I bought this after returning a faulty Intempo Digital TRS-01, what a contrast, the Pure One is easy to set up, easy to select stations, plenty of features, very good sound quality and is able to receive lots more stations. Well worth paying a little bit more for.

5 out of 5 stars They won't be getting this returned.......2008-01-16

It is a great little product, so easy to use. The hardest part was getting it out of the box, then I deliberately put it in the worst part of the house for recieving signal for everything including mobile phones.
On turning on it found all available DAB stations in my area and plays them clearly.
With few controls it is so easy to use and the preset facility lets me put in a mix of both DAB and my local stations on FM without having to switch between bands.
During the recent bad weather when our fancy Philips DAB Micro Hi-Fi was unable to get a signal this was coming through clear as a bell.
Unless you want a DAB unit as part of a Hi-Fi or the more expesive ones with rewind/pause facility do not hesitate or bother with other makes, go for the Pure One.
You cannot beat it for value for money and clarity of the reception.

5 out of 5 stars Great Radio! buy ONE now!.......2008-01-13

This radio is great! its build quality is really good, the sound quality is good, the best thing about this radio is its ease of use and looks, it look great where ever it is!

The packaging is lso good beacuse it is all recyclable, and there is none of that annoying polostyrine to get rid of, especially these days with pollution and the country trying its best to clamp down on rubbish.

My overall reviews:
Build Quality: 5/5
Sound Quality 4/5
Looks/Style: 5/5
Ease of Use: 5/5

I would recommend this radio to anyone, and it proves you dont have to spend a fortune to "go digital" and have better sound quality radio.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2008-01-08

Like most of the reviews this product is brilliant for the price. So easy to set up and excellent reception. Easy to use and well worth the money. Have another DAB radio which cost alot more and this one is equally as good.

This is a simply amazing bit of Kit, very impressed it is easy to use and the sound from its speaker is brilliant it is loud and very clear although I assume the DAB helps this.

I bought the black one and I recommend this if you are looking for a cheap DAB radio.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent DAB radio at an excellent price.......2007-12-31

I've just purchased one of these for the kitchen and am really pleased with it. First impressions are good - the radio feels sturdy and the retro white plastic look quite stylish - or at least I think it is! The instruction manual is clear enough, although to be honest, after a cursory glance, I just plugged the thing in to the mains. After a quick question from it (on the screen) about power saving, the One happily searched for all available DAB channels and came up with 30, which according to the DAB website is what I would expect to receive where I live. I decided to push the telescopic aerial down to see if this made any difference either to the signal strength or quality,(easy to check using the info-display menu and there's also a signal strength indicator on the main screen) and it didn't which means that I don't need that big metal stick intruding on my worktop!
The sound quality from the radio is good and it goes quite loud - it isn't stereo, although it can receive in stereo, and I have tried hooking it up to my speakers which I use with my MP3, and the sound quality is then amazing. You haven't got options on the radio to change things like bass, treble etc, so if those are the kind of knobs you like to twiddle, you'll need to look elsewhere. However, for me, volume alone is sufficient, and there is an indicator on the main screen of how far up the volume scale you are.
It's easy to navigate through the channels - just press the little button marked 'stations' then turn the silver knob to scroll through what's on offer. Press the knob in when you've found the station you want. You can preset favourite stations if you want, although to be honest, I haven't bothered because it's easy peasy just to scroll through everything on offer.
Other useful features include a kitchen timer (works when the radio is on) and a sleep timer which are fairly easy to set. The screen will also display a digital clock when the radio is switched off but still connected to a power supply. You can't set this - it's set by the most recent DAB channel you've been listening to, but I haven't had any issues with its accuracy so far.
I only plan to use this radio with the mains which is probably a good thing as I've heard these things eat batteries, and the power pack you can buy to go with it is quite pricey.
This is a solid DAB radio, with good sound, from a reputable manufacturer at a very good price, and as such, I would recommend this item for use in a kitchen or bedroom.

5 out of 5 stars It's eco-friendly too!.......2007-12-15

A fab looking, good value, good quality radio that is also guilt free! I checked it out on the PURE website and discovered that this radio is part of an EcoPlus product range, made from recycled and sustainable materials and it uses less power than conventional DAB radios. This is certainly something that sets it apart from other DAB's - a great christmas gift for any greenies!

