corel announced a new version. Hang on and wait to see if that would make a better upgrade choice.

5 out of 5 stars Classical Corel, powered by new great features.......2004-06-25

If you are fan of adobe photoshop, maybe you won't like it as much as I am. But Corel really did a great job with this version. It gives you full power of working with vector graphics. Features supplied on other 2 CDs are trully amazing.
It's good value for money, you get not only most powerful publishing software, but collection of registrered fonts - only this worth several hundred pounds. And plus the collection of images and clipat. And this is not just boring little images - this is full quality, full of life, high resolution stuff.
I would recommend it to anybody who is serious about computer graphics. Corel Masterpiece.

2 out of 5 stars not a very impressive upgrade.......2004-06-20

As upgrades go this is not very good. Very few new features have been added and most of them have limited use. To start with the smart drawing tools only recognises the most basic of shapes (circles, squares, rectangles, etc) which can be easily created by using the other tools coreldraw already offered. I'm not sure who will find this tool usefull as most coreldraw users will use coreldraw for far more complex tasks than this.
What is a much better conceived idea is the new dynamic guides, very usefull for technical illustrations which demand a high degree of accuracy.
As for Photopaint which was once a real contender against Photoshop, now it barely competes against paintshop pro. There is hardly any difference between version 12 and version 11, except for a third rate attempt at creating a tool similar too photoshop's healing brush.
Coreldraw is still a good product, but this upgrade is not worth forking out for if you already have version 10 or 11.

I bought this item around two weeks ago for my small business. I am very up to date with the latest computers but i did not feel that this package offered me anything special, exciting or new for the asking price. I experienced no complications and it was very smoothe when operating however i felt it was not the right package for me. Im sure it will benefit someone but it did not help me when trying to create logos for my business.

          Product Description

The 7.2 megapixel DMC-FX12 features a bright f/2.8 LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens with 3x optical zoom. The high quality Leica DC lens carries on the proud tradition of its famous Leica brand, the German camera maker renowned for lenses that combine superb performance with compact size. Comprising seven elements in six groups, including three lenses with three aspherical surfaces, this advanced lens unit matches Leica's stringent standards and delivers an exceptional optical performance. The zoom ratio can be extended up to 4.5x in 3 megapixel resolution mode with minimal deterioration thanks to the Extra Optical Zoom. By using the central part of the CCD, this powerful zooming function allows you to easily capture and magnify distant subjects. Jitter from handshake is far and away the biggest single cause of blurry shots. Lumix cameras help solve this problems with an advanced optical image stabilising system Panasonic's ingenious MEGA Optical Image Stabiliser (OIS). This system uses built-in gyrosensors to detect even tiny camera movement and then shifts a lens in the opposite direction to compensate, giving you sharp, clear images without deterioration. While hand-shake is the single biggest cause of blurry images, it is not the only one. Another problem is the motion blur that can occur when a subject moves as the shot is being taken, particularly common when taking pictures of sports or young children for example. In these conditions Intelligent ISO Control comes into its own. This system actually detects whether the subject is moving and, as necessary raises the ISO setting and shutter speed according to how fast the subject is moving and the light conditions. This happens automatically, so you can effortlessly shoot without the need to adjust the settings every time the conditions change.

          5 out of 5 stars Panasonic DMC-FX12EB-S Digital Camera.......2007-11-18

Upon first opening the box and looking at the camera, I began to feel pleased. There were little things about the 'build quality' that I liked. Little things, like the 'on' 'off' switch, which slid from side to side. The way that the memory card and battery door opened, and also of how the USB cable connected. All these little things were far superior to the way it was on the Sony Cybershot I'd just returned because it had malfunctioned within a month.

Confidence was beginning to be restored, and I began to click away! The camera is easy to use, but what about the quality of the pictures? I have taken many pictures of beautiful scenery on dull days, glowing night skies, items to sell on Ebay, and of course, my favourite people. I have not been disappointed and am really pleased with the results.

Before the disappointing Sony Cybershot which I returned, I had been using a Casio for 3 years, which gave good results, but this Panasonic Lumix Digital camera is a joy to use, with results that are always better than you would expect. Also the long life battery does not take long to recharge, which means that it is not essential to have a spare. The camera comes complete whith battery charger and all connection leads, etc.

I'm glad to say that we are very happy together!

5 out of 5 stars Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX12 Digital Camera.......2007-09-03

First thing that impresses you about this camera id the size. It's tiny and would comproftably into the back or shirt pocket.

Outdoor pictures are excellent. Anti-shake and mega optical stablisers really help when it's long exposure shots in darker places (it greatly helps in macro shots too).

It has neary 30 pre-set picture modoes for every occasion (i.e. starry night, night portraite, night scenery, scenery, portrait etc.)

It also has Baby1 Baby2 and Pet modes for you to inlcude their birthdays/ages on the pictures.

Holiday date allows you set date to start of your holiday and it can inlude the holiday days in the picture i.e. 1st day, 2nd day etc.

You can buy a marine case which will allow you to take this underwater and there is a mode for this too.

It takes 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9 pictures so that they can be displayed nicely on widescreen TVs.

The other nice touches is extra optical zoom. Depending on the picture quality you can increase the optical zoom to higher levels which will come handy if you need to zoom in further.

It comes with it's cahrger and batteries and they last fairly long time (quoted 300 snaps).

The video option is great as it takes better than DVD qulaity videos which is Quicktime (unlike motion-jpeg which is difficult to find editing software for) and also camera can include short audio messages to still pictures.

Chromatic abberations and other optical problems dosn't seem to affect this camera which is a big bonus.

All in all a tremendeously competent and delightful compact digital camera.

          Recommended.
