Fantastic - something that actually works with Windows Vista! Connected up my old Psion Series 5 with no problems, unlike everything else I've tried to get working on Microsoft's latest operating system, which appears to have either not been tested at all, or purposely designed so that you have to buy all new hardware and software! Definitely deserves five stars.

Installing drivers a nightmare.......2006-09-16
This cable works, and I can upload and download routes to my GPS and see my position on a map. The price is good, but if you can afford it spend more money for better support.
I am giving this two stars because installing the drivers was a nightmare. No CD was supplied. The drivers on the Manhattan web site use a different chip set (Profilic), and there were about 4 to try. I then got the vendor ID from USB identifier in the device manager, looked this up (6547 - ArkMicro) and went to their web site. However I couldn't see where to download the drivers from. I then signed up (expecting spam) to driverguide.com and got the drivers from there. The drivers recognized the hardware, but didn't work. I then had to allow the drivers to run without them being signed, so goodness knows what this is doing to my system integrity.

The item information here on Amazon and the item description on the manufaturers website state that it has a FEMALE serial connector - it doesn't! They appear to have changed item spec's and it now ships with a male serial connector and NO adaptor in the pack. Be sure this is what you want before ordering.
Minor note: the included driver, needed for Windows XP use, ships on a mini-CD and these CDs should NOT be used in certain slot-loading optical drives - better to download the current driver from Targus's website.

I bought this cable to go with a Garmin GPS serial cable. The only problem was that the drivers were on one of those mini CD-ROMs, which my laptop's drive won't take. The cable will not work without the drivers!
Go to Targus's website and follow the links down to this product and you can quickly download the neccessary files for free - phew! (But it doesn't tell you this in the instruction book)

I can't say I'm a great fan of NewLink products having had numerous items by them that were either non-functional out of the box or, overall totally rubbish.
This unit however is extremely well made and worked perfectly from the box.
I was using it to connect an old serial only Brother pattern transfer unit for an embroidery machine to a new laptop without a serial port - it has worked perfectly from day one.
