Customer Reviews:
I didn't want to buy Sony, but..........2007-05-06
Well, I didn't want to buy another Sony Handycam, but there's very few alternatives to choose from. I made my choice at short notice and without doing any research in store - the worst possible place, but I've ended up with a great quality camcorder. It's simple to use and produces great quality images, but best of all it's not using a Sony propriety format, it uses the industry standard miniDV format.
I'm still getting to grips with all it has to offer, but so far have been more than impressed and with two children now I have twice the excuse to get the camcorder out! My main gripe would be that the supplied software isn't particularly impressive (mainly a browser) and so you'll need to invest in some software for your video editing needs - Sony Vegas seems quite good, but again it's early days for me.

Brill Camcorder but BEWARE.......2008-01-06
I Recived this Camcorder for xmas and it looked good and i was more or less pocketsize, but when i had charged it up.Xmas was ruined. I could not record because sony hadn't been boverd to put a tape in the box. But aprt from that it's a greate camcorder so i am still going to give it 5 stars
good value for money.......2008-01-05
i'm not going to say this camcorder doesn't have amazing quality or features because for this price you won't find a much better camera, and i agree with most the positive reviews, so im just going to point out the problems with it.
-the camcorder grip of the battery is flimsy and the battery taps the camcorder while recording if you move a lot or touch it with your fingers
-the battery is also neither the 14 or 6 hour one (whichare both v expensive), it only lasts about 90 mins.
-there is no cable to connect it to a computer, i was very annoyed with this because nobody uses vhs tapes anymore it should have been included, it was also a hassle trying to find the right one.
-i wasn't expecting tapes, but just to warn people, it doesn't come with any, so get some if you wanna record christmas or something.
-the tape mechanism is quite loud for a camcorder so if your filming very quite scenes it can be a problem.
but apart from that i recommend this camera. there are other things, like night mode is not excellent, but that's not really a problem because similiar cameras also have similiar night vision quality, if you want it better you need to buy a more expensive camera.
also i didn't really 'spend' money on the needed accessories because i saved more buying this camera online, so if you get them altogether you will save on p&p too.
PS i have only had this camera for a few days so i can't comment on durabiliy and there may be more faults but so far it's been good and i hope it doesn't break or anything.
Looks can be deceptive........2008-01-04
Bought this camcorder for my son, so imagine his dissapointment when the screen remained blank during playback. we have tried using other tapes and friends tapes but the problem remained. Amazon were excellent in their response and a new camcorder arrived days later. this worked for about two minutes before the screen also went blank. It seems to record fine as the tape counter does its job but on playback the screen stays blue and the counter does not move even though the tape is turning. Amazon have been proactive throughout but i'm afraid this item has lost a potential owner as we have now asked for a full refund and will not be buying sony camcorders again.
Fantastic Camera at a great price!.......2008-01-03
Firstly, the price: I got mine for £128 and its just gone in the sale at local Sony shop for £150, so Amazon is the place to buy!
Secondly, the features: This camera isn't loaded with feature its plain and simple, point and shoot. It has a fantastic 'Night-Shot Plus' mode which works fantastically!
Third, recording quality: Quality of the image is absolutely amazing and the 20X zoom is all you need and has perfect clarity. An old JVC DV camcorder I had (which actually broke after only 2 years!) was awful with tape noise and also zoom noise, but this is very minimal only a slight bit of tape noise can be heard when recordings are very quiet.
Fourth, the design: The fact that this has a touch screen (which is really easy to use and very clear) means that there are very few buttons on it making it look less vulgar than many other products and it is very small and compact and looks great!
Other reviews say that it doesn't come with enough accessories but this is supposed to be a bottom of the range stripped down model so you can't expect too much for what your paying, besides I got 5 tapes for a tenner at ASDA and Firewires are dirt cheap if you look in the right places.
So my advice, don't be expecting too much but get it if you don't wanna spend an arm and a leg.
This is what I got for Christmas and was absolutely overjoyed with it!
