Im no expert but i think these headphones are great, i needed to update my ipod ones so i went for these, brilliant sound quality, huge bass and very comfortable with the 3 pairs of rubber bits. If your thinking of getting rid of your standard headphones but are unsure if they'll be that different go for it! you will see!
had them a week now so i couldn't tell you about the problems other people have had but I really hope i don't get any problems...

Technically, these earphones are top class. I use them regularly on the London Underground, where there's a considerable amount of background tunnel noise, and they're excellent at blocking out that background noise. I was able to pick out quieter, more delicate sounds - like the cello in some symphonic pieces - that I simply never heard when using my iPod's original earphones in utter silence.
The only problem is a practical one: the earbuds can come off easily. I tend to wind these earphones around my iPod and chuck them haphazardly into my bag, so I've lost one earbud already. I've had to make do with using a larger size, which doesn't quite fit.
Not for the untidy listener.
Great sound but crazy cord length.......2007-09-22
I previously owned some black Sony fontopia headphones very similar to these and could not have been more pleased with them. They lasted around 4 years before I lost one of the earbuds and decided to get a new pair.
I am surprised that so many people have complained about the quality of these headphones - the cord looks exactly the same as the one on my previous pair which lasted so long, despite feeling fragile. I've been using these for about 3 months and no sign of wear yet.
I can't criticize the in-ear design and sound quality - I find regular earphones painful after sustained use and I have trouble keeping them in my ears, even when sitting still. These stay in my ears, even when jogging, and I can use them for long periods - I'm sure it depends on the shape of your ears but expect that they'll work for almost everyone if pushed in far enough, with appropriate choice of earbud size. The sound you get is much richer and with more depth, particularly with lower tones - than regular outer-ear headphones.
If you like to talk or eat whilst listening to music these may not be ideal - they block out exterior sound and exaggerate sounds in your head (such as chewing). This does have obvious benefits though - you hear the music better, and needn't turn it up loud to block out unwanted noise. Useful and better for your ears.
The main criticism I have is the bizarre length of the cord - without the extension it is only long enough to reach a shirt or inside-suit pocket and with it, it hangs down well below an average waist - perhaps so that they can be used when connected to the back of a computer? That's the only reason I can think of to have it that long.
Overall, very pleased and well worth the extra money over regular headphones (I can't comment on whether the cheaper but similar-looking Sennheiser headphones are as good or better - the rumours of so many fakes around put me off).
Couldn't get on with these.......2007-09-01
I tried to like these, but I couldn't get on with them. The sound was clear although a lot lower than previous earphones, but the bass wasn't very strong unless I pushed them right into my ear. They would never stay right in though, and were always sliding out even when using the different sizes. I found the left side to be more annoying as the lead on the left side is very small, the weight of the plastic part where the lead splits into left and right would pull it out of my ear, it also made me feel like my head was at an angle, which can't be a good thing!

Having had a black pair of these that fell apart (cable broke up) I bought these with a sense of trepidation. The material seems to be different form the black ones, it's stiffer and seems less rubbery so hopefully they will last. The sound is cracking, but after 3 or 4 months the sound has stopped coming from the left ear piece. I don't use them massively so very dissapointed. Will not be buying Sonys again.
