mine crashed!.......2007-12-10
I purchased one of these in April, not from Amazon, and it crashed in July for no obvious reason. I have lost all of the data transferred in those three months and have concerns about the security of the personal data on the disc. The retail outlet have told me that they safely dispose of all equipment. Of course they do! At least I am getting a refund.
Freecom UK did not even bother to respond to an e-mail of complaint.
I am now looking for another external drive but Amazon users reviews seem to indicate that all manufacturers have problems with products failing and permanent loss of data. Can I go back to a pencil and a piece of paper?

Dead on arrival and the Freecom UK support was terrible, ignoring phone calls, messages and emails to various departments. Finally had to write to the Euro HQ who kicked them up the backside and made them refund my money. Keep away from them. The warranty is worthless, and a promise is a comfort to a fool!

Just received today, easy to set up,fairly quiet in use and quite quick. Neat looking as well. Only GRIPE is that it comes with a 2 pin American type power lead...POOR SHOW AMAZON, if its sold for uk use it should have standard UK power lead
Superb quality, easy to set-up and use !.......2007-10-01
Excellent piece of kit, arrived quickly and in good order. Easy step by step pictorial instructions makes setting up a breeze and the drive was recognised by Windows XP straight away. The drive was originally set to FAT file system but this is easy to change to NTFS using 'quick format'. I've had this drive for a month and it has been faultless, all my family photos and videos are safely backed up on it, and it is almost as quick to retreive as items stored on the computer's main drive. Even though it gets left on for ages it doesn't get hot, it does get quite noticably warm, but never hot. The drive makes it really easy to swap big files between computers and it even works reasonably quickly via a USB 1 card, although USB 2 is obviously the prefered connection.
Overall this is super value, super quality, super easy to use, don't hesitate to buy !

The reason i am writing this review is to mention the fact that it runs cool, even after being left on for a couple of days and being constatly accessed.I had a ATMT before this Freecom. It had a fan and it ran very hot.

Does exactly what it says on the tin........2008-01-01
My Freecom 500GB Hard Drive does nothing. It just sits there silently, with a blue light on gathering the odd bit of dust. Occasionally, the blue light flickers as my iMac's Time Machine carries out an automatic back-up and that is as about as much excitement as the little silver box generates. That is, until I need to recover something, a deleted e-mail or an early version of a document or a much altered photo. Time Machine then takes me back to the day / date / time I am looking for, presents me with the desktop / application / document as it was then and, hey presto! my little Freecom 500GB Hard Drive delivers. An inconspicuous little gem of a plug and play storage device with huge capacity. Excellent value for money, highly recommended by this Mac user.
Software Glitch!.......2007-12-11
This is an excellent product which backs up all types of files quickly and easily. The 'Back-up' software worked perfectly. It also comes with 'User Interface' software which wouldn't recognise the device. Freecom were very helpful and advised me to uninstall the software and use the software update from the Freecom site. Neeedless to say this solved the problem.
So the moral is to always check that you have the most up-to-date version of any software (including the back-up software) before you begin the installation procedure.
Brilliant external hard drive.......2007-11-23
This is 4th Freecom drive and they are all really good, much better than any of the others. I got this for less than £85, in a certain high street catalogue store this drive is over £125.

I am very pleased with this item, it looks good, is quiet, is fast and was already in NTFS format. Good value for money.

I'm using this as a media drive on a mac running Elgato's EyeTV. It works great, extremely quiet because of the lack of fans, but not getting too hot despite hours of continual work. I got the metal cased one specifically to help with the cooling, which seems to be a good decision. Would definitely buy another.
