Marvellous unit.You dont need fancy 500,700 and 900 varieties.Buy 2GB SD card and copy whole of Europe map.Can be updated from internet.Serving me very well on my domicillary visits and while holidaying in Europe.Using it since 2004.Now it is better value with low price.You will not regret it.

I purchased a Tom Tom GO 510 in April this year. It was really easy to set up and get going. However, after about a week it failed such that although the screen was lit, there was absolutely nothing on it - a bit like the old 'blue screen of death' from Microsoft, but a lighter colour. That fault arose after I connected it to Tom Tom Home via my PC. The Tom Tom support guy suggested that I connected it to the PC and re-installed the software - impossible of course since the unit was unusable! It was replaced and the new unit worked fine for about five weeks, now it is just dead, and cannot be reset. It is going back to Tom Tom who will, at their leisure, replace or repair it. The engineer I spoke to did say that they seem to develop faults if they are connected to computers, although they are specifically designed to do that to get updates etc. Would I buy one again? Probably not - I can accept one unit being faulty as just bad luck, but not two out of two (and counting)

I bought this unit, primarily for my wife little over two years ago. My better half has absolutely no sense of direction & is fearful of any electronic device, with the exception of kitchen 'white goods'! On demand working can entail her driving long distances to anywhere in the UK & the Tom Tom has proved invaluable & has quelled all her fears. The colour display is excellent & the volume & quality of the spoken instructions (which it repeats twice in case you were day dreaming!)are excellent. My wife & me, find the full Post Code search the most valuable attribute.Is it perfect? No! I know of no sat nav unit that is infallible. In literally hundreds of journeys it has only led us slightly astray on three occasions & even then we were within 200yds of our destination, common sense does come into the equation. Occasionally, when on a new road the Tom Tom will show your vehicle travelling across a field but also showing the old road, usually in parallel. Minus points, the unit only comes with a car charging adapter - no mains adapter, but that's cheap enough to buy separately. Tom Tom support are a complete waste of space & are not worth the cost of a phone call or the effort of an email! Would I buy the same unit again - YES!

The tomtom 300 works great until it fails. It has problems with the power supply and the SD card interface. When the FAT on the SD card has problems the unit freezes. The unit writes the POI data for every new navigation adrress. The maps are old and out of date. Roads that were built in the last 3 years are not in the database.

Well worth it!.......2006-12-04

I have owned the TomTom 300 for almost a year now and I still love it!! I live in a fairly quite, countryside hamlet and have no real need to travel outside a 5 mile radius, so when it came to driving to the other side of Britain, I was understandably worried. Unknown roads and strange markings make me anxious, City roundabouts have me in a flap because I'm so busy trying to watch all the people around me to know which exit I should be taking. So I got the TomTom...

It warns you in advance about what your next turn is, it tells you how far you are from your next instruction and also your ETA at your destination. It has given me so much more confidence on the road, I've driven places I used to only get to by train before!!

To those who complain about errors, about Sat Nav systems tellings them to go through places they shouldn't (some well documented incidents were through a river...and up a cart-track on the side of a small 'mountain') use some common sense!! It is a GUIDE, not something to be followed blindly!! If you're daft enough to do exactly what a computer says the entire time, then it's not a Sat nav you need, it's a taxi.
Personally, I have had a few errors, it will suddenly display that I'm driving cross country because a road has been built or changed and on one occasion it lead me through a newly built housing estate and was adamant I should be driving into someones garden. Just go back the way you came, carry on in the direction before the instructions seemed to be a bit wrong and let it calculate a new route!

To the reviewer who complained about the errors looking for safety cameras, I didn't even know this model has that function and to be honest, if you don't break the law by speeding, you don't need it!!

Definitely a good buy!!

Luv the GO300.......2006-04-24

Just gave the TomTom GO 300 to my wife who is extremely directionally challanged. She is also a technophobe so I wasn't sure what her reaction would be. But she was extermely delighted with this new gift. We took it out for a "test ride" this weekend and it worked beautifully. I guess she would have liked the new GO 910 because it actually says the name of the street to turn on to while ours just says turn (left, right, etc.) in XXX amount of yards and then at about 30-40 yrds it says turn (left, right etc) but dosen't actually say the name of the street, but if you glace over at the screen (which was very easy to see, although it was on a rainy day) it dispalys the name of the street to turn onto. I particullay like the fact that it will automatically recalculate your route based on where you are to where you are trying to get to with out any indication from you. I purposely tried to get lost but the system would just recalculate the directions (in a matter of seconds) and display new directions. At one point it even said "When conditions permit, please turn around" which my wife particullry liked because it won't "Freak her out" when she is driving and gets lost. She also likes the "Navigate to home" option that she just has to tap and the system calculates her directions back to our house from where ever we are. Over all I am very impressed with this system. Now if it allows my wife to get to (and from) all of our sons soccer games (when I am unable to attend) she will be truely delighted and I will be even more impressed (if possible) and less stressed thinking she is lost somewhere unable to figure out how to get home.
