Really nice printer, but expensive ink.......2008-01-15
I bought an iP4300 a few months ago. One of the features that I was most interested in, is the ability to print straight onto printable CDs and DVDs. The results really are excellent, as long as you use a disc with a good quality printable surface. The only problem I had, was that the supplied software only lets you adjust the disc diameter to 118mm. That leaves you with just a very slight white ring around the edge of discs. I now use Acoustica Label Maker and that works absolutely perfectly. Just remember to adjust the settings for the diameter of the disc and the diameter of the inner hole for the best results. I use 119mm for all discs, and adjust the size of the inner hole depending on the brand.
You will also need to purchase a USB cable, as one is not provided. This really makes no sense to me, and it's a shame that manufacturers can't include one in the box considering how little they cost. Still, you can pick one up cheaply on Amazon if you need one.
The print cartridges are "chipped". That means that they have a small microchip attached to them in an attempt to force you to buy Canon's own replacements. The generic cheap ink cartridges that you can buy do not come with a chip, so if you want to use them you have to remove the chip from your old Canon cartridge and attach it to the generic one. I've had reasonable success with this (I've had 2 carts that the printer won't recognise), paying just £10 for a full set of 5 cartridges which is FAR cheaper than buying Canon originals at about £50 a set. When you use non-Canon carts, you may be voiding your warranty, and the ink levels can no longer be monitored, so take that into consideration.
Overall, this is a great printer. Print speed is fast, and the quality of the prints is excellent, both on paper and on discs. It's only really let down by the price of the replacement Canon ink cartridges - to replace all 5 will cost you around £50, which is close to the price of the printer itself.
Don't buy this printer.......2007-11-21
I've had this printer for just 3 months started off brilliantly but now has a print head problem and won't work.
Amazon won't help in the least and just keep refering me back to canon.
Canon won't do anything unless I return it to thier repair agent. COST OF POSTING AND INSURANCE IS NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTY AND IT WEIGHS 14 ILBS
Do a google search for canon print head problems and you will see they have a major problem world wide !! caveat emptor.
Adendum to above.
Canon authorised repair centre CRC Ltd in Woking Surrey gave me their UPS account code to get printer sent back FOC. Brand new printer returned 3 days later-superb service. Don't know why Canon weren't more up front with this info??
product update .......2007-11-15
I rec'd product on time well pacaged.
I have been using for about a week , it was easy to install and prints good quality prints. I have had no problem with ink running out yet (although bought new set just in case) overall very satisfied with printer would recomend to any one.
Superb machine, great value for money.......2007-11-08
Bought mine 2 months ago to replace an HP machine that had died.
Installation, onto an XP machine, was straightforward, and it just worked first time, no messing. I was initially disappointed that there's no printed user manual, it gets installed on your PC. However, you don't need a manual. Everything is intuitive including the features that attracted me to it, namely double sided printing (once you've twigged Canon call it duplex printing) and printing onto CD.
Print quality is superb. Straight from the box, the photo quality is much much better than the HP which took hours of tweaking to get anything like decent quality prints. Text printing is hard to distinguish from laser quality. In fact I've relegated my old laser printer to the loft.
Some reviewers say it's noisy. True I've met quieter printers, but the noise has never bothered me, and certainly shouldn't put you off buying one unless you live in a public library. My only grouse is that it takes up a lot of desk space, especially when the paper delivery tray is fully extended. The tray stows away very neatly when it's not in use, so not a big problem.
Overall, I'm delighted. It's a superb machine and great value for money. Well done Canon!
What an impressive printer this is.......2007-10-24
23 Oct 2007 - received my delivery today!
Vista driver is on the operating system - which was very important to me in chosing a new printer - no problems at all with installing it. It can be used from Windows 98 onwards and even on a Mac.
I actually bought 2 of them (one for me, other one as a gift for my son)and was chuffed with the low price. Actually the first box I opened had a damaged cartridge and have reported this to the seller, but it is no big problem.
I am so impressed with its performance and high quality output and wish I had bought it a long time ago. For 12 years or more I had been an Epson user - now I can't understand why I bothered with them.
Soon the second printer will be with my son - I know he will be delighted with it.
