Just the job.......2007-08-09
Plugged this into a free PCI slot in my WinXP Pro machine, was recognised straight away no problems.
USB PCI card.......2007-03-07
I agree with the other review here.
Upon 1st installation XP didnt detect the card properly and existing components plugged into the usb ports didnt work despite loading the supplied driver disk. That said I un-installed all usb hardware in device manager and rebooted the P/C and when it restarted XP re-allocated everthing including the card. All works ok now and represents superb value for money.
I would however warn that if I wasn't P/C literate then I would have probably returned the card assuming it was faulty.
Rough start, but got there in the end.......2006-11-23
When I first installed the card and booted XP, it gave me nothing but problems as it seemed to clash with the usb 1.1 ports built into my machine. So I cleared the drivers for the both the pci card and the built-in ports, I rebooted and allowed XP to sort itself out, it works perfectly now.
No hassle USB2!!.......2006-04-08
I am by no means a computer expert.I bought this USB2 card to increase the amount of USB ports on my pc,and USB2 being the logical step forward. When i received the card i followed the instructions enclosed, which i must add were very simple and easy to follow. The card took about 10 mins to install, turned on my computer, the computer then installed it all for me!!.
No hassle,no problems.
Cheap but great........2005-09-28
This PCI card provides a cheap way of adding USB2 connectability to your PC. I have found no problems with it at all. It installed correctly first time (this is the first time I have ever added internal hardware to my PC) and my Windows XP Professional PC installed it automatically without me having to use to supplied CD or even click anything. If you are looking just to add USB2 connectability to your PC but think this USB2 card looks too cheap to be any good, don't worry - it is good - buy it!
The picture of the USB2 card looks like it is different in size/shape from other USB2 cards available but it is just the angle that the photo is taken from which makes it look like this.

Excellent Price for 8GB! and Sturdy!.......2008-01-11
Spot on USB memory stick, excellent price for 8GB (I remember the days when USB memory use to cost a fortune!). Feels solid compared to some other USB sticks out there. My laptop recognised the additional storage straight away when plugged in. Can't fault it, thanks!

