I use this for home cinema, and to play mp3 via ipod and media centre. The number of inputs is good. I use optical for media center coax for dvd and direct 3.5mm for the ipod. It works great for all 3. The 2x stero is good.
The Sub is huge so you need somewhere to hide it. when it arrived the box was twice the size I expected.

Bought these about one month ago. Arrived in great condition and on time, (well done Amazon). Been listening to music and dvd's none stop, the sound is superb.
I thought the background hiss i kept reading about would be a problem but it wasn't at all, if it bothers you that much just play some music!!
They made me change my soundcard as i wanted the best sound out of them possible and so got a new Soundblaster Audigy 4 so i could hook up the optical input, and what a difference it makes. Great speakers, amazingly good price for value, look fantastic, and you have the option to drown anyones' music out!! 5 out of 5 easily!!!

I was looking to upgrade my surround sound speaker system for my gaming set-up, as I had just bought a Xbox 360. I have looked around, at many other systems but these ones seemed to be perfect for my needs.
When then the speakers arrived (a couple of days earlier than Amazon said, kudos!) I was overcome by the sheer size of the box, the delivery man was similarly out of breath :P
I opened up the packaging, which took several minutes, to notice that the satellite speakers were significantly larger and heavier than my previous ones. The size of the sub was unbelievable, aswell as the weight!
As I was setting them up, I noticed that the speaker cable that was supplied isn't the greatest (it is very thin, probably reducing the quality of the signal since this is a powerful system), also it is quite short, the rear satellite cable isn't long enough for my requirements...this can be sorted by purchasing some new cable.
Once I had connected up the speakers, via the optical TOSlink, to my Xbox 360 I noticed a slight "white noise" when the speakers are turned on, but with no signal being sent to the satellites. This isn't much of an issue, but if you leave the system switched on, whilst watching TV etc you will notice it.
I started by testing out different types of music, at low volumes so as to not damage the amp as it was being "run-in". The clarity and range of the satellites is second to none, with no distortion on a digital input, even at maximum volume. The subwoofer is by far the most impressive piece of the whole system. I set it at minimum setting and put some Hip Hop music on.....WHOA! The bass was so powerful and consistant that my door actually moved! I would suggest placing it on a block of some sort of noise insulator/displacer underneath the sub because the sound really does reverberate down stairs.
As for modes and effects for each type of media, I would suggest:
-Stereo x2 for music
-Pro Logic 2 (movie) for films
-Dolby Digital for Computer games
If you are looking for something a bit more spectacular in your home cinema or just for your PC, look no further! The THX certification is well earned and the speakers are 100% faultless.

these speakers are pretty good i wanted something powerful but at a good price and thats what i got. these are some of the best pc speakers ever im using an onboard sound card and there is no buzzin from the speakers at all. great speakers and everyone should own one :-)

turned the supplied backets around which allowed me to wall mount the 5 main speaker, put the sub on the floor and connected to my xbox 360 using a fibre optic (not supplied) and I was blown away...... much better than I expected.. good all round sound...
Used a standard 3.5mm cable connect to my pc and media player and this works very well.... was slighly confused by the lengths of cable supplied for the speakers (3 long and 2 short?!?!.. surely the surround units are the furthest away in most cases?!)... but this was a minor thing...
Great all round sound used in my games room... may be ok for a main system also depending on what you are looking for... loads of power and very good solid build quality (the box they come in is huge and weighs a tonne)....

How can you say it has good sound quality?.......2007-07-30
Upon first listen I noticed a buzzing sound coming from both speakers. This sound is loud enough to be heard when quiet music is played and drives me nuts when I pause music. I can hear it buzzing away at the otherside of the room. Maybe it's a fault in my unit due to Sony's cheap and nasty components. Sony have really gone downhill over the years.
However, what isn't a fault, is the poor and muffled sound you get from Sony Hi-Fi's. I thought it was due to low treble but even with that turned up it just doesn't sound right. Compared to my old Philips speakers they just don't sound clear. Maybe all these 5 star reviews are from teens who don't know much about sound or just don't care. I'm no audiophile but I certainly have standards and this is the worst hi fi I have ever bought.
If you think this sytem sounds good then you've never heard a quality High Fidelity system...

This product is excellent quality and does everything you could
expect of it - and much more unecessary stuff besides. If
anything it's rather too complicated.
Getting it to mark track numbers correctly is an absolute
nightmare; gaps between tracks and sound levels have to be just
right or it gets confused. Correcting track marks later is
unecessarily difficult and requires much re-reading of the
destructions (sorry, instructions).

I will keep it short, this unit provides superb looks, functionality, excellent build quality and above all clear and precise sound.
I bought this unit to reduce the space taken by my seperates hi fi and have been absolutely delighted by its performance. Not the cheapest but certainly top draw.

Got this for my 18th and am chuffed to bits.
Simple, easy to use and has perfect sound quality.
The functions are easy to find and operate.
The speakers handle bass and treble well, with long cables attached.
If you want a stereo, just get this one basically :)
