review plantronics 550 usb headset microphone.......2007-12-12
this is the mic ive used in ages no distortion static wen i use it to record and play back and wen in chat rooms sounds lovely people have said. im getting this 2 replace a logitec usb desktop microphone which after a year went funny on me like static wen i speak in it. but this is razor sharp 30 quid in pc world was going to get the logitec 40 quid usb headset but 30 quid i got this instead. very happy with it.
Brilliant headset!.......2007-11-29
I come from a background of Plantronics Headsets. Prior to the DSP-550 I had a DSP-500, and DSP-400. All have worked very well and were only replaced when I broke them. I use headsets for VoIP (TeamSpeak) frequently, and these headsets are ideal. They require no drivers, and work instantly. If you prefer you can install a driver downloadable from their website, and this allows for the use of the inline mute and volume buttons.
The sound quality is excellent and identical to the DSP-500, both for the headphones (loud, clear, full of good quality bass) and the microphone (clear, noise free, loud, no distortion).
The headset is comfortable, and made from high quality plastic and leather - I have no idea if it's real or fake leather, but it feels more comfortable than the cloth on the DSP-500. The microphone can swing out the way when not in use. Additionally, the foam microphone screen ball that used to sometimes fall off the DSP-500 and 400 has been replaced by a more sleek looking cylindrical one which is kept in place by a plastic bit - again an improvement.
As the headset is USB, it appears as an additional audio device in Windows. This has the advantage that you can use the headphones and/or the existing speakers of your computer in any combination for different audio sources/programs. For example, you could use your main speakers for everything, or you could play music from your speakers and use the headphones for voice, or use your headset for music and play a game using your main speakers, etc.
In short, it's an excellent headset, it's comfortable, great audio quality, couldn't be easier to set up (plug in and go), and compared to the DSP-500 it looks better and feels of a better quality.
My only complaint is that when I purchased this headset it cost around £30. It now seems to have increased by 50% to around £45. Why?
Plug-in and go with Vista.......2007-09-27
I'm using these for on-line gaming on a PC with Vista home premium. Plugged them into the USB port and the driver loaded instantly, the headset working within seconds. They sound great, the microphone works well (according to my on-line friends), and they are comfortable to wear (even with my large head!). I like the mic boom which can be lifted out the way when not in use. They seem pretty well constructed and rugged enough for everyday use. They arrived within 3 days of being ordered. I'm very happy with this purchase.

Bluetooth headset.......2007-07-02
Before I bought this plantronics 510 headset I had a free one with my phone, I could'nt here people very well so I bought this plantronics one. I am very please with it because I do alot of miles up and down the country I needed to here people properly this fits the bill. You can here people very clear there is no interference with this bluetooth so I would recommend this to anybody.
Have had many problems.......2007-06-08
I am a management consultant so travel a lot and make many business calls from the car including many conference calls with colleagues so noise cancelling is critical. At first it seemed to work quite well, but then I was getting complaints of intereference. I tried it myself and using my voice mail and found it had developed some sort of fault of generating so much static it was hard to hear my voice. I duly returned it, but have found the replacement very poor. On most conference calls I am the one asked to go on "mute" because the it seems to pick up and amplify any sort of background noise. Perhaps these are issues with my individual headset, but I am not trying a third one. I have found the Nokia HB900 to be ok (I bought one and it was stolen so I returned to the 510 for a while and it has not improved, I am on amazon ordering a new Nokia, but thought I would share my experience at the same time.)
The only upside is they replaced the first one pretty promtly so good customer service.
A flawed design?.......2007-02-15
Owned this for about 6 months and in day to day use it was great. Very light, good battery life.
However, because I used it daily, I was in the habit of alternating which ear I used it in to keep aural balance. This necessitates rotating the extended microphone arm. Over time this has resulted in the wiring, which I have discovered is all packed in around the swivel joint, from becoming snagged and sheared by the arm, rendering the unit useless.
So, a decent unit providing you don't swivel the microphone arm.