My rating so far.......2008-01-11
I'm very careful with my things but because its thin and stands vertically, i accidentally knocked it over. Now all my data is lost and i have to pay £50-£100 to retrieve my data. I'm going to go for the Freecom tough drive now. It's more expensive but at least there's a less chance of it breaking... Im so gutted!...
(previous review) I've had no problems with this drive so far, but i am weary having heard these mixed reviews.
My drive is actually very quiet and doesn't vibrate my desk like one unfortunate customer was complaining about(maybe he needs to question the desk).
To be safe i'm going to keep my journey's with it to a minimum - especially when i'm traveling in the hectic city of London.
If u want something portable, look elsewhere. If you want simple and value for money, this is a good option.
What I really want is a 500GB shock-resistant water-proof bluetooth usb memory stick, but i guess beggars can't b choosers!
Noisy stuff, huge vibrations.......2008-01-11
This thing makes all my desk vibrate. Good as a sexual toy, bad as a hard drive...
External Hard Drives.......2008-01-10
The following is not just against the WD device it appears under - it covers all external hard drives.
I have just decided to buy an external Hard Drive to back up my computer. However reading a lot of the reviews on ALL the offerings, this would not appear to be too wise - the number of reports of failures/loss of data is staggering - not just WD but all the manufacturers seem to be similar with what sounds like head crashes and random file/disk corruption.
The only answer seems to be to go for a RAID device (can get a 250Gb x 2 for about £180) as the only way to guarantee that you will (almost) always be able to recover data. While this is expensive compared with the single drive: as one of the other correspondents says - £70 is expensive for a paper weight and if you've lost priceless data as well because of the failure, it doesn't seem that the extra £100 is really too much.
Also, I note that several people have said that windows can see the drive but cannot access it. Atlastsolutions.com have a help page which gives apparently very useful recovery information for this problem. I have pasted it below and it would appear to avoid the £1000+++ cost of data recovery that Seagate appear to charge for their single drives (even though the data loss is their fault in the first place) though still not free. I've not seen a figure for what WD charge - they seem to think that all you can do is have a new one from one or two of the reports I've read. I'm also surprised at Amazon - they must be having disproportionate aggro for this type of product as it seems to be running at about 30% returns, some of which are multiple. I would have thought they had the weight now to influence the manufacturers into significant improvements. Note also that some of the people who say don't buy WD because of this failure problem suggest you buy Seagate or LaCie or whoever. If you go to the other Seagate or LaCie or whoever reviews you find that the people who have had problems with those recommend you don't buy theirs but go to one of the others such as WD! The message I'm getting is don't buy ANY of them until the mannufacturers get their acts together.
If one of the other manufacturers reads this and disagrees, then I would respond by saying - OK, I will buy your product PROVIDING that you will guarantee that if it fails you will recover all of the data on the disk, reload a replacement and return it to me within a week, free of charge. If it cannot be recovered you will re-imburse me at full value for all of the data lost. If they can't or won't offer that, after what I have read, I'm not interested in any of the single drive devices.
The entry in the help sheet from Atlastsolutions.com is as follows - hope someone benefits from it:
Quote:
Occasionally customers contact us saying that their external disk doesn't work, for example Windows reports that the disk is unaccessible or corrupt. Although it appears in Windows with a drive letter, nothing can be read or written to the disk.
What has probably happened is that the File System has been lost or destroyed. The File System is a section of the disk that holds all the information about the contents of the disk. It has the list of filenames on the disk and where they are located. If it gets corrupted then the files are almost certainly still on the disk, but cannot be seen by Windows. To get the files back you will need to run a disk recovery utility, which will bypass the File System and will scan the surface of the disk looking for the files. If you search Google you can find multitudes of products and services, and a couple we have seen that are worth trying are:
File Scavenger®
GetDataBack
[We have nothing to do with these products, we have just seen them recommended in independent reviews. Although they will analyse your disk free of charge, they require payment to retreive the lost files ($45 - $79)]
If these utilites cannot find anything, it means your data is probably lost. The next step would be to reformat the disk. See our Disk Format Tutorial. We recommend not choosing "quick format", to make sure the whole disk is exercised.
If you cannot format the disk, it would indicate there is a hardware problem, and it would need to be returned. Just contact us for returns information.
Why did I loose my data?
A File System is only likely to be corrupted if there is an interruption to the data flow while writing to the disk. If the disk is connected to your running PC and you just pull out (or dislodge) the power or USB lead this could cause corruption. See the section on "Disconnecting the External Disk" below.
A power spike could pass through the mains power supply to the disk, so its always best to use a power "surge protector" with your PC and External Disks/DVDs. We sell suitable products by Belkin, a 5-Way Surge Protector and 6-Way PureAV Home Theater Surge Protector.

computer will not recognise it.......2008-01-20
This was a present for my wife and I have just spent 6 hours trying to get it installed on a HP, Sony and then an IBM thinkpad. The set up is rubbish and none of the computers will recognise the device. I have carried out every action suggested on their web site, all to no avail. I wish I had never seen the damn thing. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Mine must have been a bad one then.......2008-01-17
I had one of these - it is now in the bin.
The sound produced was okay and the buttons easy to press without accidently pressing anything else but on the way down side: the power button only one in every ten times turned the thing off and as for random play / shuffle - it just couldn't do it. I wont be buying anything made by Philips again as I have had two of their Freeview boxes mess up on me!
Beter than an Ipod.......2007-11-28
this PhilipsSA3124/02 mp4 player is fab!! i love it! had it for about a month now and its awesome! i have an ipod nano aswell but trust me this PhilipsSA3124/02 is way better! because you can use windows media player with it and its alot better for the money. awesome. if you want a good mp4 player then get this trust me.
Excellent Value.......2007-11-22
I've had my Philips SA3124/02 MP3 player now for about 2 months and it's superb.
It's very easy to use, with the menu system being one of the best I've seen. You can randomize your playlist or play tracks in order.
The graphic equalizer lets you chose from a number of settings.
Transferring music is simple and can be done using Windows Media Player or you can just drag and drop the music files.
It has a 2GB memory which is good for about 500 tracks.
The sound is good, although the supplied bud headphones aren't the best so I invested in some better ones (makes a big difference). The unit charges via the USB connector and the battery lasts 10 hours plus.
The screen is okay for watching films and will deal with widescreen.
A+ would definitely recommend.
Don't be fooled by the i-Pod, they are expensive and you have to deal with i-Tunes which is a nightmare.
for the price - great.......2007-10-24
I am very pleased with the Philips player - the sound it great - although I did decide to invest in Bose headphones in the end which naturally make the world of difference, but better to do that than spend a fortune on a player that you may be disappointed in, the headphones make it. the radio sounds brilliant - although the reception will vary as you move around which is only to be expected.
Wish I could work out how to delete the songs I am fed up with though - I shall persevere - there must be a way.