Ruined Christmas.......2008-01-03
I bought this item for my boyfriend for xmas so that we could record our son`s 2nd christmas, I charged it up previous to giving it to my boyfriend so that we were all ready for xmas morning..... What a disappointment !!!! No cassettes, couldn`t use it at all, ruined, you would think that Sony could afford to include a cassette to put you on, of course, everything was closed over xmas and the cassettes arrived today, 03/01/08, missed xmas and the New Year, not pleased with Sony at all. Spoilt our xmas and really has changed my view of Sony.

Not the Best...........2008-01-21
I bought these earphones as the ones I got with my MP3 player had broken. However I found this pair to have a tinny sound with barely audible bass, aswell as this they are really uncomfortable in my ears.
Altogether not a good buy... even if they were £4
An all round good product & great value.......2008-01-20
Brought this end of Dec - as needed longer lead (as ones supplied with mp4 player was quite short couldnt even put the player in my pocket thats how short it was)
Anyways reed a very reviews on this Sony Earphones and it all seemed good so brought 2 one for me and the brother! As it was £2.20 per sony earphones Bargain as in the high street stores for decent earphones.. cos arounf £10-15s and none the quality of this sony one!
However i did have some issue with deliver... it was rec'd 3 or 4 days after est. delivery date which was i wasnt too happy with as i was charged £4 x 2 for both sony earphones!
But the actually company - Deluxe Digital (as i brought it from one of the other stores on amazon) that i brought this from refunded me a hugh amount of the delivery charges and a percentage of the total value which i was pleasured with, soo businesses do listen to us little people! lol People power!
All in all cant fault the prodcut though and would recommend it withs fine!
Bargain.......2007-12-28
Durable and very comfy to wear. Very good sound quality for the price. I have sat on them, yanked them out my ears and crushed them in my bag and they still work fine. Owned my last pair of cheap Sony headphones that were basically the same as these for years and years no problems before I finally broke them having managed to cut the wire with scissors. I much prefer Sony headphones to any others.
Quality gear.......2007-11-14
My first set has lasted me 5 years or more and I have no heistation in buying exactly the same again. Quality sound, comfy in the ear and does what it says on the tin really.
The only downside for me was the foam covering didn't last as long as the headphone so I bought new foam about a year ago. To be honest at this low price it probably works out cheaper to buy a new set of headphones than replace the foam. Bargain really.
Excellent value and very solid product.......2007-10-19
These are the most comfortable in-ear headphones I've ever owned, they only cost a few quid and the sound quality is incredibly clear. There are only two faults here: firstly that on higher volumes these do suffer from some more leakage than you'd expect on average (though that is only if you really jam the sound up) and secondly that many report that after about six months they start to break down in one ear - doesn't matter though because these are such incredibly good value I will definitely just buy another pair once my current ones die on me.
Given that you can pick up a far inferior pair of headphones for twenty or thirty quid and these only come at just under four pounds (including p&p) there's not really a strong argument against buying these.
Close to the cheapest set on the market and easily one of the best.

'An expensive Toy'.......2007-10-22
Sorry, but this is an overpriced toy, yes its apparently feature rich, but far too complicated for the average jo and therefore pointless. And the controls are also too fiddly and complicated to access for an aspiring pro. Put it on easy mode and can't handle dark. The buttons are too small, and you will press the wrong ones on more than one occasion. I can't comment on the results yet, but I am sure others can tell you the quality levels, I haven't had a chance yet. I may try and take mine back I am that disappointed..
Superb.......2007-10-07
After my old JVC camcorder returned home faulty after my sister borrowed it I decided to treat myself to a shiny new HDV camera.
After spending several weeks reading reviews my short list came down to the HC7 and the canon HV20, and eventually decided on the Sony and have not been disappointed. Quite frankly the picture even on a normal def TV is stunning, lovely colours and a very sharp picture.
Its easy to use and I quite like the touch screen although it does get greasy quickly, I'd recommend the screen protectors you can find on ebay.
The manual focus dial is a bit fiddly, if only sony had included a focus ring the camera would be very near perfect, but that said if they did it would probably end up in the prosumer bracket.
The only drawback with Sony is they put their own hotshoe on the camera limiting it to the about 3 mics and a few camera lights, I've tried the mics and they are pants really. There is a solution though... you can buy an adaptor for the hotshoe which enables standard mics to be used, but at £20 for a lump of metal a bit pricey(search on ebay for one).