4 out of 5 stars cracking little radio for the price.......2007-12-05

Excellent little DAB radio

This really is a cracking little radio for the price. Many people have grown accustomed to DAB radios costing a hundred pounds and upwards so to see their price coming down recently it's reassuring to see that the quality has stayed as high as it was.

Having moved to an area where FM reception was virtually non existent we decided to supplement our (admittedly very nice but also very expensive) roberts DAB with another couple of DABs for the house. The Pure One is definitely the best of those new radios. The case looks a bit plastic but on the whole it's an unobtrusive piece of kit and just sits there doing its job. It found all the major stations and a whole range of minor stations, certainly far more than we could ever find on FM, and if you still can't find what you want then FM is available.

Some of the features seem a bit silly. For example the preset station is almost as cumbersome as selecting the station without the presets. To select a station without the presets press 'station' and turn the main dial to your station. To use the presets press 'preset' and turn the main dial to your station. But with 20 presets that's as long winded as the non preset method! It has a kitchen timer built in for no readily apparent reason that I can see. It has a sleep timer which is sort of useful I suppose but wouldn't it be a good idea to put in a wake up timer as well? the radio knows the time so would it be so hard to do?It also has the ability should you really want it to be able to update the radio's software, though I can't really see anyone being desperately worried about doing that. If they really wanted to add features then why not pause and rewind? But then again it is a cheap DAB radio and the extras that are there even if not that useful don't stop it doing what it needs to do.

All in all a cracking little radio for the money. Remarkably good sound quality for a little box, unobtrusive and very usable.

1 out of 5 stars main objective.......2007-11-22

We purchased this to use when we are camping, so its priority was to work on batteries. The manufacturers boast that it would work for up to 35 hours needs examining by the Office of Fair Trading!! After numerous attempts we find that the average life for 6 C batteries is just over 5 hours!!!!! We have resorted to dusting off our old portable which gives far superior sound after 6 hours play! As we had lots of trouble with an earlier Pure DAB radio, we definitely can not recommend them!!

5 out of 5 stars Pure one - remarkable little classic.......2007-11-10

Expected a fairly ordinary mono radio despite all the ecstatic reviews everywhere. I was wrong, this is superbly designed - electronically, built quality and usability. Sound quality is a revelation and really quite exceptional at this price. With it's excellent LCD display the ONE is amazingly inexpensive, but not at all cheap. Looks really stylish in white in the kitchen and bathroom. The user interface is so well designed too and is a joy to use. A super alternative if - like me - you don't like the old fashioned looking Pure Evoke products. Don't forget that although the radio is mono, the headphone output is stereo so you can feed it into a hi-fi system.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Finaly sleeping in the dark!.......2008-01-15

I thought it would be impossible to find, but Pure Chronos II is the one! You can choose manual or auto dimmer and it really works! The alarm is so easy to set up (and you can set up up to 4 different ones - weekday/weekend/one off...). You don't have to be woken up by the same station you listened last time or your second half was woken up by. You can choose DAB or FM (should you be in a very bad DAB reception area like I am!). Very stylish and there is an easy to access input for earphones too. It is a bit expensive but well worth it. A must have.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Chronos II.......2008-01-11

A well specified good quality easy to use unit at a reasonable price best describes the Chronos II.
Setup is very quick with an easy to follow user manual.
Sound quality is good for a unit of this size and the addition of an FM band is handy in areas of poor / intermittent DAB signal.
This unit is also one of the few DAB radios to be upgradeable to DAB+ so its ready for the future.
The only drawback with this unit is that it has no provision for battery operation but then it is intended as a bedside radio alarm clock not a portable . I am very pleased with the unit and would recommend.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Little Alarm Clock.......2008-01-03

I received the Chronos II for Christmas as a replacement for my old AM/FM radio alarm-clock, and have been extremely impressed with the product.

THE PROS:

- The triangular "Toblerone" shape means the clock radio occupies the minimum amount of space on a bedside table. The buttons are clear and easy to find, and build quality is also very good.
- The DAB reception is crystal clear and, unlike my old FM radio, it does not "drift" between radio stations over time.
- For a small clock radio, the sound quality is good (however it is not a replacement for a HiFi system).
- The clock always shows the correct time, as it automatically syncs with the time broadcast via DAB.
- You can set four different alarms with individual settings, including weekdays-only, weekends-only, etc. No more waking up at 6am on a Saturday!!
- It has an adjustable Snooze timer (why are snooze timers normally 9 minutes?)
- There is an automatic dimmer, plus High and Low manual settings for the display
- You can customise radio alarm volume settings
- There is a neat headphone socket tucked in the top rear corner of the unit, which avoids the need to fumble with cables around the back of the clock.

