5 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for.......2003-11-11

As I travel a lot and like to listen to world service I was looking for a small portable radio, with a built in alarm clock but which also received short wave. Thats easier said than done as radios seem to have gone out of fashion and everyone seems to sell gadgets with too many features. This radio fitted my requirements perfectly, its lightweight, tiny, folds in 2 so is more resistant to falling on the floor, has a little snooze light so you can check the time in the dark and gets excellent short wave reception. You don't even have to change the time as you tell it the time zone and the time adujsts automatically.

What I really liked is that everything is manual, no annoying electronic features that take you 4 hours reading the manual. The sound quality is also very good for such a small device and certainly sufficent for world service, though probably not for someone who really wants to focus on music. I bought this for a studying holiday in Rome and it really served its purpose of allowing me to listen to the local radio and foreign stations, it now travels with me everywhere. The only negative point I can think of is that the noise of the alarm is very irritating but then perhaps its supposed to be.

Sony ICF-SW7600GR World Radio

Product Description

The Sony ICF-SW7600GR is a compact, dual conversion, microprocessor-controlled, frequency synthesized general coverage portable receiver. Direct access tuning is provided along with a multifunction LCD digital readout for unsurpassed convenience and accuracy (1 kHz step tuning on longwave, medium wave and shortwave). Just press the numbered keys to match the frequency you want to hear. Manual and automatic scan tuning plus memory scanning is provided. 100 memories are featured for your favorite stations. These memories are non-volatile and therefore will not be lost during the changing of batteries. The ICF-SW7600GR tunes from 150 to 29999 kHz for solid coverage of longwave, medium wave and shortwave. Smooth Single Sideband (SSB) and Morse code reception is available through a switch with separate LSB and USB positions plus fine tuning thumb-wheel. A special Synchronous Detector circuit reduces fading and annoying "beat" frequency interference from adjacent stations as well as distortion due to fading shortwave reception. FM stereo (87.6 - 108 MHz in 50 kHz steps) is provided to the mini stereo headphone jack. A record output jack is included for taping off the air. Advanced features include: dial light, continuously, variable attenuator, 9/10 kHz MW step, "Tune" indicator, keypad lock, 1/5 kHz step tuning, flip-stand, tone switch and external antenna jack. There is also a Sleep function which can be set for 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes. The side-lit dial light will illuminate the LCD green for 15 seconds when the dial light switch is pressed. This radio has a 24 hour digital quartz clock with dual timer. You can set the radio audio to come on with Timer A and Timer B. The current time is displayed when the radio is off. To view the time while the radio is on simply press the [EXE] key. The time will then display automatically for 9 seconds. Please click here to view left and right sides.

4 out of 5 stars Very Satisfied.......2008-01-07

I was hoping to replace my damaged ICF-SW100E, but, finding that Sony had discontinued that model, I purchased the 7600GR.
It is a larger, heavier, set, but I have to say that I'm very satisfied in almost all respects...better reception, clearer sound from the larger speaker, and an FM stereo line output good enough to record classical music progs to replay on my hi-fi (and I'm very particular!).
The four batteries seem to have a long life (better than the two in the SW100, as you would expect), but I purchased the mains adaptor as well; this is also a solid well-made item.
I'd give 5 stars if the aerial mount was less flimsy...I'd hope that it's stronger than it seems, since, despite being a careful guy, I have a habit of breaking aerials! Sony, please note!

5 out of 5 stars Superior performance and a great price........2006-08-09

Pro: Synchronous detection circuit helps a lot with fading signals. Superior battery life. Radio appears solid and well made. The antenna can be pulled away from the case so it extends at a proper vertical angle, not at an awkward angle like the Eton E5 and other cheaper radios.

Con: Whip antenna connection to case is slightly flimsy. 4 AA cells needed; a bit inconvenient for portable use. The radio weighs approx. 600 grams, and the dimensions are slightly large for a compact receiver. The ICF-SW7600GR does NOT come with a power adapter.