Great Product.......2006-11-21
I bought this headset because of the claimed 'noise reduction' technology, and because I needed something light with long battery life. I cannot recommend this highly enough, I frequently use the headset during long walks with my dog, in all weathers, and both transmission and reception is excellent. Typical battery life seems to be around 3 days without charging (and with frequent use), and it is so comfortable I often forget I'm wearing it. Outstanding product for anyone using their phone outside - no downside.
great product but could be improved.......2006-08-19
Like other reviews I have to agree that this is a great product. It's comfortable, sound is excellent and good battery life. Why not 5 points? Well, it has two shortcomings. One, the light flashes to tell you that the battery is running out. Not of much use if you are wearing it at the time. An audable signal would be much more useful. Two. I bought this because it will connect with two phones at once, which it does. The instructions and plantronics website make no mention of the fine detail of how this works. When you press 'redial' on the headset for example, which phone might it redial the number on? Not necessarily the last phone you made a call on. Also, it doesn't handle voicedial very well. Great for handling incoming calls on two phones but not great if you need to make a lot of calls while driving.

Disappointing at 10 metre.......2007-09-21
Had high hopes that this would banish the need for a skype phone and allow me to be handsfree. Plug in and play and installed with skype like a dream.
However was crestfallen to note that I could not leave the vicinity of the computer and roam my small home. I think it is doubtful that it offer 10m bluetooth 'roaming'. Sent it back and got myself a netgear dulaphone and I am very happy as it has speakerphone and a headset jack option.
Not bad....but not great.......2007-09-08
Purchased this with great expectations, unfortunatley feel a little let down. Have problems connecting with dongle each time machine is restarted and now exp white noise interference.
Fantastic but BT dongle supplied doesn't work with Vista.......2007-08-06
Great device with XP, but BE WARNED - the supplied BT dongle doesn't work under Vista. The 'Plantronics BT Adapter' refuses to install. Have tried all the usual tricks for getting troublesome USB devices to install but no joy. It seems I'm not alone in having this problem, and Plantronics support are being unhelpful by telling me it's a OS problem, not theirs. Especially when I can see from this board and others there's a suggestion about different firmware versions and compatibility. I will call them again and update this review with the results.
So potentially a great product but let down by incompatibility and poor customer service (so far).
-----------------------
08 August 2007 UPDATE:
Just spoke to Plantronics who inform me that this headset is NOT COMPATIBLE with Vista, period. They pointed out (quite correctly) that it does state in very small print on the box "Windows XP/2000 Required", and that the product I should have bought is the new 910 model, which is Vista compatible. Presumably this comes with the new BT dongle. So I'm returning the 510 to Amazon as I speak. However, Amazon should state this quite clearly on the item!
Technology that rocks.......2007-05-25
I've had this headset for about 4 months now, I am using it all the time with Skype, and I really love the flexibility it gives me while talking. I find it comfortable to wear, battery lasts for at least 5hrs, it's easy to recharge, quality of the calls is good, the signal is good enough to enable me to walk around my single bedroom flat while talking, and it's small enough to take it on trips. Never had any software problems. It is a bit pricy, but if you are using Skype a lot, it's well worth the investment. Recommended!
Great product, but some versions may not work with Vista.......2007-05-07
Couldn't be happier with the quality of this piece of kit; it works as well as any other with most PC bluetooth stacks but, better still, works flawlessly with the supplied dongle with no pairing or drivers required. Sound quality is what you would expect from a small headset, but noticeably better than the previous Jabra 250 I was using. I've had great success using it with Ventrilo on my Windows XP PC, on a Nokia 6230i, and with Skype on a Dell Axim X50.
Unfortunately mine (bought in January 2007) does not install correctly under Vista which is the only reason it doesn't get the full 5 stars. Plantronics support have confirmed to me today that some versions of the dongle are not compatible with Vista - there should be a version number to the right of the product label on the adapter; if it is version 1p23, then this is compatible, if it is 1p15 (or anything else), this is not compatible. Of course, there is no way to tell for certain whether the one supplied here will be the correct version but if it is new stock, it should be.
If, like mine, the adapter is not compatible I would advise contacting Plantronics support as they appear to be doing their best to resolve problems - mine should be sorted very soon and although there was some delay in the initial response, follow-ups have been very quick (especially since it's a Bank Holiday) and I'm quite happy with their support on this issue.