Compatibility Issues.......2008-01-01
Got mine from another vendor but I have to agree with the comments from other reviewers regarding the FAT-32 file size limitation and file locking. My own problem was that, try as I might, I simply could not get 2 Vista machines to access the drive across an Ethernet connection. The drive was 'seen' by the computers but the (bundled) Freecom setup software wouldn't allow me to access the drive over TCP/IP because it (wrongly) persisted in telling me that either my network card(s) or my router didn't have DHCP enabled when they both did.
Not much of a network drive.......2007-11-08
Does not support file locking, all uses on the network can open the same file at the same time, with each making different changes, result *****! Also do not believe the picture, you CAN NOT conect USB and LAN at the same time
Limited to FAT32 format when used as network drive, no NTFS.......2007-10-09
I bought one of these (not from Amazon) but had to return it as it can only be used as a network (Ethernet connection) drive when formatted as FAT32.
This means that file size is limited to 4GB, not enough for my backup files (I use the MS Windows Backup which makes one big file per backup) and possibly not for some large movie files too.
If formatted as NTFS it can accomodate larger file sizes, but can only be connected via USB, not Ethernet.
If the FAT32 file size limit is not a problem for you I suppose it is an OK drive, but as a USB NTFS-format drive there are others offering better value for money.
A similar comment has been posted for Freecom's 500GB network drive by another user.

Mac compatible..........2007-11-17
I bought this for the firewire connection as I do a small amount of video editing. I've now used it to back-up two Mac's whilst installing Leopard and having firewire is SO much faster than USB. Very easy to use and can be instantly changed between machines. No problems so far in the 6-7 months I've owned it(apart from the limit of my own knowledge in partitioning drives!). Runs cool too. Which is nice! ; D
Bulky and ultimately short lived - NOT recommended!.......2007-11-15
I've been using this hard drive on and off for 7 months, its now frozen and is unable to power up. Apart from being bulky, cumbersome and far from a design classic, its now died after what I feel is an unacceptably short period of use.
Problems with Software.......2007-10-07
I have also purchased this external hard drive, but the larger 500GB. It works well, albeit it does get warm when running for some time. Problem I have is that I've lost the backup software that came with the Hard Drive, so now I am unable to backup using the enclosed software. I think the software got lost when my C Drive crashed recently. Does anyone know how I can retrieve this software?
Back up your WD hard drive!.......2007-07-27
I thought this would be a great help and enable me to keep using my old imac. We used the drive for about a month and put 7gb of stuff on, mainly college work such as essays and documentation of projects for fine art degrees. Then one day upon turning on the computer the my book icon had disappeared from the desktop. None of the leads had been touched, everything had been done by the book as instructed. We contacted a computer wizard and got the icon back only to find that the drive was COMPLETELY EMPTY!!!!!!!! We tried everything we could to retrieve the data, it just didn't exist anymore. We tried various recommended(by WD tech help)data recovery programs to no avail. I contacted various data retrieval companies but found the charges expensive,£300 plus! One company had a couple of WD my book on the bench when I spoke to him, he said it wasn't uncommon for them to crash in this way. So if you do buy one make sure you back up which kind of makes it useless I guess.
Great back up stoarge.......2007-06-30
Very good bit of kit, small and solid, had it for about a month works fine even after a hard knock when it was dropped on the floor. I found the provided software a bit pointless but not essential as you can use other software with it. Overall the drive is very versatile/flexable in what you can use it for and how you decide to use it.
A big thankyou to other reviewers which helped me in my choice of this drive.
