Product Description
Wireless N Gigabit Router:
The D-Link DIR-655 Wireless N Gigabit Router is an 802.11n (Draft 1.0) compliant device that delivers real world performance of up to 650% faster than an 802.11g wireless connection and also faster than 100Mbps wired Ethernet. By connecting the DIR-655 router to a cable or DSL modem, users will be able to share their high-speed Internet access with everyone on the network and create a secure wireless network to share photos, files, music, video, printers and network storage throughout their home.
High-performance:
The DIR-655 features the fastest processor in the RangeBooster N? range, achieving ever higher throughput results between WAN and LAN networks.
Combined with the acclaimed QoS StreamEngine, this allows the DIR-655 to provide a better Internet experience by keeping Internet phone calls and online gaming smooth and responsive.
In addition, the router includes four Gigabit Ethernet switch ports for highest transfer speeds to other Gigabit capable devices such as a network attached storage device.
Wireless LAN Intelligent Stream Handling (WISH) technology:
The DIR-655 router includes Quality of Service (QoS), wirelessly as well as to and from the Internet (StreamEngine). It features WISH, which enhances the consumer's experience for gaming, HDTV and other media applications over a wireless connection by minimizing the disruptive effects of competing traffic on the wireless network. It automatically detects if audio, video or gaming content is being used on the wireless network and gives these applications priority over less time-sensitive traffic such as email or file transfers. It then adjusts priorities on the fly to ensure media content is transmitted without jitter or lag.
Furthermore, the router enforces a "good neighbour" policy, ensuring that it will not create interference for neighbouring networks. This is achieved by reducing the amount of radio spectrum used when detecting a legacy 802.11g/b network in the vici

Good.......2007-11-13
the above device gives you everything that you... however yes their is a problem with the PPPoA. somehow it just does not recognise this configuration on my comp either. however all set aside the device is magnificent. my reinds house is around 75 meters away from mine and still i get a connection =) ..... good buy and easy to set up even for the first time buyers.
you do need to make sure however that you have a descent adapter if your going wireless... thats probably why some of you are having trouble receiving through walls.... hmmm somehow i find odd with having 6 walls and still letting me in with a 300mbg transfer rate.
the device is great.. awsome looks with its alienwear look alike grin. good product.
Pathetic.......2007-11-03
Oh this is great if you set it up right next to your computer but the range of this is really really poor. Basically, you can get a great transfer rate but if you got more than one wall between your computer and the router forget it.
My computer is within 10m of this thing and the range sucks. I went back to my trusty Linksys - I might only get 54mbps but at least I get a signal.
If you still want to buy this junk then look out for mine on e-bay/Amazon as soon as I finish packing it up.
Sooooo FAST.......2007-10-27
Set up: Its simply a case of plugging it in and running the setup CD. Even with my forgetting to turn the modem off and on again the whole thing was up and running in no more than 5 minutes.
Ease of use: I've yet to explore the settings in full but suffice to say they are what you would expect from a £100 router. I was quite happy to find this is the first router ive ever used that didnt require some kind of tweaking to open any ports to use with bitorrent.
Performance: This is the DIR655's trump card. I bought it because CNET and Tom's Hardware reckoned it to be the fastest 802.11n router they'd ever tested and it supports more multiple connections than any other home router too [i.e it wont overheat/crash if you use torrents]. So far i have been seeing wireless download speeds between 5 and 10 times faster than my old Belkin 54g could muster. Coupled with a Netgear WN311T PCI adapter it sits happily connected at between 250mb and 300mb with about 20m and 2 walls to pass through, and will easily match wired transfer speeds on my 20mb cable connection.
Dont be alarmed by the reviewer's poor rating below me. This is a wireless router, NOT a wireless modem router and it says nowhere in its description that it is. So long as you understand what you are getting you wont be disappointed.
For cable connections only!!.......2007-10-19
Be warned, that this router is unlikey to work with standard DSL connections and is only meant for cable connections (such as Virgin). It does not support PPPoA WAN connection (only PPPoE) which means that if you have a DSL conection then you will be unlikely to be able to use this router.
You need one of these!.......2007-06-14
With Virgin Media upgrading their broadband service to 20mbit my old Linksys BEFSR41 was in need of replacement!
The Linksys unit only has a 10mbit Internet port (the LAN side being 100mbit), even so I could only max 6mbit Internet to LAN (WAN to LAN). Take a close look at any router you have in mind for speeds over 10mbit Internet, most of the reviews I found in this price range show that on the bench they don't perform.
After much searching I found a review of the DIR-655, I didn't want wireless but for the price it does exactly what I need, that being:
Gigabit LAN ports (ignore the outer packaging which claims 10/100!?!)
A Gigabit WAN port (for when we go 100+)
Dual firewalls, SPI and NAT
Other features included something about 300mbit wireless if you like that sort of thing, I'm not using it currently but all the right options are there WPA etc. Configuration was easy (on XP) the provided CD does the basics for you and it's up and working, I would recommend reviewing the settings afterward as it does not set admin passwords etc.
In summary a good buy, I'm maxing out my 20mbit connection with the firewall functions enabled. The build quality is excellent and there are more advanced functions than I'll every use.

