For several weeks I have been considering purchasing a satnav specifically for walking. I had been unable to find one in any store and so been unable to see exactly what I was buying. In desperation I settled for the Garmin Venture HC.
Using a map and compass is fine, and can never be totally replaced, but several times recently I have managed to get comprehensively lost. In theory with a couple of landmarks, a map and a compass it should be easy to work out where you are, in practice it is not so easy, landmarks can be hard to comeby or even not available (visible) at all.
The ability of the eTrex Veture HC to give a grid reference to 5 digit accuracy vertical and horizontal with WAAS correction (whatever that is) means that your map position can be fixed to within 10ft. That is quite enough to locate your position on any 1:25000 OS map.
The ability to track your exact location and to back track if necessary is more than useful. The built in odometer, compass and clock means that you can keep track of distance travelled and time spent with absolute accuracy.
As yet I have not invested in the detailed maps, but as OS maps are costing £7.99 a time (my current collection therefore valued at about £200) and are easily damaged by repeated folding and refolding I am coming to the conclusion that at £150 the full set of 1:25000 maps may well represent a good investment, and the waterproof versions cost almost twice as much.
Having done a couple of walks using the eTrex, firstly locally where I know exactly where I am, and then a walk round Macclesfield forest and up Shutlingsloe I have been very satisfied with my purchase.
Realising that the HCx model can take an external memory card and how much memory maps take I suspect that the additional cost of that model would easily be jusified. The HC has only 24Mb available. However the facilities it offers I think are well worth the cost and that is why a rate it at 4 Stars.

The eTrex Venture offers a worldwide database of cities and increased internal memory. It is alsoone of three eTrex units that are designed to provide precise GPS positioning using correction data obtained from the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS). This product will provide position accuracy to less than three meters when receiving WAAS corrections.The memory capacity of one megabyte allows the eTrex Venture to accept downloaded information from Garmin's new MapSource® Points of Interest CD-ROM. The CD enables users to download locations such as restaurants, hotels, shopping, and entertainment. Once the information is loaded into the unit, you can make a selection and telephone and address information for a particular point of interest will appear on the screen. The CD also includes marine data such as lights, buoys, wrecks and obstructions. The eTrex Venture comes housed in a stylish, translucent green case.

Great value product.......2005-02-16
Well worth paying the extra few pounds for the Garmin Venture compared to yellow model. You get 20 routes vs 1, a PC interface cable, a better user interface and easy to use joystick control on the front. The unit is very light, easy to use and has useful statistics and information for walking.
It's amazing to see such a small device gathering signals from up to 12 satellites then performing complicated calculations in just a few seconds. Great fun.
Cheap and effective handheld GPS.......2004-10-22
No memory for uploaded mapping, but then there are no useful Garmin maps for walkers in the UK anyway, and you can enter your own saved tracks for a simple map of footpaths or whatever.
Unit performs well, except under tree cover when is fails to maintain a lock on satellites. Good introduction to GPS usage .. if you hate it you won't have lost much money, if you love it you can then blow £400+ on a top of the range model.
Serial interface to PC for saving tracks and waypoints (or loading prepared routes from the PC). Lucky memory is limited, because serial is pretty slow!
This product is the best & cheapest.......2004-01-25
Function of this product is the best & very user friendly. With all this function same type of GPS system cost around £300. I am gone buy it. Because I have used it in one of my friend's car. I was almost blind when I am driving with that system. Because it was telling me everything I don't even have to look at the signs of the road. To be honest with all of you this is the best system in cheapest package.
