Easy to install and works faultlessly.......2007-11-26
With SATA drives becoming more readily available and in many cases being cheaper, when my hard drive crashed on my desktop it was the perfect opportunity to put in a massive drive (720GB) replacing my old 160GB and thus enabling me to manage my music, video and snaps more effectively.
On a machine where SATA wasn't standard, this device was a great alternative to using up a slot. It is the simplest of things to use; plug it into the IDE port on the desktop and plug in a SATA drive with the two cables (power and data). It was that simple, it took about the same length of time to fit the drive and I didn't need to check any jumper settings.
Performance wise, it appears to work faster. I've not compared it to my old drive with a performance test, but accepting the specs of the new drive are better than the old, the card certainly isn't a bottle neck and the performance improvement of the drive is appreciated by the system.
I should also add that EWLink were the easiest people in the world to work with, prompt delivery which was so transparent you assumed it was Amazon direct and were quick at answering my preliminary questions.

Best item bought from amazon.......2007-12-07
I'm nonplussed at reviews mentioning how it's being used as a full-time connector for a SATA or IDE drive. It's clearly not aimed at that market at all. This is a kit designed for rescue/ recovery operations of someone else's HDD. Case in point: me.
I wrecked the partition table of my primary work HDD. All in-situ attempts failed, so I brought the laptop home, mounted the HDD to my SATA cable kit, and ran the excellent TestDisk tool from Christophe Grenier. My partition table recovered, I wrote it to disk and bright the HDD back into the laptop. I'm back up and writing this from the work laptop now (don't say anything).
I would never look at this complex jumble of wires and adapters and think "well, I'll just hook it up and let it go for a few years". No, sorry, incorrect application, despite the instruction manual showing you how to do it. This is a stripped-down kit designed to travel with your rescue ops laptop when making a house call, like to Grandma's PC. I find it's easier to run virus scanning, defrag, etc when the HDD is controlled by my known-good laptop.
I withheld a fifth star because it's a complex mess of wires. I don't know how one could make it look elegant and preserve its functionality, but whoever can do it merits the fifth star. Wholly recommended product for rescue operations.

My scepticism was proven wrong !.......2008-01-12
I was a little sceptical about buying this product, as it seemed a little bit cheap and cheerful. However, the seller (EW Link) were good, and the item arrived within 2 days, and was well packaged.
Using the item is child's play. Simply plug in the supplied power supply to your old hard drive that you want to connect. Then plug the supplied ATA connector into the hard drive, and plug the other end into your USB port. Within seconds Windows XP recognised the drive. I was able to copy off the files I wanted and then start formatting the drive within about 2 minutes (no more than) of unpacking the goods.
The only downside (very minor) is that the USB-connected hard drive does occupy as much of the USB bandwidth as it can grab for itself when transferring files. As such, if you're still surviving on USB-connected ADSL modems then these will drop their connections whilst it's copying.
Overall, a nice bit of kit, and the seller proved to be very good.
Ifyou've got an old hard drive buy this........2007-11-25
I recently had to buy a new computer and soon aftre doing so I discovered this product. I now have the old 60gb internal drive attached to a USB port on my new computer, and it works a treat. I have extracted all the old data that I wanted to keep and reformatted the old drive, giving me the full 60gb extra space.
The adaptor has it's own power supply and a plug to go into the power socket on the IDE driver. There is a cable with an IDE connector one end and a USB connector the other, just plug it all in and off you go !!

It works.......2007-07-18
just to let anyone who wants to know this item converts an ide hard drive to take an sata cable to pop in your sata motherboard no more formatting and reinstalling of windows just registering it. It does however show as a Unknown device but it really does work. Unfortunatlety it does heat up you hard drive so you can only use it for about 1/2 an hour so i was jumping the gun a little apologies my suggestion buy a new hdd:-).

Gr8 Little Item.......2007-12-23
This is one gr8 little item to help with having many hard drives on one pc, i had a load of HDs and never had any spare slots now i have 2 TB :) because of this, its wonderful and easy to use just plug and play, delievery was fast and on time 2 :) overall im certainly happy with it *thumbs up* :).
Safety Hazard.......2007-12-08
This unit comes with a micro 3 pin plug on the mains lead which has no fuse. I bought two of these The first worked OK but the power supply ran and smelt very hot . The second just exploded when I plugged in the power unit. There are others of this type of unit available here with a better power supply costing only a few ponds more. Buy these and don't waste your money on this cheap version.
A superb gzimo :).......2007-10-31
I have been looking for a combined IDE/SATA device at a decent price for a while as I am often replacing or upgrading drives for friends, often with no spare IDE or SATA connections available on the PC to easily transfer data or the original disk image. Originally seen branded versions (such as Sabrant) for over double the price yet looking at the images they look identical. Having bought two I tested them by plugging a 60GB 2.5" IDE drive into one and a 250GB 2.5" SATA drive into the other. Plugged them both into USB2 ports on my laptop and powered the drives via the USB bus. The laptop did the usual 'Discovered a new device' and 'Your device is now ready' bit with no problem. I then transferred over 10GB of different sized files between the two drives and got the same transfer rate I expect when I connect in their external boxes to the laptop's USB2 ports. Additionally, they are so small and light, including the power supply box and even the mains plug, that it takes up little room in my laptop bag so I carry it all the time, just in case. For those with a need, I can well recommend it.
Very handy tool for data retrieval.......2007-10-20
The set consists of a 3 pin power adaptor (with a tiny plug to save space) feeding a power supply which powers either IDE thru a Molex connector or SATA through a supplied adaptor. Supplied also are data connectors to link the IDE or SATA hard drive with a USB port. Use this adaptor set to retrieve data from a hard drive when it is not mounted in a computer. I have used it successfully on two separate IDE hard drives (don't have a SATA drive to try), an older 5400 rpm Seagate and a newer Maxtor 7200 rpm model. Worked successfully using Windows XP and Linux 2.6, so I imagine it'll also work on a Mac.
really easy to use.......2007-09-11
This is a great little product so easy to use stripped down two machines took drives out pluged usb cable into my new machine power cable to open drive and passed all info onto new drives saved so much time great.
(money well spent)