Overall, I love this radio, and highly recommend it. Sony has discontinued the ICF-SW100E, so grab a '7600GR before it's discontinued!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Good for the Price.......2005-06-07

I have this radio for 4 years now, and I must admit this is one of the best purchases I made on Amazon. Reception quality is very good on SW and FM, and presets are just so convenient. Perfect for those learning languages, listening to the news from their home country, travelling to remote spots where FM or digital does not reach (but serves as great FM radio as well). Price is very reasonable, for it's technical parameters this is great value for money. Aerial could be a bit sturdier - well nothing is perfect.

4 out of 5 stars Good radio at moderate price for beginners.......2003-09-19

Good clean silver finish (not aluminium), 102 presets, tone switchable to 'News' and 'Music'. Nothing compared to WorldSpace transmission of BBCAsia, but considering my catching BBC from India via SW, pretty good! 4AA size batteries becomes a little incovenient sometimes, when on the move (2 would be so much more convenient!). Scanning digitally thru the whole SW steps range is a little tedious, and I still haven't figured out how to scan the whole band! Wise back-light and hold button. During daytime, I need to connect to an external antennae to get SW. Comes with a chart of all the frequencies and times of transmission of various stations of the world. All in all, a good thing to start with, to scan the SW world.

3 out of 5 stars Not good for wireless security.......2007-08-19

I was about to buy one of these and was just checking the security available as it uses wireless to connect to the Internet.
Unfortunately, it only supports WEP which is no longer secure.
It does not support WPA, so I did not buy it.
Shame really as it looks like a great radio and just what I was looking for.

      4 out of 5 stars A mini radio revolution.......2007-07-04

I am really very pleased with my Imp. It has a very good sound quality. The choice of stations is simply stunning. I am enjoying taking a sound trip around the world, as well in the UK where I live.
However, a word of warning. It was quite complicated to set up with my Netgear Router. You have to know what you are doing. I am quite computer literate, but not an expert.
Basically, it was straightforward if you remove the security settings from the router (but not something you would want to do for long) But it proved a lot more tricky with the WEP key.
However, I praise the makers. They provide a cheap helpline number, and one call sorted my problems.
So, if you are ok with a PC and router, go ahead and get this - it is a fantastic piece of kit.

      5 out of 5 stars Magic MagicBox.......2007-06-03

I moved from an area with great DAB reception to a place where I could barely pick up anything on DAB so I thought internet radio could be a possible alternative. I did some research and plumped for the Magicbox. I am delighted with it. Access to all the DAB stations I used to enjoy plus thousands more radio stations from all over the world. The sound quality is as good as any similar size DAB or FM radio although this depends upon the bit rate of the transmitting station - some are pretty poor but there are plenty of others that are very good.

The set is easy to use. Unfortunately, mine did not automatically set up on plug and play but this was due to the configuration on my Netgear router so make sure you have your router manual handy when you set it up. Accessing stations is simple although beware if you select USA because there are around 6,000 to choose from so it is difficult to find what you want - to put it mildly. As more stations set up then this could become an increasing problem. However, it is possible to search by genre. Any negatives? Not really although it could perhaps do with more than 10 presets when there are thousands of stations to choose from! Choosing a top ten out of that lot is tough!

By the way you can also network the magicbox to your PC's I-tunes library and stream straight to wherever you have your magicbox.

One day all radios will be like this.

      5 out of 5 stars Clever Box.......2007-05-15

The Magic Box was easy to set up. I mainly got this for my wife who is from Finland and got fed up trying to tune to Finnish radio using shortwave. She really likes it. I think there could be more Finnish stations on it but you can ask ask Reciva to add stations you know about that are not downloaded to the Magicbox and they will make then available for download.
Works with WEP secutity fine. Sound quality is pretty fair. As long as you have a wireless broadband router it is no problem to set up.
Couple of things I am not sure about. It has a fixed link to Reciva as far as I can see to download the stations - not sure what happens if Reciva disappears.
Also it would have been great if it worked with Pandora which I use for internet music on my PC - but I don't think it does this.

