I bought a set of these to replace a similar Binatone product with only a 3km range.
After 2 different sets and various testing places these units have less of a range than my cheaper 3km units.
Lots of features but the advertised range is only in absolutely ideal conditions.

These radios are excellent in all aspects except the range. Their are inexpensive, great design, ergonomically designed and feature rich, however the draw back is the range. Out in open country with no obstacles, the range it is quite good, but in the city or put any obstacles in their way and the range reduces to about 250 - 300 metres.

I bought them for trekking and camping and for this, they work fine. But if you are looking for a set of two way radios with a long reliable range, these ain't them.

Good things: The quality, heavy and strong body were the first thing that I noticed, won't fall apart when dropped :). Thick, waterproof ,rubber/plastic made; precise, smart placed buttons with quick acces to functions; strong clear display. With the headset its like talking on a mobile, even at greater distance. Adjustable VOX sensitive for my voice not noises around me. 8 chanells with 38 modulations each, so no other people on your channel. Easy to adjustments to my needs, like rings, chanels memo, volume, VOX sensitivity. Accus keep energy for all day. Cheap for that quality and potential.

Bad things: quite big ones, earpiece does not stay in place ant it's too short, very slow charger.

Havent tried the maximum range jet, but worked well in 1,5 miles distance in a forrest area.

a well built professional radio with massive features.......2004-05-02

The Motorola XTN446 PRM (licence-free) radio opperates on 8 main 446Mhz channels with 38sub ctcss codes and even more dcs tones giving over 120 commbinations on each channel. If thats not secure enough, then you can select 1 of 3 voice encryption codes!
The radio is of a good size and fits nicely in the hand and antenna is short and stubby. The radio comes complete with a bezzel pack for changing the colour of the radio facia. Mine also came with a belt clip/holder which holds the radio very securely. Any stantard Motorola accessory will fit the radio, I've got a drop-in charger (2 hours), a heavy duty speaker microphone and now a covert earpiece for my job in Security. The battery life is massive and lasts over 3 days of long shifts, if not, 4AA type batteries can easily be fitted. The range that can be obtained is similar to other pmr radio due to the 0.5watt output restrictions. The audio quality is very loud and clear for noisy environments where music/machinery is going. The XTN is packed with features like various call tones, two quick access keys, various locks, scan modes and a novel red back-light. This radio is designed with the professional user in mind, must not be mixed up the smaller leisure/family pmr sets. I give these sets a rating of 9/10!

Moto T5622s & Pixmania website purchase.......2007-12-18

The Purchase = 1 star. The Radios = 4 stars!

BEWARE OF PIXMANIA!! After spotting these at an absolute bargain price of £55 for what is usually ~£90, I thought "why not go straight to Pixmania's site?!"

After confirming the order at their website I see a loyalty card costing £11 added without asking and, despite their own terms & conditions stating that all prices were inclusive, VAT was shown at £12 bringing the £55 radios to £75.50!!

LOYALTY CARDS AT £11+VAT?? WHAT A DODGY TRADER!!! I cancelled the order and reordered them through Amazon (Der!). Proof that Amazon is simple & safe. This made the price ~£60.35 delivered.

When I got them, I got Mr MacDonald's experience i.e. he got NiCad batteries instead of NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) and I got a European two-pin plug for the charger! I just bought an adaptor as it was still a very cheap purchase and I couldn't bare to call Pixmania's customer service centre again!

THE RADIOS
I bought these to work with "Autocom Kit200" motorcycle bike-to-bike comms kits. Autocom's kits are half price everywhere at the time of writing (18/12/07).
They're are a pretty good buy from a prestige name and work almost flawlessly. However, if you want absolute quality & a little more range from a 0.5W license radio, you may be better off with Kenwood or Icom but it will then likely cost you ~£200.

Ni cad batteries not so good.......2006-10-07

This is the old model T5622 with NiCad batteries and not the current one which has NiMh batteries. The Ni Cad batteries in the old model sold here do not give as many hours of use as the NiMh batteries in the new/current model.

Walkie Talkies are great for keeping in touch between to people in short distances.

This item could be used for a trip to the shops, park, etc. A majority of users, use walkie-talkie as a means of communicating with their children, whilst they are in the garden, in the playground or local park. This trend has become very popular, as the whole process is absolutely free.

The idea of communicating with someone for short messages is convenient by means of mobile phones, however short calls every now and then sometimes bumps up the phone bills quite dramatically. These gadgets are fantastic; they have provided a fantastic solution to parents.

We also know people also use these at work as well, where different colleagues can interact between different floors communicating at a distance without the need to be face to face every second. This helps when you need to communicate with someone a lot.

Compared to phone bills, these gadgets can be seen as priceless, as phone bills add up as time goes on, whereas these gadgets only costs the user a fixed price at purchase + charging depending on usage. The rechargeable feature is a very big bonus, just put it in the dock for charging.

This does not replace mobile phones as a whole, but we can say you have found a very effective and cheaper way to communicate in distances upto 3km, without having to pay huge bills.
