Product Description
The Forerunner 101 offers athletes and recreational walkers and runners an entry-level personal training device with GPS - operates on two AAA batteries.
The Forerunner 101 stores lap histories for up to two years to provide an archive of workout performance over time. Users can retrieve lap data for previous workouts by date, week, month, or over a specific time interval. For business travelers who want to train on the road, the Forerunner 101 also doubles as a navigator. Users can mark their hotel as a specific location, see their current position on the plotter display, and follow an electronic breadcrumb trail back to their starting point.
Working out with the Forerunner 101 means you're never alone in your personal training, because the unit provides a "Virtual Partner?". This unique feature allows you to set your training goal by configuring your Virtual Partner's pace and workout distance. You'll get a graphic perspective of your performance by viewing your pace in relation to your Virtual Partner's pace, so you can always see at a glance if you're keeping up or falling behind.

Great value!.......2008-01-13
Easy to use and a great aid to running. Signal is brilliant where I am but can imagine it could disappear in dense wood or town area. But then take the warnings in the reviews and move up a model or two to improve this minor problem. Enjoy!
Great but can battle in dense plantations/near tall buildings .......2008-01-13
I have had mine for a bit over 2.5 years and have been very happy with it. It looks bulky but you don't notice it when you are running. Display is easy to read. Automatic history is useful for keeping check of how much training you have done. The bread crumb trail and direction arrow can be useful for navigating when running off road. Also nice that you can get breakdown of runs by laps (mine set a 1km intervals). Only problem (which is why I gave it 4 not 5 stars) is that it can lose signal a bit when in dense plantations or in cities with tall buildings. However, you can see when it is has lost position and can always add a guesstimate for the distance missed. The new 305 and 205 are supposed to be much better under such conditions. Also nice to be able to see approx pace you are running at and how far you have gone when running off road. At our club social run every week I am often asked how far we have gone. Very easy to use too. Just got to remember to keep replacing the batteries so it doesn't die on you. In general NiMh re-chargeables have worked well for me and it is only a few times that I have let them run down too much.
Helps pass the time.......2007-12-08
Worth having especially as a motivational tool - the training partner really makes you run hard on your own. A little bulkier than I thought it would be but comfortable to wear. Gets me out the house on a wet night because you return knowing exactly what pace and distance you've run. Well worth the price.
Keeps you honest!.......2007-06-12
I use mine on every run, set to record each and every miles pace - I don't think the map features etc are much use but at the end of the run it does tell you accurately how far you went and how fast (or slow) your went. One key thing is that you do need to let it get lock before setting off and it does this better on the ground than it does on your wrist. The navigator mode isn't much to write about but it did get me back to my hotel in one very big and strange city. For the price its well worth it as an extra motivational aid - it will keep you honest about how far and fast you are running with the displays of weekly distance and average pace.
Does the job... great value .......2007-04-21
I reluctantly had to buy this after my Garmin GP801 GPS watch finally met it's maker in GPS heaven... the transmitter finally gave up transmitting after 4 years use, i tried an email to Garmin technical but their advice was to reset the device - how i could of done that i don't know, so that went in the bin & it was back on Amazon to help me find a replacement.
After reading other reviews for GPS training devices i quickly narrowed it down to Garmin again. I wasn't too bothered about downloading information to my p.c. or uploading gumpf, all i needed was a lightweight, reliable device to deliver run times, distance, avg. pace etc. My only worry, after owning a Garmin previously was that it would struggle to maintain satellite contact whilst on the wrist & in my case while running through the dense forest! I've been using it for about 3 weeks now & occasionally it loses a signal & gives the 'weak GPS signal' message but soon regains it & results at the end of hour long runs are all within 0.05 mile. I also chose the 101 because i could use AAA batteries off my charger, battery life is good - i'm getting about 10 hours off rechargables, but that maybe due to my batteries needing replacing so maybe 15 hours could be achieved. My only gripes are when using the Virtual Partner function, while running the updating of the distance being ahead/behind seems erratic... i'll look at it initially & it will read, for example, 200ft ahead, the next look a few seconds later will see me 400ft ahead! I've tried adjusting the smoothing but has little effect. At the end of the run it always re-adjusts itself to give an accurate analysis but during the run it can be mis-leading.
My other gripe... upon analysing a run through map mode, when scaling out a map to around 1-1.5 miles, detail can be lost through the map being offset on the screen. A 'pan' option would of been usful to centre the map.
Overall a great training device for the money & does exactly what it claims.