      5 out of 5 stars Great unit.......2007-03-26

I would definitely recommend this unit. It is really easy to use, easy to setup and looks and sounds great.
The unit supports WPA encryption, which I think is a great plus for this unit as others only support WEP.
It supports "no broadcast of SID" on your wireless router, which is a recommended security practice, however I have noticed that during the first setup of the unit, or when you unplug it and re-plug it back in later, you need to have your SID broadcasting in order to be able to configure it again. The good bit is though that it remembers your WPA key, so you don't have to keep typing it back in!!!
Contrary to other reports I've seen, you can alter the brightness of the backlit display, there are individual settings for the 3 different modes, i.e. Active (on and your pressing keys), Inactive (on and you've not pressed a button for a while) and "standby", so if you intend to use this in a bedroom you can dim the display right down.
Really easy to find radio stations from all around the world. You can search by location or by genre. There are 10 presets so you can save your favorite stations. You can also play "on demand" services, like those that Radio 1 offer, which is shows that have been recorded and can be played at a later date (Cool!, so I can listen to Pete Tong more often!).
Sound quality is great (but obviously dependant on the stream coming from the radio station) and sounds even better when pluged into a home Hi-Fi.
Go on, buy it, you know you should ;-)

      3 out of 5 stars Good introduction.......2008-01-15

The Internet seems to be the new force in listening to the radio.

I have only owned the product for 2 days and am still finding my way around the hundreds of stations available. But here are my first impressions:

I was anticipating having to take a long time to configure the radio to the Internet. It took just a minute, this was with a LAN Ethernet cable

The controls are easy to use and intuitive. There is a brief quick start leaflet but the detailed set up text is found on the CD ROM which is in PDF format. A neat touch is that you can configure the radio via the Internet browser.

The device is small with only one speaker which means that music quality is average. However, it is fine for listening to news and talk shows.

So far I have listened to radio stations in Afghanistan, Canada, USA and Germany.

Costing £70 it is good buy, especially for those first timers in Internet radio.

I have given it 3 stars as there are better products available such as the Tangent range. These are technically better but cost in the price range of £150.

      4 out of 5 stars Where's the music, Pal?.......2007-12-16

Originally purchased to stream music from my PC to another room in the house where there wasn't a PC, I've grown increasingly fond of my MusicPal. So much so, that I bought another one for a different room.

It's a simple concept - essentially a "radio" that connects to your home wireless network and either streams internet radio stations or your own music from any DLNA server you have at home (think PS3, Windows Vista, Windows Media Player 11, Windows Media Centre edition - and I'm sure there are equivalents for the Mac).

It's small (about the size of a couple of paper-packs) and unobtrusively styled with a simple user interface and a slightly retro black/grey monochrome LCD display. Two large dials provide the main controls - the one on the left determining volume and on the right position in the current song. Two smaller buttons, one for favourites and the other for "settings" are all that's needed to guide you through everyday use. The power supply is the only cable it needs although there are sockets for an RJ45 network connection, headphones and audio line-out.

It's simply to set up - plug it in, find your wireless network and give it the appropriate pass-phrase (it supports WEP and WPA) and you're away. It gets a DHCP address and scans for any media servers you have handy. If you've no media servers you can still access any of thousands of Internet Radio Stations (provided you have an Internet connection). These are sorted by country and genre - the array is mind-boggling and the quality widely variable but you can add shortcuts to give you quick access to your favourites at the press of a button. The device can also be configured by connecting to it's built-in web server, including software updates, RSS news-feeds (so that it can scroll the latest news headlines while playing music) and Favourite lists.