Customer Reviews:
Good sound quality - bad build quality.......2007-12-18
Last week my rating for this headset would have been 4 stars. The sound quality is really very good and the loss of a star simply reflects the awkward to handle collapsing configuration and the lack of some kind of tellback on the inline volume control - I was caught out a couple of times thinking that Skype had gone dead on me when I had simply leant on the "-" volume control, zeroing it. From this week I dock a further 2 stars - the lefthand earpiece has failed after just over 12 months of use. This fault has also been reported by a couple of other reviewers, so something is wrong.
Great headset, excellent customer service, but not Mac OS X friendly.......2007-11-15
Long story, cut short:
I bought a pair of DSP400s and found them to be perfect for office use. Good sound quality, comfortable on my big head, and collapsible to help store them away. I did find them to be a little flimsy, but after 8 months of use they were showing no signs of wear. And then one of the earphones stopped working.
I called Plantronics on their free phone number, spoke to somebody in customer services who was polite and very helpful. She sent me an email to return my headset: I followed the internet link in the email to print out a returns label (they can post it to you, if need be). Slapped returns label - postage pre-paid - onto a box and sent them headphones off via the local Post Office. A week later, UPS delivered the replacement headset.
The replacement DSP400 was a revised version that was built from a different plastic was much less fragile in feel than the older version - it really did feel much more rigid and sturdy. However, this unit turned out to be slightly different: rather than direct to USB, it uses a USB adaptor that you plug ths small headphone and microphone cables into. This proved to be incompatible with Mac OS X for some reason, and the USB bus inside my Mac often lost the headset signal, causing the Mac to revert to using the internal speakers.
I called the free phone number again and another very nice lady told me that the 'new' DSP400 was known to have compatibility issues with OS X. The solution was to upgrade (downgrade in price, mind you) to the DSP500. Repeat returns process.
One week later and the DSP500 has been delivered today. I actually prefer it to the DSP400, although it doesn't have the stowability that the DSP400 has since it is not collapsible: fine for office use, but not for travelling. Since I am not doing much travelling, that's not a factor for me.
So, what are my conclusions?
1) Plantronics make excellent headsets, even though the earphone on my first DSP400 did fail after 8 months or so
2) Plantronics has a top-notch customer support system in place. That's becoming increasingly rare these days, and it fills me with confidence in them
3) Not all Plantronics headsets are Mac OS X compatible. Best call their free phone number and check before you buy if you are a Mac user
Good at first.......2007-11-15
Like the other reviews I was impressed with the quality of the sound of this headset but I have had similar problems too. Firstly the microphone tends to sit very close to your mouth to the point where it touches it on occasions and therefore it is in the way. If you move it a little vertically so it doesn't bother you the people on the other end of the line can no longer hear you. I am also down to mono as one of the speakers has died at 1 year! Sound = 5 Stars Build quality/design 2 stars. Please note that other users haven't had issues.
Not very impressed.......2007-09-15
I was given a set of these headphones for my Birthday, because I had seen them on amazon and thought they looked good.
The Sound quality is good, and the microphone is a nice one as well, but aside from that I have to say these are some of the worst designed Headphones I've ever seen. Thier not comfortable to wear at all, the plastic frame has little in the way of adjustability and is quite flimsy. A few drops and it breaks straight across the Top hinge. The Cusions on the headphones are nice, But wearing them is another matter. These headphones have to be worn Over your head, let they lack any kind of decent hold and slip around a lot. The Huge Microphone on its stick cannot be extended away from your mouth, and has a very limited degree of movment up or down, So the number of ways to wear the headset and avoid having a Mouth full of Fuzz are Extremely Limited.
Over all, The only decent thing about these headphones is the sound quality. Useing them is a whole other matter.
Great sound, comfortable, will break after 12 months!.......2007-08-22
This headset produces good quality sound and the microphone seems good quality - never had any complaints from other parties when I've been using it. It is also comfortable to wear - I find the ear 'cushions' much more comfortable that the leather equivalents.
HOWEVER, mine lasted a little over 12 months (used daily) before one of the earpieces stopped working. I'm sure it's a simple fix - probably a loose connection somewhere - but nonetheless not very impressive.