Very Good.......2007-12-24
I bought this to replace my old USR router that had decided it wanted to retire from service, had a look at a few routers and to be honest couldn't make my mind up, so for some reason went for the router that had no reviews at the time, I've now had it about 6 months and i'm very impressed, setting it up was a piece of cake, getting it to work with my works VPN client took a few minutes but that is the same with most routers.
Its been up solidly for that time and has never flinched. The only slightly annoying thing with it is the connected LED on the front that flashes when its connected to the internet, that was fixed with the ad of a couple of black sticky black spots! The wireless strength seemd to be very good. I can pick up signal everywhere in the house and the garden whichis allyou need, and I haven't got N cards in my laptop or desktop.
I would recommend this to anyone, infact i did, and he bought one!

Belkin N modem router.......2007-12-31
I bought it thinking it will have better coverage and speed than my G D-Link, This set up was very easy and was up running within 5 minutes but the coverage is worse than my G D-Link and connections breaks up now and again. Do not go for glossy diagrams showing the coverage flowing out of your house , this one sometimes do not give signals next room. I am going to return it and take out D-Link 624T which is much much better in signal strength and connectivity
Excellent.......2007-12-17
Plugged it with xbox, pc and wireless laptops work straight away. easy setup, range is really good, works in very large house with not a problem in any room or the garden
A waste of money........2007-07-30
I bought one of these & it doesn't work. First of all the setup assistant software could not find it, so I unplugged everything, plugged my old modem back in, then downloaded the updated file from the Belkin site. The new setup assistant partly worked, but obviously does not like BT Broadband (my ISP) as it would not configure. I have contacted BT about the appropriate settings & they were very helpful. Belkin were not, all they could suggest was that I phone their helpline (premium rate & more money wasted)as I have been caught out like this before & wasn't prepared to waste more time & money, I didn't bother. Needles to say I will not be buying any Belkin products again.
My advice is buy at your own risk!
XBOX LIVE - non compliance.......2007-06-23
Product works great as a wireless router and as a wired router. After hours on the helpdesks of belkin, BT and Xbox i have never been able to get onto Xbox live. It's now gathering dust under the stairs and i've gone for a linksys. Great if you don't like Xbox.
Works well but a couple of wrinkles.......2007-06-19
I bought one of these and had it set up and running in non secure mode in under half an hour.
At first I couldn't access the security setup pages, despite a call to the Belkin helpdesk. I found by trial and error that there's something on these pages which is blocked by my Norton Privacy settings.
Having fixed that I'm very pleased with the range and connection speed. Definitely recommend.