THE CONS:

- If I was being ultra-picky, the display is a little bit on the small side, meaning that it is a bit difficult to read the time from a distance (e.g. >4m).

CONCLUSION:

I think this is a great product, and I would highly recommend it if you are looking for a DAB clock radio.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-12-18

Looks good, sounds good ... BUT ... I bought it as a bedside radio-alarm and it is a pain to use at night, especially if you are short sighted. Hard to change preset channels (six buttons to press), hard to turn it on for 30 mins in the middle of the night, nightmare to set the alarm, poor display of the time etc etc.

Have religated it to another room for daytime use and gone back to my non-DAB Sony. Sony know how to design a bedside radio-alarm. I will wait for them to produce a DAB one.

3 out of 5 stars The best but not very good..........2007-12-14

I was drawn to Pure's product range because as a manufacturer they seem to value good design, and have a very pretty product range. I take my hat off to them for applying some eco-design to their range, cutting power consumption to a level that shames other manufacturers. And make no mistake, this is one of the best clock radios money can buy, but in a marketplace crowded with ghastly competitors, that's not as high an accolade as it should be. Here are some details...

The sound quality is perfectly adequate for a clock radio. If you want better, plug it into an amp; room-filling stereo is not what it's for.

The display is apparently 'improved' over the first Chronos... viewing from the front it looks great, but from above, it's inverted, and somewhere between the two it's completely invisible. For a radio designed to live on a low bedside table, that's inexcusable.

The auto-dimming feature is an excellent idea, but if I face the radio when I'm in bed, in a dark room I can feel the light in my face even with my eyes closed. It's still far too bright.

The software is much the same as any other digital radio. There are menus, you can display various information on the screen, but at the expense of the time display, which for a clock radio is a shame. Text scrolls painfully slowly across the screen. It's possible to make the radio do pretty much anything you'd want, although not always as easily or intuitively as you might hope. The bewildering number of buttons isn't conducive to controlling the radio while half asleep or when you can't see the top of it.

Other design niggles include the steps in volume level being slightly too far apart, and the 4 that looks like a 9 in big clock mode.

Pure seem to be the ones setting the standards where digital radios are concerned. It's just a shame they're not setting them very high.

... buy the Bush PSDAB2004 Personal DAB Radio, which seems to be exactly the same radio but in a plastic casing instead of metal, at almost half the price. The other difference is that this one comes with a rechargeable battery pack and adapter to charge it and the Bush operates with disposable batteries - but rechargeables can be used. Oh, and this Radio comes with Sennheisser headphones.

Both this radio and the Bush work fine, with good reception (many stations - I live in the SE) and sound.

1 out of 5 stars Another very disappointed buyer...........2008-01-08

I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my partner. He tried it out on Christmas day only to establish that there was absolutely no reception. On top of this, I was extremely disappointed with the quality of this radio. It looked and felt cheap - the control buttons looked as though they wouldn't stand a lot of use before losing their functionality. No reception....absolutely no use! I give this product 2/10 and that's being generous! Apologies to anyone out there who has had a better experience using this product.

1 out of 5 stars Not very impressed...........................2008-01-03

I've had the Pure PocketDAB 1500 for 6 months now but for most of that time it's been left in a drawer. The whole DAB experience has been very dissapointing. Don't believe the hype.

I do a lot of walking in my job and I thought a DAB radio would give me a choice of stations on the move. I checked DAB coverage in my area ( I live in Leeds ) and it was supposed to be no problem. In reality the unit works well in my house and up to 7 miles South. Any other direction, more than 0.5 mile and all DAB coverage is lost! Forget about the FM tuner because it's useless. Reception is so poor that it's not worth listening.

The problem I have with this, is that it's not really portable. Move about with it and if you manage to keep a DAB signal, there's really annoying interference which sounds like a Jacuzzi bubbling in the background. I've tried listening on car journeys, on the train and in even upstairs on the bus but it can't get a DAB signal at anything above walking pace, it just goes off!