Add into the mix a connection to an Internet Time server, combined with sleep and wake-up timers and the MusicPal also becomes a pretty neat alarm clock - it would be nice if you could set the music it wakes you up to as being different to that you went to sleep by - but that's surely fixable in software...

It's all good so far - and obviously I thought enough of it to buy two. But there are some gripes. The internal speaker isn't the greatest and can get very "buzzy" on music with deep bass or high notes. Secondly, the software that interprets playlists always seems to sort them alphabetically, with no option to shuffle songs so there's far more effort required in managing playlists than I had hoped.

So if you're in the market for an internet radio that looks OK, sounds OK and can also stream your own music (MP3 and WMA are supported) then the MusicPal does an OK job which could get better with software updates.

      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Freecom.......2008-01-18

I had read the very mixed reviews about this, ranging from brilliant to useless but decided to try it. The instructions are a bit minimal but the CD loaded perfectly, I saved the PDF instructions (but haven't needed them) and then waited for the stick to find channels. I expected a non-event but instead was amazed when it found 66 stations, including all the expected Freeview channels and masses of digital radio stations. You just need to save the stations, click on the small TV screen, go to full screen and hit the return key to enlarge. Great picture and brilliant reception from the little aerial provided. First class product and good value.

      4 out of 5 stars wrong software.......2008-01-06

I purchased one of these some months ago. What i found was that the supplied software/driver was very poor. I only live 5 miles from one of the most powerful transmitters in the country and still had poor signal displayed and using a roof top aerial. BUT.. i searched around the internet for updated drivers. Freecom have software gateway where they provide drivers to authorised engineers/agents. On there are the correct drivers for this unit plus Toal Media 3. I managed to download these and they work beautifully giving strong signal readings. Altough using rooftop aerial will now try the supplied aerial.
Also the remote doesn't work well because the small hole drilled in the body of the unit that lets the IR signal in from remote control is not lined up with the IR receiver on the circuit board. If you gently drill out the hole and make it bigger you will see the receiver and discover whoever designed the body did not get the hole in the right place!
Overall a bit of mean ness on Freecoms part and shoddy design otherwise spoils a good unit. One * before sofware upgrade,**** after.

      3 out of 5 stars not bad.......2007-11-29

it ok for £22 but a few negatives
1)the areil suuplied probably wouldn't pick up any channels if you lived on top of a transmitter so you need to buy an extension lead to connet to out door ariel
2)even a small movement of the usb can affect the picture
3)the remote is not very usefull from more then a metere away as you need to aim it on a precise point on the usb stick for it to work
4)i was especially diappointed that although you can record a program you cant record one channel while watching another channel
otherwise its ok you get 30 tv channels that you can record with a quality picture.

5 out of 5 stars Great with DVBViewer.......2007-11-23

I have used one of these gadgets for must be getting on 2 years now - on the roof arial via a 6 way booster. Don't be naive - nothing Digi will work on a six inch bit of wire! Alongside it, on another pc I run a Nebula DigiTV usb card that cost 3 time the price about 4 yrs ago. Since they have been mucking around with the frequences and strengths of the Waltham transmitter digital side, the Nebula pixelises Ch4 and associated channels whilst the Freecom is rock solid. As it's easier to spend 22 quid on another Freecom rather than stick a bigger arial on the roof another one is on its way.
For info I use XP - not tried Vista - the supplied Arcsoft software is c**p, expecially if you want to record radio as i do a lot. I use DVBViewer (GE version, but both pro and GE as good as each other). After trying all sorts this is the best third party software around - all for a tenner or so!.
If you want to use any third party software like DVBViewer you need to download the BDA drivers from Freecom. (files 00008584.zip)Install the stick with the BDA drivers like any usb device, not the supplied Arcsoft software. If using DVBViewer, download and install the free DScaler mpeg2 video decoder, the AC3 filter mpeg audio decoder and try using the vmr7 video mixing renderer if you get wavy lines, all set up under options/directshow. There you go a few tips to ease the pain:-)