PLEASE Don't Buy This Router!!.......2008-01-17
I bought this router only a year and a half ago, but already I am having to buy a new one. Only a month or 2 after buying it, I noticed that it got hot VERY quickly, and within half a year, I was having to turn it off overnight once a week because it got too hot to function any more. Last week, it finally gave up the ghost, for the wireless side of things at least. I assume that it fried its circuit board because the thing gets roasting hot!! At least it still works over LAN (Always look on the bright side!)
Now going to invest in a Netgear router because I cant be bothered with Belkin anymore, all I've had is problems with this one!
Hope this helps people!
Doesn't work with BT Broadband.......2007-11-27
Bought this router.
Spent 1 week trying to get it to work...
Configuration was fine.
Lot's of phone calls to BT.
Took it back, bought Linksys adsl/router instead.
Linksys worked straight away.
You do the math.
I hope this helps people!!.......2007-10-27
Ok.. i know what i'm doing with these things lots of practice at home and work etc, but for everyone out there who isn't sure.. this could end in tears...
2 hours and its all working fine, it should have taken 10mins thou!!!
Its seems that Belkin in their infinite wisdom have supplied slightly dodgy drivers (version 1) for the wireless card(dongle) so...
SET UP ----
router - 2mins to set up very easy and so far works without any problems and issues so far ....
The wireless dongle.. OMG!!! - 2 hours!!
My advice is (if you buy it) go to the belkin website and download the version 4 drivers for the 7050 card (which is what you get in this pack) install that and it works very easily!!! I had to remove the registry keys that the Belkin software put there itself that were wrong!! I know you shouldn't have to do this, but the hardware works fine and most of the reviewers complains are due to this driver issue!
Thus - 4 stars .. 5 for the product -3 for the stupidity of Belkin! if you have understood the problem that i've had with the installation.. its quite a good router really!!!
If you have no clue and are completely new to routers DO NOT BUY if you have no one to help you!! Frustration and tears and ultimately sending it back to amazon await!
Poor quality.......2007-08-26
As previously attested look elsewhere when buying a new wireless router. I encounter numerous freezes, lockouts and the router needs constant re-booting. My old BT router was far more reliable than this and in hindsight I should have bought a Netgear router. Avoid like the plague!
Doesn't stay connected.......2007-08-02
Well...it works, but not very well. If you like downloading stuff or talking in chat rooms or using things like MSN then in my experience this will be absolutely useless for you. On websites like YouTube I'm lucky if it loads up more than 10 seconds of each video. It's also a PAIN to install.

Read this before you buy.......2007-11-29
If all you are doing is transferring the kids' homework, then fine. I use my laptop for work. The programme crashed 7 times, each time about 1 hour in, so it's a bit frustrating. Not as much as Belkin's call centre; so far out in the sticks of the Ganges delta that I had to apologise into the sounds on the phone after asking the first operative to repeat himself several times and hang up, to try again, so I could understand 1 word. I mean it, not 1 word was understood. 2nd call to the non-network option told me I needed the network option. 3rd call to the network option said I needed the non-network option. 4th call to the network option couldn't help. WHAT? CAN'T HELP? If you've got a problem, you're on your own - believe me. I'm going to do this with a stack of CDRs. Thanks for nothing, Belkin, you've made a toy, not a tool.
Superb product.......2007-11-08
This is a brilliant product, the installation was so simple and the data transfer was excellent.
Can't belive it transferred all my emails and internet passwords and favlurites.
All done in a few minutes.
have recommended it to others.
Easy Transfer ?.......2007-08-31
Having read the positive reviews and purchased a Belkin "Cable". I can only agree with S.James. I did get it to work by following enclosed "instructions"
i.e. loading it onto my XP laptop - to transfer files to new Vista desktop - but wound up totally frustrated at speed of transfer. My solution was to use Sandisk 4GB Cruzer drive - great bit of kit !
Easy Transfer, just as it says on the tin.......2007-07-27
Having found that my local computer store will not stock this item as they "do not trust it", I was very pleasantly surprised how quickly and efficiently this item worked. It is very flexible so you can transfer all files or (as in my case) only some of the files, which included lots of pictures and music. If computer owners find that this product difficult to use, then they should get professional help and not blame Belkin.
Worked Perfectly.......2007-06-28
Very pleased with this item. No download from internet required and it linked the Vista laptop with XP laptop easily after loading software into the XP laptop. Transfer slow but worth wait, 2000 iTunes songs transferred in about 1.5 hours. Highly recommended, there are few other easy options out there.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing Product.......2007-09-10
Installed the CD and plugged in the card it started to work.
Just need to restart the system once. That is it!!!!!!!
Works very well with the BT Home HUB.
Try a better make !.......2007-09-09
This card wasted a day of our life and caused grief and misery before we got it working.
The card itself works well and is worth 5 stars, but the software is worth ZERO stars. Eventually we realised the card couldn't find the router simply because the Belkin software was rubbish, then things quickly improved. We simply disabled the Belkin software and set up the card using Windows XP SP2 and its now working fine.
So my advice is...choose another make unless you enjoy brain pain!
Works well.......2007-08-05
Installed OK from clear albeit brief instructions. Works with Linksys WAG residential gateway (modem/router). Why not 5 stars? - the design means it sticks out about an inch, rather than the more normal slightly shorter onesm so have to unplug it to get the laptop in the bag.
Just Works.......2007-07-14
It's black so it will blend in with a black laptop if you have one. I connect by wi-fi to my Netgear router with no problem. Just had to set WEP to on in the router control panel settings. Then edit my wireless connection settings on my laptop to use the "passphrase" that I chose.
easy peasy.......2007-02-17
I know very little about computers and was apprehensive about this purchase but the whole process went smoothly - slotted the card in and followed the instructions. Now my daughter can surf CBBC on her old laptop whilst I am researching on the net on my new laptop; and we can choose which room is most comfortable to sit in to do this (not the lounge if dad is watching TV, and not the same room if one of us is on a noisy web site!)
This has been a good purchase for us.