My other bugbear is that although there seem to be many DAB stations to choose from, ( about 50 on the menu ) half are stations already available on FM. Take away the Christian and Muslim stations and your left with less than 10 stations. As with all commercial radio in this country they are mostly owned by two big media groups GCap and Emap so there's very little originality. I think internet radio is the way forward because it bypasses the big corporations and their agendas, giving the listening audience more choice and more original independent content. Just to rub salt in the wound, I thought BBC7 was all comedy, turns out it's CBeebies most of the time......

Battery life isn't a problem, I've never kept a useable signal for more than 20 minutes.

My point is, that there's little point in putting a DAB radio in your pocket if you have to stand still to listen to it. That's why mine lives in the kitchen drawer. I'm hoping that this is technology ahead of its time and that I haven't wasted my money!

1 out of 5 stars Be afraid, be very afraid.......2007-12-31

I got tired of listening to my MP3 player down the gym - after a couple of years you end up listening to th same stuff .. so, I thought, what better than a radio to let me listen to new stuff all the time, what better than dab for its crystal clear quality and different channels.

What I owuld say to you is, this is probably a fantastic radio but it didnt work out for me. I checked the reviews which virtualy all say its fantastic and I checked the ocverage for my area. Now, here's the bit you should read

My area sayd I shuould get about 16 stations and May get andother dozen. The stations I wanted were in that dozen.

If you are going to buy DAB at all, check the coverage in your area - if it says you "MAY" get coverage, presume that you wont - only believe you will if it says you definitely will.

Also, even though I get the stations promised, if I go inside (in a shopping centre for example, then I get NO coverage - just thought you should be aware of that.

I thought, "fair enough, I can use FM" - you would not believe how appalling the FM is on this radio - very very "shooshy" - a bit like the tiny handheld radios you used to buy 30 years ago - its so bad I'd suggest that you just ignore the fact it has FM.

What I would say is that hwne I was in the street in Central London I got prefect receiption on 54 stations, including all the ones I wanted ..... When I traveeled about a mile and went outside, this number dropped to 24 stations.

So, what am I saying to you ? I'm reviewing this radio as this is the one I bought - I get about 12 hours battery life (not the 24 promised) but thats fine - in an area where you are meant to get reception the sound is crystal clear and the unit is easy to operate.

However, if you've never gone the DAB route before I would suggest you see if a friend has a radio you can borrow to check actual coverage in your area or you may be disappointed, not with the product you buy but with the whole DAB experience.

I hope this review helps someone.

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing DAB reception in spite of very good area.......2007-12-28

I bought this DAB radio to complement the others we already own, and for my husband to use when he is on dialysis, because he likes to listen to Planet Rock, amongst others. We are in a very good area for DAB reception (South of England), and already own three other sets, which all work consistently well, and pick up loads of stations, so we are more than used to tuning them in. Knowing Pure's reputation in the market, we were amazed at the limitations of the DAB signal, it picked up about ten stations, and couldn't even get Radio 2, let alone Planet Rock. We tried it outside, and all around the house, and it fared no better. The sound was very good when tuned in, and its a nice compact unit, and looks well made, but overall we are very disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars XDR-M1: Putting the C in Rap.......2007-12-11

What can I say? I looked long and hard at the reviews for this and others. The Sony won as it had FM reception. Bad move. I live and work in very good DAB and VHF reception areas. FM is terrible, both on local and distant transmissions. DAB is great if your still and have no intention of moving! So forget portable, that it ain't.
Result: given it away to some to use in their office and will wait till there's something better.

Stay clear is my opinion.

1 out of 5 stars Sony DAB protable radio.......2007-07-16

Very poor product. I expect better from Sony, I have found it basically no use in most locations, although I have other digital radios that work. Should have really sent it back !

1 out of 5 stars Possibly the worst Sony product in the world..........2007-06-14

Despite normally loving (and owning) many Sony products this one is one I Wish I had not bought. My gripes are as follows:
The reception is awful, it drops signal frequently even when cycling in central London. As for on a train...forget it!

It does not come with a case.

I often have to re-program the Fav's.

All in all, don't buy it. I wish I had returned it to Amazon within the time limits.

4 out of 5 stars Good as a DAB radio.......2007-03-27

I wanted a portable radio with less hiss than you get on FM, and I got it. It has faster station-changing than the 2 other digital radios I have. When you have good reception the sound quality is excellent. Doesn't work on the train when moving above about 30 mph though! Not sure about battery life, but it does come with an AC adaptor.

