Product Description
The Nikon Coolpix P5100 is the new flagship model in the Nikon Coolpix lineup designed to satisfy photography enthusiasts. Built on a custom application of Nikons innovative EXPEED digital image processing concept and incorporating the precision optics of a Nikkor lens the Coolpix P5100 is built to realize optimum performance and maximum image quality. Class-leading imaging ability begins with a full 12.1 effective megapixels of sharp resolution and a new digital image processing engine that reproduce the finest details and subtlest tones with precision and clarity even when taking advantage of sensitivity settings as high as ISO 3200. (ISO 3200 is available only for image sizes of 5 megapixels [2592 x 1944] or smaller.) It also includes the compositional freedom of the 3.5x Zoom-Nikkor lens and compatibility with various converter lenses that further extend wide-angle and telephoto reach. In addition to a variety of automated and scene modes four advanced exposure modes offer both enthusiasts and more advanced photographers greater personal control over the camera. ------The Mode dial provides easy access to these modes reflecting the Coolpix P5100s logical design that works to simplify and streamline operation for the photographer. Optical lens shift VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization counteracts the effects of camera shake in lower light or when shooting unsteady subjects to help achieve sharper results. Active full time it also stabilizes images displayed on the 2.5-inch high-resolution LCD monitor with wide 170-degree viewing angle for easier framing and more reassured shooting. The quality-crafted body is made of solid magnesium alloy (Mg) featuring a quality finish a comfortable grip covered in grid-pattern rubber as well as an optical viewfinder to aid composition particularly in brightly lit conditions. The built-in accessory shoe adds support for Nikon Speedlights and advanced i-TTL flash control.

In My Opinion..........2008-01-08
Good bits (in no particular order) :
Most DSLR features like, P/A/S/M, metering modes, sequence shooting, bracketing etc.
One command dial for shutter and aperture, jogging through menus, browsing photos.
Panorama assist even makes new folders on the sd card for each sequence.
Good macro.
Option to set focus to infinity for landscapes etc.
Plenty of preset scene modes.(actually seem sensible and I suppose they could save you time some day).
Fast start time.
OK sequence mode on 12mp..3 shots only and slow. A faster card may be better.Does 3 shots with flash too.
Fast on 5mp and will run all day.
Plenty more resolution options too.16:9, 1:1.
Good ISO options .64 to 400 is good to ok. Can be set to auto but within a preset range.
Manual white balance option.
Respectable video with sound.640 by 480...1gb = 15 mins.
........
Bad bits:
A good flash coupled with an inability to focus in poor light and a focus assist light that might as well be laser pointer if your within 10 feet.
High ISO is for mono only. Haven't tried the 3200 iso yet.
If you want to split hairs:
The extension lenses are about 80 quid each.
Looks stupid on the tripod. :)
Looks ridiculous with my big Speedlight on it. :)
Listing all the good features and nice touches would take all day. The low light focus issue is the only real serious let down.
A well priced 12mp compact that is the next best thing to a DSLR, with good looks and good ergonomics.
It will fit in your pocket but a slim case will tip the balance and make it a bit too big. It will happily hang around your neck under a t-shirt or jumper all day long.
I don't think it's really aimed at the happy snapping party animal but if that's you, this isn't the camera you're looking for.
My personal views and opinions. Thanks for reading.
excellent compact!.......2008-01-02
this is an excellent camera considering it's size. Although it isnt as good as the Canon G9 it is considerably smaller than the G9 and fits easier in your pocket.
