Rubbish and expensive aftercare from IOMEGA.......2007-06-18
Purchased in November 2006, not used many times as been away in India for 4 months. Used the drive last month to store data on. Product has now packed up completely.
The award winning customer services took over a week to reply, you can only e mail, unless you want to pay a £20 fee to phone.
Still trying to get an RMA number or any sort of reply that does not run me round in cirles with their links on their "award winning site"
Wish I had purchased from a better company with more integrity than IOMEGA

This is the third Iomega external hard drive that I have purchased over the years and maybe I have been lucky, but they have always worked perfectly for me.
This drive is slim, quiet and has a good transfer rate (although I have not timed it or benchmarked it against anything else).
No matter how good the external hard drive you buy, there is ALWAYS a chance the drive will fail leaving the data seemingly unretrievable. You could open the external drive unit and contact the hard disk manufacturer, which I believe is Seagate in this case, as they may have the means of retrieving SOME of your important lost data.
Failures could happen no matter what medium you stored the data on (CD/DVD/USB Memory/Internal or External Hard Drive) etc. My solution is to use one of the online storage companies and to upload gigs and gigs of photos, mp3's, dvds etc, but I know that even that isn't 100% secure. I use the external hard drive as a more convenient way of accessing my backed-up data than downloading what I need every time.
As gut-wrenchly annoying as it must be to lose all your photos, you simply can't have too many backup copies of them, and you definitely can't rely on only one medium!

Iomega is a good name. I have used their products many times in the past.
I was pleased to purchase an external Iomega hard drive, feeling safe and secure. Alas, how wrong I was. Having carefully stored all the digital photos and videos I had taken over the past five years with nieve confidence, you can not imagine how distraught I was when a terrible grating sound emerged from the Iomega 320gb storage device I had trusted with so many memories important to me. The product is less than nine months old and already scrap!!! along with my videos and photos. For all it's life with me it stood, unmoved next to my PC. Never abused. I shall not be replacing it with another Iomega product!

So is it 250GB or 320GB??

I chose the Viewsonic V171s because of the 90 degree portrait/landscape pivot feature and also because it's specification was comparable with the rest of the best.
Good features:
*The stand is extremely nice to use. It swivels to 90 degrees really easily and is very stable. I haven't seen a better one on any other monitor. Cable management via (flimsy looking) plastic clips is very effective.
*The on screen diagnostics are easy to use and automatically adjust to the monitor orientation (portrait or landscape).
*Software is included to rotate your image if your graphics card doesn't already support that feature and it works perfectly on my Windows XP Pro set-up.
*No dead pixels
*Very clear text (I've only tried the native 1280x1024 resolution)
*Well packaged (by Viewsonic and Amazon)
Not so good features:
*One criticism is that the monitor brightness is insanely high (at least with my onboard NForce graphics), even when adjusted to the minimum. This is easily corrected with software like Adobe gamma so is not a real issue for most.
*Colour adjustment is quite tricky. Everything appears so incredibly bright and saturated when you are used to a CRT. I suspect most people transitioning from CRT to TFT find this to be the case.
*The "silver" version is mostly black with silver only around the screen itself. Had I realised this, I would have probably opted for the all black V171b model instead.
*If you plan to use the monitor mainly in portrait orientation, be aware that the viewing angle isn't quite as good as with horizontal orientation and if you're viewing slightly off-axis you can observe slight contrast differences across the screen. Fortunately the swivel adjustment action is a joy to use so this isn't likely to cause a problem for most users.
I can't see any ghosting but I haven't tried DVD's with it.
Overall, I'd recommend it but only if portrait mode capability is important to you. I think you're paying quite a lot for the nice stand.
Viewsonic VP171s a gamers choice........2004-02-14
Being an avid fan of games i was looking for a monitor which would play them, without the dreaded ghost effect, and i am pleased to say that the viewsonic VP171s did not let me down. The screen is very clear and bright,even in lower than recommended resolutions, and the on OSDisplay functions and buttons were easy to use, allowing it to be set up in minutes. The monitor came with every type of power cable you could ever need as well as a VGA & DVI cable which was exellent as my graphics card takes both. I tried both the digital and the VGA inputs and the quality of the image did not really change that much , only the brightness which is ample even via VGA, so dont worry if your card does not support DVI output. The stand is very well designed, using a clever telescopic system to enable the screen to be adjusted up and down with ease, there is even cable clamps at the rear to keep the cables tidy. I have been testing it out with all the latest game and i am not disappointed so far.