5 out of 5 stars Great peice of kit!!.......2007-01-17

This is a really nice DAB radio although its quite a chunky shape it still small and fits into your pocket fine. It looks fantastic, its goes really load, probably loader than you would ever want.

The reception is fantastic. I live in the centre of sheffield and it picks up loads of stations and never shows any signs of loss of reception and you can set up all of your favorites easy. I would definantley recommend this radio.

The only problem is the screen is pretty dark when indoors. There is a light but you can't set it up so it comes on when your pressing buttons like you can on a mobile: you have to keep pressing the light button in able to see the screen but other than that little niggle it works great. Overall i would probably give it 9/10.

2 out of 5 stars Poorly made, poor sound, poor customer service.......2008-01-16

2 stars for a good ipod interface and easy to use setup.

3 stars off for poor build quality (mine had the high pitch whining noise), poor sound (don't try to play anything with a bassline) and poor customer service (despite this being "unfortunately" a known fault, I got no apology and was made to feel like I was splitting hairs for bringing it up).

    Mine's gone back.

    4 out of 5 stars Pure idock.......2008-01-14

I compared this to the intempo and this is much better than the latter. The features are fantastic (especially the ipod functionality), it is very user-friendly and it is a great size (much smaller than the pics suggest). Everyone goes on about the sleek look of the intempo but I think this one actually looks cooler. The only downsides are a slight buzz at very low volumes (it's fine though) and the fact that you can't use the remote to go through your presets, but they are far outweighed by the upsides.

I am very happy with it and I am pretty fussy about these things.

4 out of 5 stars Great Alarm Functions, Good sound, and time thats stays on!.......2008-01-14

It came down to a choice between the In-Tempo and this.
Having read the reviews on here and elsewhere I decided that the two issues with the In-Tempo, time light and loud alarm volume, were ones I couldn't live with.
I went for the iDock and I am very pleased. The functionality of the alarm is ideal. The DAB crystal clear and the ipod docking great.
You can set one of four alarms, each with their own preset, volume and source.
The sleep button is excellent with the lowest volume on the unit ideal for dead of night listening whilst you drop off.
If you want a sound dock probably then there are better ones around but if you main driver is the alarm function with DAB and IDock then this is recommended.
The sound quality so far for me is very good, its a bedroom unit after all

3 out of 5 stars Pure Idock Review.......2008-01-03

    Good Points:
    - compact and looks good (in my opinion) on a bed side table.
    - great alarm functions, all four of them.
    - DAB features work really well.
    - easy to control ipod (and charges it up as well).
    - low energy usage in operation and standby.
    - clock automatically dims when lights turned off.

    Bad Points:
    - sound is okay but not great, there is a lack of clarity and bass with distortion at higher volumes. (UPDATE: turn off the DRC to improve sound quality - this would be worth another half star)
    - not cheap for what is basically a bed side radio.

In general I am happy with it as it does what it says on the tin and is also supposed to be good for the environment. Just don't expect Bose sound quality. To see what it looks like in action go to youtube and put pure and idock into the search box.

3 out of 5 stars Good alarm clock but don't expect dolby surround sound.......2008-01-01

On the plus side this product has an excellent spec and looks good. The price is competitive and the delivery/service was superb especially considering my order was at the end of December purchase. My only complaint is that the sound quality is pretty average. It's ok for a bedside alarm clock but don't expect to be woken with a room full of sound.

5 out of 5 stars Great Little Performer!.......2008-01-16

I was fedup when my favourite DJ on 6music was relegated to the grave-yard shift so decided I needed a DAB for the bedroom. I'd already got a Pure DAB in kitchen so know that quaity is good.
1st impression was, "It's so small!" [the Siesta was replacing a Multi-band Communications Receiver.] "it's gonna sound tinny"
Needn't have worried, sound is fab from such a little box.
Display is exactly right, I use reading glasses but this is easy to read at night without. Auto-dimming works fine.
3 alarm modes, weekdays[mon-fri],weekends and every day.
Time setting is automatic, from DAB.
The sleep setting is a doddle too, from 15 to 90mins in 15 minute sections.
Here's a clever trick though, if I go to sleep with Gideon Coe on DAB I wake up to Radio4 Today prog! You can asign either DAB or FM on the alarm so you don't have to wake up with same station.
All in all, a great little radio. I love it!

5 out of 5 stars Lovely little device.......2008-01-09

Having had one of the original PURE DAB radios for several years now, I was pleasantly suprised to get the same quality of sound and ease of use that this clock radio provides.