Don't buy a Uniband Headband.......2008-01-05
Just bought the headset and it seems a great product but as suggested, I bought a Uniband Headband. Anyone else should not bother as the headset already comes with the headband included.
Great gadget, but beware of its operating range.......2007-12-10
I quite like this headset, but I find that it reaches its maximum operating distance at less than 20 feet from the base. Admittedly, there are a couple of brick walls and a brick chimney (also an empty corridor, mind you) in between the base and the headset when communication fails, but still its range is frankly disappointing considering I use it exclusively within a small flat, no garden. I wouldn't, however, return the set on this basis alone, but this problem will render it unusable for some. Another minor disadvantage is that making calls involves dialling from the handset and then transferring the call to the headset: a bit of a palaver, depending on how many calls one makes.
On the plus side, it is light, comfortable and the sound quality is sufficient. Recommended, but beware of its operating range!
FANTASTIC If you are spend a lot of time on your phone.......2007-11-15
This is the BEST cordless headset available in the market (SADLY NOT WIDELY ADVERTISED). Good 50-75 metres range in a two storey house and VERY SIMPLE TO USE. It will transform your life and will leave you wondering WHY you did not buy this NECK SAVING GADGET years ago !!!! The earpiece volume is good and mic supresses background noise well and the set is very light. £65-£70 is a very good price for this fantastic headset !!!!
You need (to BUY additionally or HAVE) at least ONE DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) handset for this to connect with (its mate). This will be equivalent to your Mobile (Cell) Phone communicating with your handsfree via the Blutooth technology. Note- The Bluetooth system does not work with your home phones in a simple way as the DECT !
You can also use your old cordless (Non-DECT) handsets as additional sets to make a call and use your Plantronics C65 headset at the same time without having to transfer the call like you HAVE TO with its DECT handset. SO your old handsets will still be in play as additional handsets BUT you NEED at least one DECT HANDSET PHONE. You will find DECT handset above or in your local catalogues.
NOW go ahead and BUY this wonderful Gadget and your neck and hands will thank you for years to come. You can do all other work at home or in your office with one hand (side of neck)free of a handset. It will get your HANDS.....FREE !!!!!!
Great headset.......2007-10-29
I've been using my home phone more and more for business calls with overseas contacts and need to use my computer at the same time. Getting a rather stiff neck one day convinced me it was time to switch over to a headset; after all I use one all the time on Skype so why not with a landline?
If you've already got a DECT phone, you're in luck. If not, you might want to try the phone I got with it, the Panasonic KXTCD820. Just to be clear, this headset will only work if you've got a DECT base station. All you do is sync the two of them up by holding down the mute button and waiting for the beeps (a lot like pairing a bluetooth headset). If you're getting any problems make sure your DECT base station PIN is 0000.
Once set up, there are two ways to play. One, if your phone rings you just put the headset on and click answer to pick up. Two, you dial using your existing phone keypad and then transfer the call over.
In use, the headset is light and comfortable. Sound quality is excellent and the batteries last plenty of time. I have the handy charging stand on my desk so I don't need to get up to answer the phone, and I haven't found sound quality varies at all as I wonder around the house making tea and doing other things whilst talking. Nice piece of kit, as you'd expect from Plantronics.
Range Problems.......2007-03-16
Great reception when in range. There is an issue for me on these units. I have 2 of them. When the base station (reciever) is placed anywhere in my house I can use the headset to give 100% reception. When i say 100% I mean caller cannot distinguish from normal phone and you will perhaps find that the volume you hear at is a little softer than normal. That said they really work flawlessly indoors. However, when I go in my garden I get a range of no more than 20 feet. I have even placed the base station with the actual unit plugged in to my lounge and the base outside on the patio and the range is only 20ft in my garden. As I don't have a football pitch for a garden but more like 70ft, it is disappointing that these units will not allow me to roam around the garden. I might well put the base unit on an extension lead and place it in the middle of the garden, but as you can see the 100% factor diminshes down to 5% outdoors. As I said I have 2 of the units so I am either extremely unlucky, am doing something fundemently wrong, or this is a flaw in these products. I just can't figure out how I would get less range outside compared to a range that has to encounter walls indoors though. Hope this is helpful perhaps other owners could comment.