I really cant fault the camera though, excellent in low light too.
Oh... dont believe the rubbish about HDV tapes, just use the sony premium ones which are about £1/each.
Very pleased so far.......2007-09-22
Having owned a number of Sony camcorders over the last 20 years I have not been disappointed by the HDR-HC7.I selected an HDV model rather than an AVCHD as I believe that the footage is easier to edit and simpler to archive than its hard disk equivalent. It is also the medium currently chosen by professional industry.
I am used to using a number of manual controls when I need to, particularly exposure, white balance and focus and the manual overides provided on the HC7 have met all my needs so far. I have read quite a few reviews which critisize the touch screen menu's but I find them very easy to use and extremely flexible. Without this approach I think it would be hard to provide such a comprehensive and flexible interface to the camcorders facilities.
I have also found the manual control ring quite easy to use. I usually set it to exposure as the camcorder usually seems to focus quite accurately unless the lighting levels are very low or there is very little contrast. The Zebra facility is very useful as is AE shift. It is also useful to be able to manually set the recording sound levels instead of using AGC. The camera is easy and comfortable to use and the optical steady shot works much better than the electronic steady shot on some of my previous camcorders. The build quality is comparable to my other Sony camcorders which have all given me a sterling service over the years
Needless to say the picture and sound performance is excellent particularly in HDV. Battery life on the provided battery is quite good but I have also invested in an NP-FH100 for filming long events.
It would have been nice if the camcorder had a built in ND filter and had been provided with a seperate battery charging unit to allow batteries to be put on charge when the camera is being used. However these are very minor points. I would recommend it to anybody who is looking to capture high quality HD material without having to spend a couple of thousand pounds on a pro camcorder.
Do not hesitate!.......2007-06-28
Pros: Many but chiefly ease of use, physical design, image quality, range of functionality
Cons: x.v.colour make no difference to my eyes and I waited on a screen that supported it before buying!
This was a very good purchase. I had a Hi8 and a MiniDV Sony camcorder and went for this because of the 1080i/16:9/x.v.colour support. The camcorder is very simple to use and if you are really dumb there is a "simple" mode button to push on the side then it could not get easier! The aesthetic design is great although online photos do not do it justice. It is compact. But the main thing is the image and sound quality is very
high. I run it into my Samsung 40" (LE40R87BD same as LE40R86) which is full HD and the image is great. Images caught outdoors on a sunny day (plenty light) are outstanding.
There is no chance I'd consider going back to SD! The HDV files can be transferred off the tape the same way as DV, but using the free HDVsplit software as opposed to WinDV which I used for DV. Each tape takes around 13 gig of space - talking of which reviews advised getting the HD tapes rather than standard DV tapes as they claimed the latter could have frame drops.
I bought a pack of 5 off Amazon.com for 50USD.
Fantastic picture quality.......2007-05-23
This is a very good quality HD camcorder.
Easy to use, good IR night shot quality too.
If you have the money, and you want a top quality camcorder, then this is for you.
There are also accessories available, such as zoom lenses and filters.
I would recommend this camcorder to anyone.

Great for the money.......2008-01-03
I'm not going to bang on because Mr Haddrells review really is spot on.
Just a note about the speed (sorry, 'safety') camera download, it works quite well actually. As you approach the money-machines you get a verbal - "please watch your speed" (or words to that effect) - which works just fine.
It is worth mentioning that you get the speed camera free for 12 months, which isn't bad also. A quick glance over the Sony Nav-u website confirms that add-ons are somewhat cheaper than it's navigational rivals.
I have to say I haven't had any problems with the screen not responding to my taps, but I have read that it does occur in other reviews.
I'm not a fan of TomTom and I do think Garmin equipment is brilliant. But for £130 - this is an absolute STEAL. The screen is superb and the commands clear. The fact is gives you the actual road number is brilliant. The screen is so good in fact that you can see plenty around you, not just the road immediately ahead and to the side, this gives the Sony opportunity to display any POI that is near to you.