The set-up was easy and the options are more than sufficient for a bedside radio-alarm.

I happily recommend you buying this item.

4 out of 5 stars A compact stylish DAB alarm clock.......2008-01-09

I originally bought the iDock by Pure as an alarm/DAB/ipod dock which is a good idea on paper but not so good in practice. The sound quality just wasn't good enough for a ipod dock and the unit was not exactly cheap. So I returned it and bought the Siesta instead. Despite being half the price and only having one speaker this has pretty similar sound quality to the iDock which excels at speech i.e. radio four et al but don't expect to use it for house parties or impressing audiophiles. That said I do find my self listening to it quite a lot.

    Good points
    - pleasant sound particularly good for speech but not obviously a hifi replacement
    - automatic set up: just plug it in, give it a minute and you are up and running
    - very simple to use in fact you can ignore the manual
    - DAB is well implemented and gives you lots to play with (it is great to come into a programme half way and see on the screen what it is all about)
    - a USB port means this is future proof so no need to worry when DAB changes
    - it is environmentally friendly using low power standby and recycled materials
    - the display is light sensitive and dims nicely when you turn off the lights
    - it is a really good looking, compact alarm clock that is the best looking I have seen
    - alarm functions are good but...

    Bad points
    - ...you can't set the station you want to wake up to. This means if you are listening to say Radio 3 in the evening but like to wake up to Radio 4 you need to remember to set the station. Whilst this isn't going to be a problem for most people it is frustrating not to have this option. However the unit can be upgraded by usb so if you do buy one please contact Pure and ask them to issue an update.

In my opinion this is a great DAB alarm clock at a reasonable price. Having listened to quite a few Pure radios I recommend the Siesta over the iDock or the single speaker models as it has a very similar sound, smaller size and more reasonable price tag.

5 out of 5 stars Great digital alarm clock.......2008-01-02

It's so easy to use, the instructions are easy and it works really well. You just plug it in, press select a couple of times and the time will automatically set. Instead of getting woken up in the morning with an annoying beep I get woken up with the good digital radio. It's easy to change radio station and it shows you the name of the radio station and you still have FM radio. The signals good and the stations are great!

3 out of 5 stars GOOD LOOKER BUT PROBLEM WITH THE LIGHT.......2008-01-02

This is a recent acquisition as I was looking for a DAB clock radio for the bedroom. The Siesta is reasonably compact and, as usual for Pure, looks the part.

However, after only a couple of days I appear to have a problem with the auto-dimming on my unit. The first couple of days it was really good at night, although the numbers weren't the easiest to see the overall 'glow' was quite dim and very much to my liking; recently the unit doesn't appear to dim at night, emitting quite a strong light the reaches across the whole bedroom! I thought I'd got over this problem (expercienced with other clock radios) by getting the Siesta; now it appears I may have a faulty unit and I will have to take this up with the manufacturer. Not a good start. It amazes me why manufacturers cannot address this basic requirement - why not install a dial so that people can adjust the night-light to their own preference (as in a car dash) - such a simple solution!

Other than that the sound quality is pretty good and the reception in my area is excellent. I would probably have given the Siesta 4 (the instructions can appear a little complicated to give it 5) but for the fact I may have a faulty unit.

      Pure Evoke-1 DAB Radio

      Amazon.co.uk Review

The Pure Evoke-1 DAB radio from PURE Digital delivers crystal-clear digital audio along with all the benefits that DAB radio has to offer including fast auto-tuning and 2-line LCD display.

The first thing you notice about the Evoke-1 is how well-built it is. The stylish Maplewood casing with pearlescent white and silver facia is very sturdy and designed to take a few knocks. Although the Evoke-1 looks like a portable radio, it is powered by a mains adapter and features stereo line-out, headphones and external speaker sockets in the back of the unit.

Setting up the radio is so easy, a child could do it. When you first turn on the radio, the player will automatically tune in to any available stations. The Evoke-1 features a green backlit two-line LCD display on the front of the unit which displays the station name as well as additional information sent from the radio station such as current track info and contact details. Selecting a station is very easy, simply turn the tune dial until the station you want appears by name on the screen and then press the tune dial. The six preset buttons come in handy as it can save time switching between favourite stations. The LCD display is used for displaying station frequency details and the date and time. The only bad thing about the LCD screen is that the viewing angle is very small and so is best viewed face-on.