I had my doubts as to whether or not to order this as it dosn't make it clear that this is a mains power device which was what I wanted.
I plugged it in it connected straight away,it has a nice solid feel the 4 grn LCDs only illuminate when in use so its easy to see if your periferals are connected. I have always found Belkin good.

Dont Lose Your CD or It`ll Become a Paperweight........2008-01-17
My Boss asked me to reinstall his laptop, and my boss being the way he is, he`s not kept any driver CDs.. That shouldnt be a problem for a fairly modern day Laptop. That is until you try and install this unit via the belkin website drivers.. None of them will install this unit. The utilities Load fine, but pop in the adapter and it starts looking for the driver, reporting back None can be Found.. This is while the Utility install is asking you to plug in the adapter... this is twice now in 2 days ive had a nightmare with belkin.. and im a big fan .. or was.. Now i know my boss had this working before the reinstall so the CD must have different drivers on them.. So my advice is, dont lose that CD!
there are cheaper and better.......2008-01-09
I had trouble with this right from the start and it continued temperamental and flaky. In the end I called it a day and bought an alternative; Pluscom which is less than half the price and so far does the business impeccably
Avoid this one.......2007-12-29
I bought the Belkin to replace my ageing Intel Anypoint adaptor as I was looking to upgrade my network security from WEP to WPA-PSK.
Immediately I started getting Blue Screens and system crashes after installing this adaptor. Whilst I did manage to get it to connect to my Router I then found it needed to be coaxed into connecting each time the PC booted up.
Don't mess around with this one it really is a false economy.
AOL users Beware.......2007-12-26
I had this product bought for me for Christmas and it went back to the shop as soon as they were open.. If you use AOL it wont work as they have a mega bucks deal with Netgear and Speedtouch. It's not the first time I've had problems with Belkin so I will not be buying anything from them again..
Inferior product.......2007-12-22
I bought this adapter to replace my Netgear WG111v2, which had been lost. I have had nothing but problems.
-Awful signal. Networks that had previously been 4 bars went down to 1, or sometimes no connection at all.
-Bad drivers. Belkin's Mac driver refused to even recognize the presence of the hardware. On Windows, it reported "Limited or No Connectivity" on bootup, and needed to be Repaired from the Network Connections control panel.