The reason I am making this review is for Mr auckland who stated in his review that he has had noise problems with his aswell as problems with being sold a non UK model. If your still experiencing problems and are looking to take it back, you should be able to get a full refund from where you bought it despite what they said about the percentage deducted from the refund. If they still give you problems site the 1979 Sale of Goods Act which states that setraders must sell goods of satisfactory quality. If you discover what you bought doesnt conform to that you can take it back and ask for a FULL refund or a new camera. This is a little known act and more people should look into it as it's especially useful if the one year warranty on your camera has run out as if the camera breaks after that you can argue that a camera should have a longer lifespan than that and still get a replacement/money back. I did this a couple of years ago with a fuji bridge camera I bought that broke down a few days after the end of the warranty. The important thing though is that this only pertains to the trader/retailer who sold you the item and not the manufacturer.
Hope this helps you Mr Auckland!
Noise but not the sort I was expecting.......2007-12-28
I have just bought the 5100. Did all the research and then spent half an hour in the shop struggling between the canon and the NIKON. In the end the Nikon won, it just feels and looks good and as I already own a D70 soon to become a D300 I liked the similarities in Design and function layout. It's my take everywhere camera and I'm sure it will be great for the job. I only have a few niggles and one is certainly NOT the cameras fault. I bought it on Tottenam Court Road from N-Genius. Great salesman and a fairly good deal, although it's now much cheaper on Amazon. Anyway when I got home and went to register the purchase to take advantage of the NIKON extended warranty I was told by NIKON that the serial number was not a UK one and that the camera was a foreign import. I took it back to N-Genius and was directed to their N-Genius Service department in a side street down some stairs and obviously set up so that customers in the N-Genius shop don't get to hear what rorts are afoot. Of course no joy there. They could offer me a credit note, but no guarantee they could exchange for a UK model and if they could there would be an additional charge. They could give me a refund less 25% then 15% on my unused 12 day old camera or I could go on my merry way. So I've kept the camera and only have one complaint. It is noisy, very noisy, not picture noise, but noise you can actually hear. It makes a constant whirring sound when switched on and this sound makes it's way onto the audio track of any movies you shoot. Now I would not use it as a primary video device but the ability to shoot short clips when no vid camera is at hand is certainly a selling point. Also the constant noise is almost certainly some sort of motor whirring and therefore a constant drain on the battery. I will be amazed if this is the case with all P5100s and will have to go to another store to see before returning to N-Genius to do battle with their unhelpful staff. Try it before you buy it is my advice and see if others are makeing the noise or if I got a dud.
Amazing little camera.......2007-11-14
There's a huge amount of controversy flying about the net over this camera the main gist of which is why (oh why!) do manufacturers cram more and more pixels into tiny sensors producing very noisy (grainy) images. The P5100 has come in for it's fair share of kicking over this and, to be fair, it does become noisy around 400 ISO and very noisy at higher film speed equivalents but, cast your mind back to the days of film, when did you ever use 800 ISO film!? The main point for me is that at lower iso settings and in most of 'Auto' mode this camera takes absolutely stunning images with real sympathy to colour and tone - unlike the overproduced and lurid results in the Canon equivalents. it's also very easy to hold and navigate and can make you feel like you're a good photographer in minutes. The manual is on the cd of software supplied (Nikon's lip service to the enviroment) but if you contact nikon europe, they can send a hard copy manual. Don't be fooled by the raging comparisons with the Canon G9, this is a different camera, i think better designed. It is slower than the Canons and you might want to choose them if you photo kids and/or sport but, for beautiful imagery this one gets the cigar. 5 stars not because it's 'The Best' but because it does what it does beautifully.
35mm SLR user seeks superb digital point and shoot with near SLR flexibility.........2007-11-02
I have struggled with the digital approach for many reasons but am very content with this compact feature packed treasure.
It's not perfect, -slow to capture in-between shots with an average battery life, but other than that it is a 5 star performer and given that in general terms it is photographic ability that a digi camera should be merited, 5 stars is what I have given. Especially when you consider the ability to tack on other lenses and a good quality video capture -- frankly 98% photographers will be more than amply served by this units functionality and feature set.
The remaining 2% will have to be spending hundreds maybe thousands to better the performance of this neat little monkey and sporting handbags with hunchbacks...