Where DAB radio excels over conventional AM/FM radios is in the quality of the audio, and the Evoke-1 doesn't disappoint. When the signal strength is good, the sound is brilliant. We found that the signal strength varied depending on where we placed the unit--the higher in the house the radio was placed, the better the signal strength. When the signal strength was low, there is some audio distortion--but this is no fault of the radio. The telescopic antenna can be easily removed and replaced with a more powerful external aerial if you find the signal strength too weak in your area.

The Pure Evoke-1 is a great radio that sounds as good as it looks. The sound output from the internal speaker is superb, and the lack of a second speaker isn't really an issue as the audio-out capabilities enable it to be plugged directly into an external amplifier or hi-fi. Whether you use it in the kitchen, in the study or on your desk as work, the Pure Evoke-1 is a top-quality product that really shows off the benefits of DAB radio. --Martin Snelling

      5 out of 5 stars Pure Evoke - 1 DAB Radio.......2007-11-30

Bought my first Pure radio, reconditioned, for £40 to put in our holiday cottage. Never made it to the cottage!

I fell in love with it as soon as I opened the packaging and started listening. Very easy to use, very impressive sound.

Have today ordered two more - one for my Mother and another one for the holiday cottage.

      5 out of 5 stars Pur Evoke-1 DAB Radio.......2006-01-29

This is a truly excellent radio. I was given one as a gift some time ago, & it is really a pleasure both to use & to listen to.
The sound quality is amazing, for such a small unit. I have also purchased an extension speaker for mine, so as to get true stereo sound. It plays virtually all day long, every day in our house. The build quality is also excellent, & people comment on its good looks & contempory styling. If you're thinking of buying a DAB radio, get one of these. You couldn't find better.

5 out of 5 stars Just Get One............2004-12-29

I have no hesitation in recommending this to anyone - just trying to come up with a good enough reason to justify getting another one....maybe if I 'accidently' drop the radio in the bedroom......!

Great sound - easy to use - great build quality.

      4 out of 5 stars Worth lt!.......2004-12-08

I spent a while researching and choosing a digital radio, and this was the one I eventually plumped for. I'm glad I did. The Evoke is really a no frills base model DAB receiver which has the emphasis placed firmly towards quality rather than gimics. The sound reproduction is excellent for its size and the build quality superb. The knobs turn with the smoothness of any Roberts radio and the layout, design and operation are all logical and well thought out, and the unit is reassuringly heavy and sturdy.

The down side... well it's only mains powered so I'm not sure it counts as a true "portable", and personally I would like to have had a dimmer on the display (which tends to light the whole room up at night), but that's about it really.

The Evoke was one of the first in the market and it is now available in a variety of packages (you can get versions with additional speakers, different finishes and alarm clocks added etc etc), and with a bit of shopping around you can find some very competitive deals now. Whichever way you cut it you will be able to find cheaper DAB receivers, and ones with more features for the money, but for me... I'll stick with the Evoke any day!

      5 out of 5 stars Evoke 1 - A Joy to Own.......2004-03-11

I have owned my Evoke 1 for a considerable time now. I always wanted a stylish radio for my home office and decided that when DAB became available at a reasonable price then that was the way to go.

Originally it took me months to track one down, but wow, was it worth the wait!

The Evoke scores full marks in both form and function. Easy to set up, easy to use, excellent quality sound, very easy on the eye and a joy to use. Tuning is simple and easy and all the controls have a quality feel about them.

A few reviewers have commented about the lack of portability. This is only a down side if you need it to be truly portable.
If I am working in another room for a few hours I am happy to take the mains adapter and plug it in there - No more hassle than having to change the batteries regularly and much cheaper. I have not qualms about the fact that my Evoke will not run on batteries.

A number of reviews also say that they have not / will not bother with the extra speaker. Well, I would say, think again! I had mine for a few months before getting the extra speaker & I believe that it is an excellent addition, with great quality stereo imaging. Obviously if you can plug your Evoke into your hi-fi then don't bother with the extra speaker, but if you use it regularly where you don't have a full hi-fi system, then it is money well spent.

So, is there any bad news? Well, I am struggling to find any but would agree with a comment made elsewhere.....I have mine on my desk, which means I look down on the display, which makes it a little difficult to read! OK, no big problem, but that is how good the Evoke is.

Conclusion - If you are reading this you are interested in an Evoke, don't read any more, go ahead and buy one. You will not be disapointed.