It gets 4 stars purely because of the fact that you do not get a case or indeed an AC adaptor with it. But, you can get these for peanuts if you shop about.
If you want a SatNav that does nothing more than be a SatNav, then you really cannot go far wrong with this little belter.
Try before you buy - flawed but still great !.......2007-12-29
I've been borrowing a TOM TOM Sat Nav for a while now and thought it was about time I got my own unit. My main reasons for picking up this Sony unit where that I needed a basic model (I don't need all the bells and whistle many other units come with), it was relatively cheap considering it's Sony, the wide screen looks (and is) very clear and I'm a Sony fan and have always found their equipment well made.
Firstly - you get everything you need in the box to get this up and running. The unit itself, the attachment unit (big sucker to you and me), a car charger and a USB cable. You can charge the unit from the car charger or via the USB cable (this takes slightly longer). However if you don't own a computer (how are you reading this?) it could prove a pain because there is no mains charger. Not sure what other Sat Nav's do on this front but I don't see it as an issue - you may.
The Good Things:
Works through my heated screen (I have a Ford and some web sites warned about the heated front screens causing problems). I've had no such issues.
The maps are beautifully drawn - crisp and very clear. This really is one of the key features that attracted me to the unit.
The attachment unit is great and much easier to dis/connect the unit than the TOM TOM.
I love the basic menu system - the TOM TOM had too many menus. The Sony has just the minimum you need. I also like the GPS status menu which tells you how many satellites you have picked up. It also has an excellent feature from this screen to save the current position.
Voice instructions are clear and loud, the instructions also include the main road you will be turning onto. For instance you're told to turn onto the A272, which is useful at roundabouts where you can double check with signposts. I've experienced in the past on large roundabout when you're told to take the 5th exit it's not always clear which one is the 5th exit. If you know which road your aiming for it's a lot easier. A great feature I hadn't even thought about until I realised it was there.
The unit itself is slim enough to drop into a jacket pocket. It's also well built. It even has four rubber feet on the back to stop it sliding about if you put it down anywhere.
All the basic Sat Nav features are here - time, estimated time of arrival, distance to next turn, current speed, Points Of Interest (POI). All clearly laid out. I worried from the demo pictures I'd seen that the POI display would take up a third of the screen, but you can easily switch this off and get the full map up.
The unit automatically adjusts the screen brightness for dark or light conditions.
The speed cameras are shown without any registration - you simply enable them from the POI menu. However no verbal warning is given when you approach or pass them, you simply have to look for them on the map. I wouldn't trust my license to this method. This might change when you register and download the speed camera update, but I don't know - see bad things below.
Free Sony Walkman MP3 player - great for free !
The Bad Things:
The unit does not respond to screen input consistently. You need to touch the same area of the screen several times before the unit actually does anything. This doesn't appear to be a fault because the unit actually beeps to let you know your touch has registered. It just seems the unit is off doing something else more important. Sometimes this is fine and each touch will work, other times you will need to hit the screen two or even three times to get it to register. This wouldn't drive me quite so nuts if it wasn't a Sony - these people must spend millions on product development. If it wasn't for this flaw I would recommend it without hesitation. I would suggest you get down to a local shop and try the unit out. You may be happy to live with this - but give it a try first.
The Sony Web site is not setup to support the NV-U53G. I've tried to download the Speed Camera Updates, but in order to do this you need to go through a registration process (no big shakes) but you also need to enter a product number. The web site gives you instruction on how to find this but the instructions are for another Sat Nav unit and the menu you need to go through is simply not present on the NV-U53G unit. I'm sure this gripe can easily be sorted.
As a result of this I can't comment on the software supplied with the unit, I haven't used it.
Manual supplied with the unit is poor. It's the size of a small novel but only because it covers every language on earth. The actual content in English is minimal and doesn't go into any detail.
No case supplied with the unit - you are going to want to protect the screen so this is another £20 you will need to spend.
Summary
All things considered I do still think this is a great unit, the screen input issue isn't a problem once you're on the move which is where this unit really does shine with the wide screen and perfectly drawn maps.
This would have made 5 stars if it wasn't for the flaw with the screen input.
