Easy to use but let down by poor sound quality .......2006-11-24
I chose the Pure radio for its neat design and ease of use. I liked the way that you just switch it on and it tunes its self and displays information on available stations. For speech the radio sounds good but for music I am very disappointed hence only two stars.
Mainstream listeners won't go wrong with this.......2006-04-29
Hardcore audiophiles might prefer a unit with optical connections etc, while gadget freaks will want a pause button and an SD-card slot. Early-risers might demand a clock-radio facility. For the rest of us, this does very nicely indeed.
The DAB side of things is a doddle to use -- just switch it on and it tunes itself in, after which you're only a few keypresses away from the desired station. There are eight presets, accessed through four numbered buttons and a shift button. Tuning and preset information is retained even if you don't install batteries -- I switched it off at the mains overnight and the setup was still there the next morning. Sound quality is very good. The unit will, of course, burble with the best of them if not given an adequate signal, but in my stone-walled cottage I don't even need to extend the telescopic aerial.
FM performance is competent, if marred by somewhat fiddly tuning -- the autoscan stops every time it hears a consistent crackle, meaning it's easier to use manual tuning. I ended up reading the desired frequency off another radio. Fortunately, with 8 non-volatile presets also available for FM, re-tuning shouldn't be a frequent event. As seems usual with small radios, FM is much clearer when you switch it to mono.
The case has a nice brushed metallic finish, and should appeal to those who think those retro wooden box affairs are already looking ... retro. One small gripe here is that the handle doesn't fold away fully into the back of the unit, but to be fair, because of the way the case is sculpted, the handle would have to rotate almost through 180 degrees to disappear completely.
All in all, it's hard to find a reason not to recommend this to anyone looking for a stylish, basic DAB radio.
Excelent value and quality.......2006-02-09
This radio is great value for money. It can get the best signal on DAB. The tone quality is very good and really easy to use. Excelent value for money and a great entry into the whole digital world of radio.
Easy DAB for electro idiots.......2006-01-22
This radio was bought as a gift, from Amazon, for me and I have to say I am delighted with it. It is sleek, light and an absolute pleasure to have on display. There are no dust collecting buttons, as found on so many electronic items, just wonderfully smooth easy touch ones. It comes with an amazingly short, simple and easy to follow, well illustrated, instruction manual. I was listening to new, now favourite, stations in a matter of minutes. If you are looking for a huge range of stations please bear in mind it will only offer DAB stations so for Radio Outer Mongolia you may need to stick to that horrid, black, bulky, dust covered radio you hide in the corner of the office/kitchen. This is for displaying, the chaps at PURE have done us proud! This is DAB for techno-phobes who want something that looks like a work of art. Brilliant!
Excellent radio.......2006-01-04
A lot of digital radios appear old-fashioned in design - I wanted one that is contemporary, and good quality. Pure seemed the best from all the reviews I could find, and I'm really pleased.
Having both DAB and FM tuners is great.
The LCD display can show rolling text for each station, such as show details and email details - excellent value for money, and this comes highly recommended.

Ideal radio for your mum!.......2007-05-02
I bought one of these as a 74th birthday present for my mum. She loves it. It is simple to use (as it only has 5 presets - no shift button) and the sound quality is excellent. If ever there was a product aimed at someone who doesn't want lots of bells and whistles (and there's a lot of them about), this is it.
Great but don't expect much when running on batteries.......2006-11-19
We got this as a gift a while back and it is a great product, easily as good as the non-portable units that we have in many respects. However the battery life is very limited and you need a lot of them. If you're used to thinking that your FM radio is powered by magic because it never seems to need new batteries then this radio is very different. I was using 2400Ah NiMh AAs with converters to bring them up to C size and only got a few hours at most. We had thought that this would have been ideal for camping trips, but if you don't want to be charging batteries every day seek something else if you wanted it for something similar.
Best sound for the pound.......2006-01-24
We tried a number of DAB radios in the £50-00 to £80-00 region. This gave by far the best sound quality and is, without question, well built. It seems that Pure do rule the roost in DAB radio - well worth the money. I think it might be about to be discontinued - but whatever Pure replace it with will certainly be worth looking at.
Decent entry level DAB radio.......2005-07-30
I've had mine for about a year. I also have a DAB tuner on my Sony hifi and a Roberts DAB radio alarm clock. Of the three the Elan has the lowest sound quality, least features and the least presets. But having said that, it is a good radio for the kitchen and for travel. I can't comment on battery life as haven't used it with batteries. Overall if you want to try DAB radio for the first time, you won't be dissapointed, this is good value for money.

Buy this one!.......2008-01-04
I have owned the DX40's predecessor, the Elan, for a couple of years now and cannot fault it's performance, so when I decided to buy a second DAB radio, this was the obvious choice. It looks good (no retro wood or cheap looking plastic)and has a small footprint. The only slight problem with the older model was poor life of rechargeable batteries (I have now modified the radio so it automatically charges when plugged into the mains).
The new model is even better, with more features and a chargepak unit available (though at around £30 it's a bit steep...)
If you are looking for a reliable, sensibly priced quality DAB radio which can be run off the mains and batteries then buy this one!