Awesome.......2008-01-02
I use this unit as a back up when flying about and it works brilliantly. It is almost identical to an Etrex in terms of functions (totally identical I think), but is so so much more useable becuase it is permanently "out" in view of the satellites, so hardly loses lock. It also leaves your hands free for other stuff. The expandable strap provided lets you put it of the outside of jackets for walking.
I use rechargeable AAA batteries and they last ages (it has a different power drain for these batteries). I didn't get the 201 version because I sometimes travel away from mains power and need to replace the batteries. I used one pretty much solid for 18 months (everyday, no joke) and it survived very well. The screen eventually went (but the GPS element still works (great as a position tracker). Garmin will fix your unit if it breaks for a fixed fee of £30, which in my case got me a new unit...bargain!
I also have bought a second (or is it now third?) unit for my motorcycle to give me a digital speedo and trip meter. The mount is not particularly easy to get hold of but is very very good. The main downside of this device is if you want to hook it up to computer. You need to get a PC link cable and a serial-to-usb adapter, which can cost a total of £30 or so. But well worth it. I download all my flying data to Garmin Worldmap, which converts it to Google Earth.
There is no other GPS that does what this unit does. Great
Great for Peace of Mind.......2007-12-04
I bought this to go in a safety bag for my guides taking visitors to offshore towers(towers that get cut off from the land by the tide when it comes in)around Jersey. It is not used for navigation as such but as a back up if the fog comes in and people get seriously disorientated (the whole point being that it can point you in the direction you should be travelling if you dont know where your starting from)It is waterproof in shallow water - even in salt water - but do make sure you rinse it thoroughly afterwards. It is simple and easy to read - even in the dark with backlight.A solid piece of kit. The reason for giving it a 5 rating is that in its class of GPS you wont find much better, so although it does not have a multitude of features for its class it is the best I have found.
The only negative, but not one to drop a star for, is that it does not have an electronic compass, however if you are serious about navigation you should have two magnetic compasses anyway!
So good I bought a second one.......2007-11-25
Unfortunately I lost my first Fortrex 101 photographing somewhere near Thetford, but I couldn't find anything better at the price to replace it with, so I immediately bought another one. The new one booted up first time straight out of the box within a couple of minutes.
I haven't noticed any trouble with waterproofing as reported in other reviews, but I have noticed that it is important when closing the battery compartment to press the cover quite firmly until you hear it click shut, as there is a rubber seal that makes it quite stiff to close the battery compartment completely.
Garmin Foretrex 101 Review.......2007-05-18
It is simple to use - the only thing you need to learn is how to change units and reset your maximum speeds and trip distance. It has good battery life.
I bought it for windsurfing to see how fast I was going. It makes a sail more interesting, and you can enter your times on the Boards magazine speed ladder. I also use it for running, to check how far I have run, and at what speed. (So I have to change the units from knots to mph)
Only gripe: the battery compartment is not waterproof. Apparently this is normal, but you have to remove the batteries and dry them each time, OR buy an Aquapac bag to keep it in. I have done this, and it does not affect performance or access to the buttons.

compact, light and easy to use. I have found this item very useful in hill fog on top of Kinder Scout. The only drawback I've noticed is that the unit can lose the satalite single quiet easily if you're in built up areas

certainly is light.......2004-05-18
Well it certainly is light. Sony claims 'you hardly know it's there' but I don't agree with that, it's not as good as that. The colour is sleek black, had it a few weeks now and still works well. It quite well made.
Good point is that it's light, adjustable to size and the cord is just the right size. The bad point is that the sound, is a little heavy on the bass side. But overall I'm quite happy with it.
