Not as good as my old Maxtor One Touch II.......2007-11-22
I bought this drive to replace my 300Gb Maxtor One Touch II--bought in January 2005--which had died despite using it only one day per month to back up the internal drive of my G4 iMac.
The new drive is a plain rectangular box; the old drive had pleasantly curved edges, much more attractive to look at. Fortunately it is hidden behind the computer so I don't see it.
The old drive came with Retrospect Express 6.0 back-up program. I just pressed the button on the front of the drive to back up the whole of my 80Gb internal drive to an 80Gb partition on the external drive. It took about an hour to do so, using a Firewire 400 connection. If my internal hard drive had ever failed, I could have started up off the external drive.
The new drive has Maxtor's own back-up program. You have to select the folders you want to back up. There does not seem to be any simple way to get it to back up the whole of your internal disc to provide an identical copy capable of starting up your computer. If your internal drive failed, you could use your start-up CD to access the files on the external drive but you could lose file or folders not backed up, especially invisible files.
I tried to install Restrospect on the new drive but the program would not recognise the new drive; it kept looking for the old drive. So I opened the Preferences folder and dragged out the Retrospect folder. The program then recognised the new drive so I made a complete back-up and checked that the iMac would start up off the external disc. I can now do my monthly back-ups as before.
I don't rely on the external drive as the only back up. I have two USB flash drives on the G4 and after I create a new file or update an existing file I back it up on both the flash drives using a brilliant little program called Switchback. It compares the contents of a folder on the hard disc with the contents of a similar folder on the flashdrive--it takes only 2 or 3 seconds to compare several hundred files in a folder--then displays a list of files to copy or update and backs them up in a split second.
Ever since I started with an Apple II in 1980 I have always backed up every file on either a second floppy disc or a micro disc or another hard drive soon after creating or updating the file. I have never ever lost a file. The Maxtor One-Touch II is the first hard drive that has ever died on me.
The one saving grace of my new drive is that it cost only half the amount I paid for the old drive. I'm sorry that it did not include the Retrospect program but I am not sorry that I bought the new drive for the peace of mind that if ever my internal drive fails I can start up off the external drive.

I agree with the above comment the supplied software is not great. However, when used with 'Norton Save and Restore' it is an entirely different story. This is an incredibly impressive and reliable combination. One can back up a disc image and store files and folders at the touch of a button. Restoring ones computer if data is lost or corrupted is equally effortless.Personally, I will never have to worry about lost files/software/settings etc ever again. I could not recommend this combination more highly.

Don't bother as an external drive it's OK but the software provided for automated backups is a complete waste of time had nothing but trouble contacted Maxtor and they are about as much use as thier software.

Maxtor III 1.5 TB let me down.......2007-11-21
Don't buy it and don't buy it from Amazon.
It seems that none of the discs supplied by Amazon and its partners work. You then go into a multiple round of returning this to Amazon and they sending you another one which again does not work. You are better off with the 1 TB version.
The reason that it does not work is that there are format problems and then the disc dies. Just read all the woes written on the internet by people who have bought this product via Amazon.
Not Amazon's fault but they seem incapable of realising the problem and then putting it right.

Mac file format to start with, difficult to use on Windows.......2007-09-21
Despite some positive reviews from other customers I found on the Internet, I actually had bad experience with this particular hard drive.
Firstly, please be aware that this hard drive comes with Mac file format, not Windows, which I didn't know when placing my order with Pixmania, as online description doesn't highlight this. Therefore unlike other external hard drives I bought in the past, it doesn't work straight from the box with Windows OS.
I then have to install the software onto my Windows XP system. As I haven't got a Firewire 800 connection in my PC (and Firewire 800 is the only cable supplied with this hard drive), I used USB to connect it to my computer. However my computer couldn't recognize the drive at all. It doesn't show up in the "Device Manager" or "Windows Explorer". I actually tried it with my laptop and my friend's computer as well, none could recognize the hard drive.
I'm not sure if the particular drive I got was faulty, or whether there're software problems etc, anyway I've already sent it back for refund. Personally, I think having to install software before it can be recognized by the system is definitely not convenient. Secondly, in the Windows-dominated market, I don't know why this product is pre-formatted in Mac file format. The technical specifications didn't hightlight this, otherwise I probably wouldn't have bought it in the first place (to save possible hassles later).
Again, this could be a rare/individual case, but just to make prospective buyers aware of the possible problems you might get with this drive.