Additional info.......2007-05-16
Delivered to door in 27 hours from ordering it thru home-phoneshop.
Arrived with three earloops (s/m/l) + two over the headbands (one cushioned, one swiveled). It is so light, I am using the earloop for hour long conversations just fine.
Using with Skype 3.1.0.152 on PC and u CAN hang up thru the headset Talk button OK.
Don't seem to need to plug transformer in, works fine off 500mA powered USB off back of monitor - one less cable.
Had a Olympia Dualphone Skype handset a couple of years which this was to replace that, but the two work together fine so I won't throw away Dualphone just yet.
Works fine. Long range. Well made. Look cool - I have always wanted to be a Borg ;-)
Plantronics USB for softphones/Messenger.......2007-02-21
Ordered this kit to use with softphone (BT), online messenger (Yahoo!; MSN; AIM Triton). Getting to the point where I was feeling tied to my desk while online. The kit integrated with all messenger programmes without a hitch, and the Personocall software works well with the softphone. I can now get up to make a cuppa tea while still chatting online!
Sound quality is what I expected from Plantronics. They make headsets by the million for contact centres and know their stuff. Yet to find a blackspot anywhere in the house. Haven't tried the shower, though. That would be going too far. I'm delighted.
CS60 -USB with Skype.......2006-03-20
I use the headset with XP & Skype (v2). Call clarity to landlines is excellent - people listening now seem not to be able to tell I'm on VOIP (unless a "skypism" occurs). Call clarity to other skype users not quite so good, but still okay (much better than with standard bluetooth mobile headsets which I'd tried previously).
Call pick up and hang up can't be activated from headset, because I'm on skype v2 (ie I have to use the mouse to start/end calls). Apparently only skype v1 supports that capability according to Plantronics(as at 20 Mar 06), which is a minor frustration.
Otherwise I'm very pleased and being wireless is fantastic.

expensive for what they are, and a bit qurky.......2007-12-08
I purchased these headphones because of the included usb connector. The connector/driver is tempermental. I sometimes have to reboot a couple of times to get winxpsp2 to recognize it. Sound quality on skype is good for both headset and microphone. Headphones may be flimsy, but are also light and comfortable.
good usb connection flimsy headset +UPDATE.......2006-07-11
[...] the usb connection is useful the actual headset is very flimsy and the key thing is that the microphone can move vertically but not horizontally, which meant that the first time I put the headset on the microphone was practically in my mouth - there is some flexibility in the microphone arm but as I said - disappointingly flimsy for the price.
UPDATE- yep they have broken already, and I was being careful as I said I had noticed they were flimsy; The left ear piecekeeps falling out it's socket. RUBBISH.
Skype 120mins free - OFFER OVER.......2006-06-15
Bought these headphones for the developers in work, some of whom use Skype, but was disappointed that the free 120mins offer lapsed on 31.03.2006! This really should be stated. But overall happy with the product
Full marks.......2006-06-14
I bought this headset a while back to use for Skype calls. My calls last around 1 to 2 hours, so I needed something which is comfortable and has good sound quality. This product gives me both of those qualities. I have already bought a second set to use in the office and bought a third set for friends. This product is great and easy to use/set up.
Excellent Headset for MacOSX and Macintosh machines.......2005-10-17
I bought this after reading a few reviews online and seeing that people with OSX 10.3.x got it and seemed to be happy with it so I thought I'd give it a go.
No problems whatsoever just plugged it in and it works very well, shows up in sound as Plantronics Headset in OSX 10.4.2.
Audio quality of the earphones is very good and certainly good enough for music and gaming. The microphone is of outstanding quality for the price and this headset works extremely well with Skype which is the main reason for my purchase. Phone conversations for both myself and others are much clearer and audible. Outstanding headset and recommended for all Mac users, the headset runs from the Keyboard USB port no problems.
Small electrical spikes are noticeable through the headset, but if your electric supply is clean and you have a UPS or Surge protected strips you hardly notice them.