For ref there are many sites that compare this camera to the Canon G9, some favourably, most not. I did a sig amount of research of others' opinions (no professional review as yet) and felt that on mass this camera was the overall best buy. Having taken the plunge I have no regrets, but will reiterate -do not buy this if you are a sports photographer as the time between shots would be prohibitive.

very poor quality & shocking after sales service !.......2007-06-16
I Bought this thinking it would be upto the standard of the old bulb AA type, and for a while it was great - until it began to flicker and switch itself off ! I sent it back to the repair center & it came bact a week later and all seemed ok, but a week after back to the flickering again so back it went to the repair center. This time it was gone for a month ! when it came back same again, worked for a week and i'm back to square one again with a flickering useless maglite.
Oh and dont think Maglite hq in the usa are any help either.
Take my advice & get something else instead.

Hate it with a passion.......2007-11-14
I've put up with this alarm clock radio for over a year and it's an absolute nightmare
Plus points, size & appearance.
The bad news, ridiculously bright backlight (you have to see it to believe it), the display points slightly upwards so you can only see it if you're looking down on it, the volume knob is at the side and is very easily turned down or off accidentally, the top buttons are small, fiddly, difficult to find your way around and you need to be pretty much wide awake to find the off button. But worst of all it's not very good at time keeping, a bit of a draw back for a clock, it gains about a minute a week which soon adds up and unless you keep resetting the time, which of course is a complete pain, you end up waking up to the farming programme.
Overall a very dissapointing effort from a respected name like Sony, I would not recommend this at all.
why oh why?.......2005-08-16
First impressions are that this is a great little alarm clock with lots of features - 20 radio pre-sets, 2 alarm types, snooze function, nap timer... however there are a few pitfalls.
Ever fancies a 45min nap in the afternoon? You can't have one as the nap function jumps from 30 to 60mins.. they really should have provided a function to set your own nap length.
Perhaps the most annoying feature on this alarm clock however is the backlight. If you're finding it hard to get to sleep at night, even on the lowest setting, the backlight shines brightly in a dark room.
If these problems don't bother you however, this is a fairly smart, compact alarm clock... just a couple of improvements however would make a world of difference.
Keep looking..........2005-04-10
My first impressions of this clock were good. It looks nice, and the features sound pretty good. But as soon as I got it home, I noticed the first problem - the display. Obviously the display is the most important feature for a clock...which is why I find it hard to accept that Sony designed a display that can only be seen when horizontal or higher. My bedside table is slighter higher (~4 inches) than my bed and I can't read the digits. Incredible. You can change the brightness, but this makes no difference.
It wasn't long before I got tired of the buzzer alarm. It's not as bad as some others, but it's still quite lethal. I started setting the radio to go off 10 minutes before I get up, then the buzzer alarm kicks in. This combo makes waking up painless, but the poor quality of the speaker is immediately obvious when listening to the radio. Also, the radio doesn't auto-tune and doesn't do anything fancy like show the station name.
The overall build quality is ok, and the footprint is acceptably small. The daylight savings button is in a seriously bad place though, it's easy to press it when grappling for the clock in the dark.
If you're considering this alarm clock, I'd keep looking if I were you.
Not as good as i thought.......2003-12-12
The clock radio is not as big as i thought, quite space-conscious, the sound effect is good. The LED part is carefully designed for conveniency, you can read the time clearly from the LED even if you place the radio on the floor. Snoozinazor is very useful.
But all the merits of this clock radio are cancelled by deadly pitfalls: the reception really let me down; there is no such weather alert mode or weather band which are highlighted as main features of this product says on the webpage; only 20 memory presets not 25 showed on the webpage; isolated summer-time-button on the side may be easy to use, but leads to miss-pressed sometimes, results in the time is an hour early or late which is very SCARY sometimes.
Overall, this producd is ok to buy but i beleive you can get better clock radio at the same price.
